Location and the two ways to enter
Most mountain activities on Lushan are centred around Guling Town and its surrounding areas. The usual planning choices are the North Gate and the West Gate: the North Gate is close to Jiujiang Station and suits visitors taking the sightseeing bus uphill, while the West Gate connects to Guling Town by cableway. The cableway, the Lushan entrance pass and the mountain sightseeing-bus pass are separate charges.
Tickets and how much time to allow
The Lushan CNY 160 core scenic-area pass is valid for seven days from the first validation and, under the applicable rules, covers the core scenic area as well as surrounding areas such as Three Cascades Waterfall, Xiufeng and White Deer Grotto Academy. Book it with real-name verification through the “一机游庐山” mini program. Discounts for students, older visitors and other groups follow the ticket policy and document checks in effect that year; teachers receive free admission only on specified dates or during temporary campaigns. The mountain sightseeing-bus pass costs about CNY 70 and is valid for seven days, but it does not include transport up or down through the North or South Gate. If you take a sightseeing bus up or down through either gate, you can buy a pass of about CNY 90 that includes those uphill and downhill rides.
Lushan works well as a two- or three-day trip; with only half a day, choose the western highlights. The CNY 160 core scenic-area pass also covers Three Cascades Waterfall, Xiufeng and White Deer Grotto Academy. These places still have their own entrances and opening hours, while the cableway and sightseeing buses are charged separately. Donglin Grand Buddha is free to visit and follows its own opening rules.

Forest and valley scenery on the western route
The western route brings together Flower Path, Ruqin Lake, Jinxiu Valley, Tianqiao and Immortal Cave. It suits a first visit focused on forests, water, valleys and rock walls. Jinxiu Valley’s unusual rocks and mist, the changing views around Tianqiao and the more enclosed finish at Immortal Cave are the main highlights.
Sunrise, waterfalls and Guling Town on the eastern route
On the eastern route, choose among Hanpokou, the Three Cascades direction and Guling Town. Hanpokou is suited to sunrise and sea-of-cloud views in the early morning, while Three Cascades works best as the main destination for the day. Guling Town is the mountain base for accommodation and transfers, with a central park and viewpoints for evening views; eastern stops can be spread across different days.
Choosing a travel pace
Lushan works for visitors seeking scenery, a cooler climate or modern Chinese history. Splitting the western and eastern routes across different days makes practical use of the pass’s seven-day validity. A tightly packed itinerary still has to account for winding roads, transfers and sightseeing-bus hours, and mountain accommodation can be noticeably more expensive on peak-season weekends.

Half-day western route
Take the sightseeing bus from Guling Town to Flower Path Station. After getting off, see Ruqin Lake and Flower Path Park first, then enter Jinxiu Valley, pass Tianqiao and finish at Immortal Cave. The route takes about half a day; return to Guling Town by sightseeing bus. It works well on the day you arrive or when you have only a short window.
A two-day framework for a first visit
On Day 1, follow the half-day western route and use the remaining time for accommodation, food and evening views in Guling Town. On Day 2, go from Guling Town to Hanpokou; start early if you want sunrise, then continue in the direction of Three Cascades. For Three Cascades, choose either the mountain round trip or the East Gate route; the entrance, number of steps and return arrangement change with that choice.
Where to finish and how to return
The eastern route can finish with an exit through the East Gate, or you can return to Guling Town for another night. Put the sightseeing-bus operating hours into the route before choosing. If you only want the western route, schedule the long-step sections at Three Cascades or Wulao Peak for another day and divide Lushan by area.
Get there
From Jiujiang Station to the North Gate
After arriving at Jiujiang Station, take a taxi to the North Gate Visitor Centre and transfer to the sightseeing bus uphill. The ride takes about 50 minutes and costs about CNY 10 per trip. The mountain road has many bends, so visitors prone to motion sickness should prepare medication in advance; the cableway through the West Gate is another way to reduce the mountain-road ride.
The West Gate, Guling Town and mountain transport
The West Gate cableway’s lower station is at the foot of the mountain. After reaching Guling Town, continue by mountain sightseeing bus or on foot. Taxis on the mountain generally do not use meters and commonly charge about CNY 45 per person; the actual fare and transfer arrangements depend on the day. The sightseeing-bus pass and cableway ticket are separate.
Know before you go
Transport, weather and walking load
The mountain roads have many sharp bends and can cause motion sickness. On rainy days or after rain, wear shoes with good grip for areas with many steps, such as Three Cascades; secure footing matters more than rushing for photos. Sightseeing buses may stop earlier in the afternoon, so eastern routes need a clear return buffer. Hanpokou’s viewing platform can also become crowded at popular times.
Accommodation, food and expectations
Guling Town’s commercial street covers most dining and rest needs, but prices are usually higher than below the mountain. Look for local specialities such as Lushan Shiji (庐山石鸡), a local frog dish, and Shi'er (石耳), an edible rock lichen. Peak-season weekend accommodation is expensive, so coordinate a Guling stay with the next day’s eastern-route departure time; some stops, including Datianchi, may look different from what their names suggest, so keep them within the wider area itinerary rather than letting one stop take over the day.
Plan surrounding attractions separately
Three Cascades Waterfall, Xiufeng and White Deer Grotto Academy fall within the applicable scope of the Lushan CNY 160 core scenic-area pass, but each has its own entrance and opening hours. Visitors without the pass buy Xiufeng’s separate ticket; cableway and sightseeing-bus rides are additional. Donglin Grand Buddha is free and follows its own opening rules. These places work better as separate stops in a foothill or cross-area itinerary; do not fold Donglin Grand Buddha into the two- or three-day mountain route.
