Location and access boundaries
Zhenbao Island is on the Ussuri River in Zhenbao Island Township, Hulin. It lies in a border-controlled area, and your visit is limited to the Zhenbao Island Park, pier, or public viewpoint that is open that day. Reaching the pier does not give permission to land on the island; island access depends on same-day border approval.
Zhenbao Island Park is free to enter. Boat trips are extra. Whether boats operate, which waters they can enter, and whether they can stop depend on water level, weather, and border management, so confirm the day's arrangements before travelling.
How much time to allow
A short stop in the permitted land area takes about 30 minutes, mainly for the “Zhenbao Island” carved stone and a river view from an approved public viewpoint. If a boat is operating and boarding is confirmed, a combined park-and-boat visit takes about one hour, with waiting time set by the operator.
When boats are not running, the visit consists of the stone and public viewpoints and takes about 30 minutes. It is most practical as a short stop when you are already near Hulin or Hutou; confirm boat operation before making a dedicated trip.

Choose your visit
The carved stone and river view
The “Zhenbao Island” carved stone is the clearest land-based stop in the park and can be photographed when the area is open. The river view and the places where you may pause depend on the day's permitted visitor zone.
Zhenbao Island is associated with the 1969 border conflict. Visitors interested in modern history and the history of China's border regions can make the stone and the river landscape the main focus of the visit.
A boat trip when permitted
If the pier is open and the operator confirms boarding, follow the approved route to view the island shoreline and river from the water. The boat is an extra-cost activity; its price, sailing area, and any landing depend on the day's permission.
When boats are not running, use the land route to visit the carved stone and open public viewpoints. Follow the permitted road and do not look for another way around a restricted area.
Build your day
About 30 minutes: land-only stop
After reaching the permitted Zhenbao Island Park, stop at the carved stone first, then follow the signs to a river view from an approved public viewpoint before leaving through the open exit. The land stop takes about 30 minutes.
If the park or viewpoint closes temporarily, leave as directed and do not search the rural road for another entrance. Confirm the vehicle pickup point before you begin the stop.
About one hour: a boat route when confirmed
Only when the pier is open and the operator confirms that boats are running, see the park stone first, then follow the ticket and boarding instructions for the approved route and return to the pier afterwards. The one-hour estimate includes the short park stop and water view; waiting and weather can extend it.
A boat ticket does not include permission to land on the island. Unless separate access is granted that day, remain on the boat. If sailing has not been confirmed, use the land-only route; choose a different date if the boat experience is essential.
Get there
From Hulin via Hutou
Coaches from Hulin Coach Station to Hutou take about one hour and cost around RMB 12. From Hutou, arrange a separate hired vehicle to the Zhenbao Island area. The drive from Hutou is about 70 km, so contact a driver in advance; the total price depends on the date, vehicle, and waiting time for the return, and should be agreed before departure.
From central Jixi, travel first to Hulin or Hutou and then change vehicles. Check the Hulin–Hutou departure times and last service for your travel date, and arrange the return at the same time.
Driving and road conditions
The drive from Hutou is about 70 km, with the final 19 km on a rural road that may have potholes. Slow down and follow the day's road conditions. Navigate only to the park or pier that is open to visitors; do not drive into a border-controlled or closed section.
Food and restroom facilities nearby are basic. Arrange water and a meal in Hulin or Hutou before leaving. Parking and the return pickup point depend on the open visitor area and your agreement with the driver.
Know before you go
Water levels, tickets, and cancellations
The park or pier may close in summer when the river rises. Before travelling, confirm that the park is open, boats are running, and the current boat price. Boat tickets are sold separately and the operator sets the day's price.
The park and boat trip follow separate entry instructions. Reservation and document requirements follow the day's management rules. If boats are closed, the land viewpoint is the full available visit, so decide whether it is worthwhile for the road journey.
Border and driving safety
Zhenbao Island lies in a border-controlled area, and some sections are subject to border-security or military restrictions. Stay in approved public areas. Do not cross barriers, enter restricted border zones, approach sentry posts, photograph sensitive facilities, or fly a drone. Landing on the island requires explicit permission that day, and a boat ticket is not a landing permit.
The final 19 km from Hutou is a rural road, and water levels or rain can affect the journey. Follow road controls after rain or changes in water conditions, and arrange the return vehicle or coach before you set out.
