Plan at a glance
The right navigation target and free entry
Donglin Grand Buddha is beside National Highway 105 in Wenquan Town, Lushan City. Navigate to “Donglin Grand Buddha” or “Donglin Temple Jingtuyuan (东林寺净土苑)”; do not use “Donglin Temple” (东林寺祖庭, the ancestral monastery) as a substitute. Entry is free and no reservation is required, but the site has its own gate, opening days and temple-visit rules. The “Huilai Ba, Haizi” (回来吧孩子, “Come Back, Child”) plaque is visible at the entrance.
Opening days and walking load
The site is open Tuesday to Sunday from 08:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30. It is usually closed on Mondays, but may open on special dates such as the first or fifteenth day of the lunar month, Buddhist festivals or public holidays. Reaching the Buddha platform from the gate involves 949 steps; allow about 1–1.5 hours for a short visit or 2–3 hours for a fuller one.

The Buddha, central axis and underground palace
The main structure is the 48-metre Amitabha Buddha, with an overall height of 81 metres. Climb the central axis to the Buddha platform. The underground palace and indoor 3D Buddha display beneath the lotus seat are indoor stops for visitors interested in Buddhist architecture, Pure Land culture or a quiet setting.
Xixin Chi (洗心池) and views along the route
Xixin Chi (洗心池) on the left side of the gate is the first stop before the central axis. From the steps and the halfway viewpoints, look back at the Buddha, pines and sky. The lotus seat suits an upward-looking photo, while the entrance plaque and Buddha platform offer different views of the entrance and main building.
Who it suits
The site suits visitors looking for a quiet temple visit, an introduction to Buddhist culture or a free cultural stop, as well as families willing to walk at a slower pace. There are 949 steps from the gate to the Buddha platform, so older adults, young children and visitors with sensitive knees need to plan around that walking load.
Build your day
A 1–1.5-hour direct route
Enter through the gate and visit Xixin Chi (洗心池) on the left before following the central path up all 949 steps to the Buddha platform. Walk clockwise around the Buddha three times, visit the underground palace and return by the same route; the visit takes about 1–1.5 hours.
A 2–3-hour full route
Follow the direct route to the Buddha platform, then pause at the tea points and upper level. You can also look for the free books or Buddhist cards available on the day. On the way down, use the corridor-and-pavilion path on the left before returning to the gate; the full route takes about 2–3 hours.
Visit order and return
Keep Xixin Chi (洗心池), steps, Buddha platform and underground palace within the same uphill-and-downhill route, then return to the entrance by the original path or the corridor-and-pavilion path. If you want a meal, arrange vegetarian food or a restaurant below the mountain before or after the descent. Donglin Temple (东林寺祖庭, the ancestral monastery), Xiufeng and White Deer Grotto Academy require separate drives.
Get there
By bus from Jiujiang
From the Coach Terminal beside Jiujiang Railway Station, take the “Donglin Grand Buddha” special bus. The trip takes about one hour. Use “Donglin Grand Buddha” or “Donglin Temple Jingtuyuan (东林寺净土苑)” for both navigation and the drop-off target, so you are not taken to Donglin Temple (东林寺祖庭, the ancestral monastery).
Driving and parking
Navigate to “Donglin Grand Buddha Parking Area”; parking costs about CNY 15 per day. When the main car park is crowded in peak periods, try the more distant “Donglin Grand Buddha P5 Parking Area” and walk about 300 metres to the entrance. P5 is an alternative target; space and the walking arrangement depend on the day’s visitor numbers.
Know before you go
Dress and temple rules
Dress modestly for the visit. Shorts, short skirts and slippers are not suitable inside the temple, and meat products may not be brought into the temple. For donations or alms requests, use only clearly official channels inside the site; do not pay people at the roadside or unofficial personnel.
Steps and supplies on site
The 949 steps are the main physical demand, so wear shoes suitable for continuous uphill and downhill walking. Free tea or freshly ground coffee may be available along the route, and free books or Buddhist cards may be offered at the upper level; these are day-of-visit arrangements. Vegetarian meal coupons are often distributed before 11:00 in the morning, subject to the number available and your arrival time.
Food below the mountain
After the visit, look for Zhouji Na Shou Cai, Lao Nanchang rice noodles with clay-pot soup or Yixiangnan Restaurant below the mountain; Jianshan tea is another drink option. These meat dishes and flavour notes apply to restaurants outside the site. Arrange the meal outside, and still observe the rule against bringing meat into the entrance.
