How to Visit

Make the boat journey the centre of the day
Bingling Temple is usually reached by water from Liujiaxia Reservoir. Confirm the departure pier, round-trip sailing and return-meeting rules before relying on a grotto ticket.
Tip:Sailings can change because of strong wind, rain, water conditions or safety controls. Do not treat the final return boat as a safe plan.

Take an early boat and protect your return buffer
Confirm the boat operator's meeting time on arrival. Allow at least 1-1.5 hours for the regular caves, and longer if you plan to visit special caves.
Tip:Do not schedule an evening train, flight or long-distance transfer immediately after the planned boat return.

Clarify the difference between regular and special caves
Regular admission is CNY 50. Some special caves require separate tickets; availability, accessible caves and charges follow the arrangements on the day.
Tip:Do not assume that a regular ticket includes special caves such as Cave 169, or sacrifice the regular route solely for a special-cave plan.

Choose your cave depth by fitness
With limited time, focus on the regular caves, the Tang-dynasty Giant Buddha and the main cliff face. Add the uphill special-cave route only if access is available and your fitness allows.
Tip:Special-cave routes may include steep ladders, narrow passages and exposed walkways. They are unsuitable for visitors with a fear of heights, knee problems or unsteady footing.

Treat conservation rules as part of the route
Do not touch statues, murals or historic structures; do not use flash photography; and do not hold up narrow passages for photos.
Tip:The cliff area is exposed with limited shade. Water, sun protection and grippy shoes matter more than trying to cover every cave.
Highlights
- The boat journey through Liujiaxia Reservoir and its gorges is an essential part of understanding the grottoes' setting.
- The Tang-dynasty Maitreya in Cave 171, about 27 metres high, is the clearest visual landmark on the cliff.
- Cave 169 preserves a Western Qin inscription dated to the first year of Jianhong, an important early chronological record in Chinese grotto art.
- The regular route brings together statues and murals from the Northern Wei, Sui and Tang periods along one cliff face.
- The grottoes, reservoir and red cliffs make it possible to combine a heritage visit with a gorge journey in one day.
Insider Tips
✦Peak-season hours are 08:30-18:00; low-season hours are 09:00-17:00. For visitors arriving by water, the actual boat-return arrangement takes priority.
✦Regular admission is CNY 50. Chinese guiding for up to five people costs CNY 50 per visit; an audio guide costs CNY 20 per unit.
✦Do not add special caves on impulse: they require extra time, money and energy during the tightest part of a boat-based visit.
✦Afternoon light can make mural details harder to see. Choose an earlier arrival where possible.
✦Wind, heavy rain or water-safety restrictions can interrupt sailings and extend the return. Follow crew and site staff at the pier, on the boat and along the cliff route.
