Location and separate entrance
White Deer Grotto Academy lies at the southern foot of Wulao Peak in Lushan City. Navigate to “White Deer Grotto Academy Visitor Centre” or “White Deer Grotto Academy Ticket Office”. After reaching the ticket office, buy a ticket or validate your Lushan pass, then take the free shuttle to the academy entrance; the ticket office and gate are about 2 kilometres apart.
Tickets and opening periods
The separate academy ticket costs about CNY 40–52. Visitors who already hold the CNY 160 Lushan pass can enter with that pass, but still follow the academy’s ticket-office, shuttle and entrance procedure. From April 1 to October 31, opening hours are 07:30–18:00; from November 1 to March 31, they are 08:00–17:00. Visitors without the Lushan pass can buy the separate ticket on site and do not need a special reservation.

Courtyards and lecture spaces
Lingxing Gate, Zhuangyuan Bridge, Lisheng Hall and Minglun Hall form the academy’s main courtyards. Lisheng Hall is the place to look at the Confucian ritual space, while Minglun Hall helps explain the academy’s teaching tradition and its connection with Zhu Xi. White Deer Cave is the place that gave the academy its name, and the banks of Guandao Stream have the Zhenliu (枕流) and Shushi (漱石) cliff inscriptions.
Stream, old trees and quiet places to pause
Dangui Ting (丹桂亭), Dudui Ting (独对亭) and the corridor beside Yilun Hall suit a longer route, with views of the stream, old trees and courtyards together. Visitors interested in historic buildings, classical culture, family learning or a quiet walk can make the academy a half-day cultural stop rather than a mountain-peak hike.
Choosing a way to visit
Visitors drawn to historic architecture and academy history can read the displays in courtyard order. Families with children or limited time can prioritise Lisheng Hall, Minglun Hall, White Deer Cave and the streamside inscriptions. The main interest here is the buildings, teaching spaces and inscriptions, with walking inside the academy rather than the elevation gain of Wulao Peak.
Build your day
A 1–1.5-hour short route
Take the free shuttle from the ticket office to the academy gate. Follow Lingxing Gate, Zhuangyuan Bridge, Lisheng Hall and Minglun Hall, then walk along Guandao Stream to see the cliff inscriptions and finish at White Deer Cave. Return to the shuttle boarding point by the same route; the short visit takes about 1–1.5 hours.
A 2–3-hour highlights route
Follow the same order at a slower pace, adding time at Dangui Ting (丹桂亭), Dudui Ting (独对亭) and the corridor beside Yilun Hall before returning to Guandao Stream and White Deer Cave. The visit takes about 2–3 hours; take the free shuttle back to the ticket office rather than walking out along the 2-kilometre road.
Using the audio guide
Scan the QR code at the guide desk for the free mobile audio guide and listen as you walk through the courtyards. If your group mainly wants the buildings and stream, focus the audio on Lisheng Hall, Minglun Hall and the cliff inscriptions; use the QR guide without rearranging the route to look for a separate device.
Get there
By bus from Jiujiang
From Jiujiang Coach Terminal, take a minibus towards Lushan’s urban area; some older routes or local speech may still use the name “Xingzi”. The fare is about CNY 13, and you can get off near White Deer Grotto Academy. In peak periods, a direct tourist service from Jiujiang Station may run for about CNY 10. Whichever way you arrive, set the navigation target to the visitor centre or ticket office rather than the academy gate.
Shuttle and nearby travel
The ticket office and academy entrance are about 2 kilometres apart. After entry, take the free shuttle for this section and begin walking from the academy gate. Food and farm restaurants around the academy are limited, so finish with a meal in Lushan’s urban area or Jiujiang. Xiufeng and Donglin Grand Buddha require separate drives and follow their own entrance and opening rules. Xiufeng has its own ticketing, while Donglin Grand Buddha is free to enter.
Know before you go
Read the ticket and hours separately
The Lushan pass can be used to enter the academy under the applicable rules, but you still follow the on-site ticket-office, shuttle and academy opening arrangements. The separate ticket costs about CNY 40–52. Seasonal hours differ, so use the date of your visit to choose the right time window.
Streamside safety and food
Snakes have been reported in dense vegetation beside the stream. When travelling with children, stay on the path to view the water and inscriptions and do not enter deep vegetation. Farm restaurants around the site are limited; put a full meal in Lushan’s urban area or Jiujiang and rely on whatever supplies are available on site during the longer route.
The scope of a combined trip
Xiufeng and Donglin Grand Buddha require separate drives from White Deer Grotto Academy and follow their own entrance and opening rules. Xiufeng has its own ticketing, while Donglin Grand Buddha is free to enter. Donglin Temple (东林寺祖庭, the ancestral monastery) and Xilin Temple are different temple areas; navigate to “Donglin Grand Buddha” or “Donglin Temple Jingtuyuan (东林寺净土苑)” for the Buddha site. Keep the academy visit focused on its courtyards and streamside inscriptions, and plan Wulao Peak or the main Lushan eastern route separately.
