Plan at a glance

Location, entrance and opening scope

Fotang Ancient Town is at 139 Jianshe Middle Road in Fotang Town, Yiwu, Jinhua, Zhejiang. The usual main entrance is the Fotang Old Street archway. The public streets are generally open throughout the day, while indoor sites such as Wu Residence, Liugeng Hall and Peide Hall, as well as shops, have their own hours and charges. One universal schedule does not cover every space.

The public area is free to enter, while some indoor buildings may charge separately. Allow 2–3 hours for a walk through the streets, or 3–4 hours if you want more buildings and the waterfront area. Night lighting, shop hours and the condition of the floating bridge can change with weather and on-site management.

Who it suits

Fotang suits visitors interested in old towns, local history, arcade buildings and night photography, as well as families looking for a light neighbourhood walk. The old streets have cobbles and stone paving, and the riverbank and bridge require attention to footing. Visitors with limited mobility should choose a shorter route.

Fotang is in Yiwu. It is not a walkable extension of Lanxi or central Jinhua. If you are coming from another city or attraction, calculate the road journey, parking and return separately.

Choose your visit

Fotang Old Street and the arcade district

Fotang Old Street retains a Ming- and Qing-period street layout, arcades and front-shop/back-workshop buildings. The main street is long, so observe the façades, lanes and relationship with the river at your own pace. Commercial offerings change, and shopping and food do not need to be the focus of the visit.

Wanshan Floating Bridge crosses the Yiwu River and connects the old town with the riverside area. Whether the bridge is open, which direction it can be crossed and whether it is lit at night depend on the day’s on-site information. Putuan Water Street suits an evening walk, but the water and stone paving become more slippery in rain.

Indoor buildings and the waterfront route

To see more specific historic buildings, choose open indoor sites such as Xinhua Theatre or Wu Residence during the old-street route. Each venue has its own ticket and opening arrangements. Check the notice at the entrance instead of assuming that free access to the street includes every indoor hall.

Photographers can treat the old-street archway, Wanshan Floating Bridge, Putuan Water Street and the riverbank as separate sections. Residents and shops still use the town, so keep entrances, bridges and narrow lanes clear while taking photographs.

Build your day

A 2–3 hour old-street route

Enter through the Fotang Old Street archway, walk along the old street to Wanshan Floating Bridge, cross to Wanshan Pavilion and return along Putuan Water Street. The route is mainly through public areas and suits first-time visitors or anyone who needs to continue to Yiwu Station later that day.

The floating bridge’s status may change the crossing route, so read the on-site directions before setting out. If the bridge is closed or crowded, remain on the old street and the water street on your side of the river and return along the original route.

A 3–4 hour building-and-water-street route

Add one or two open indoor buildings to the old street, floating bridge and Putuan Water Street route, then return to the riverbank for the late-afternoon view. Indoor sites may not form a continuous route, so confirm the next venue’s opening time and charge before entering.

Arriving later in the afternoon lets you combine daytime and night views, but shops, lights and the floating bridge may not remain open every day. If your return time is fixed, complete the indoor buildings first and treat the water street and old street as the parts that can be shortened.

Parking and leaving during holidays

Traffic around the town can be congested on weekends and holidays. Park in a managed area outside the core and walk in. The farther the parking area is from the archway, the longer the walk back, so note the vehicle position and return direction at the start.

If you plan to stay for the night views, confirm the ride-hailing pick-up point and any road controls in advance. When crowds gather, do not wait for a car on the floating bridge, by the river or in a narrow lane.

Get there

From Yiwu Station

From Yiwu Station, take Bus 810 and then transfer to Bus 318. Get off at Xinshi Ji Station and walk into the old town. The bus transfer takes time, and you should check the last service for the return as well. With children or older adults, choose a connection that gives you more control over the timing if possible.

After arrival, enter in the direction of the Fotang Old Street archway. The entrance to the public streets and the entrances to indoor sites are different, so decide where you want your walk to begin before buying an indoor-site ticket.

Driving and parking

Navigate to a parking area around Fotang Ancient Town. During holidays, follow traffic controls and park in an allowed outer area before walking in. Vehicles are not a practical way to connect the individual points inside the old town.

Before leaving, confirm the parking-area exit and the direction of the return. If you are going back to Yiwu city centre or Yiwu Station, leave extra time for holiday congestion and the walk back to the vehicle.

Know before you go

Streets, indoor halls and shop hours

The public streets can generally be walked freely, but Wu Residence, Liugeng Hall, Peide Hall, Xinhua Theatre and other indoor spaces may charge separately or follow their own hours. Shop hours also vary with weekdays, holidays and individual businesses. Do not use the all-day access of the old-town streets to plan every indoor venue.

Before entering an indoor building, confirm its price, entrance and opening status. If it is closed that day, continue along the old street and water street instead of changing the whole route for one venue.

Floating bridge, stone streets and weather

Access, lighting and management of Wanshan Floating Bridge can be affected by weather, water level and crowd control. Follow the on-site directions before crossing. Cobblestones, stone paving and river edges may be slippery, so wear flat shoes with good grip and keep away from unprotected river edges.

Watch the steps, bridge and vehicles when taking photographs in rain or at night. The commercial street may have repetitive products and temporary sales pitches; compare prices and contents before buying and decline services you do not need.

Supplies and the return

Food and rest options change with shop hours. Carry water and plan time to sit down during a longer visit. Families with children should agree on a meeting point and avoid separating in the busy old street or at either end of the floating bridge.

Fotang Ancient Town has no walking or unified transport connection with Hengdian or Lanxi. Re-plan the road, parking and opening hours before continuing to the next stop, and confirm the return vehicle before leaving the water street.
