Location, ticket and opening hours
Huaguo Mountain Scenic Area (花果山景区) is at No. 5 Yulin Road in Lianyungang. The main entrance is the Shanmen (山门). An adult ticket costs CNY 90 from March to November and CNY 50 from December to February. Full-time students up to undergraduate level and visitors aged 60–69 can receive half-price admission with the required ID. Children aged 6 or under, children 1.4 metres or shorter, visitors aged 70 or above and other eligible visitors can enter free under the scenic area's policy. The listed opening hours are 07:00–18:00 from March to November and 08:00–17:00 from December to February.
How much time to allow
Allow about 3–4 hours for the main route linking Jade Maiden Peak (Yunü Feng, 玉女峰), Water Curtain Cave (Shuilian Dong, 水帘洞) and Sanyuan Palace (三元宫). If you want to hike uphill and cover more of the mountain, allow 5–6 hours. There are many steps, and even visitors who take a shuttle uphill still have a long walk on the descent.

Jade Maiden Peak, Sanyuan Palace and the monkeys
Jade Maiden Peak is 624.4 metres above sea level and is the highest peak in Jiangsu. On a clear day, you can look across Lianyungang from the top. Sanyuan Palace is an important stop on the downhill route. Wild macaques are often seen between Jade Emperor Pavilion (玉皇阁) and Water Curtain Cave. Do not feed or tease them, and keep all food, drinks and loose bags inside your backpack.
Water Curtain Cave and the Journey to the West experience
Water Curtain Cave is one of the main stops on a Huaguo Mountain visit. The scenic area requires a second QR-code reservation after you enter, and you must arrive during your reserved time slot. Inside, “The Origin of the Great Sage: Cave Heaven Secret Realm” is presented as an immersive light-and-shadow experience. Water Curtain Cave works best as part of the Huaguo Mountain route rather than as a separate stop in your travel plan.
Who this suits
Huaguo Mountain suits first-time visitors who want to combine Journey to the West culture, mountain scenery and Water Curtain Cave in one day. Families should plan for steps, monkeys and a tiring descent. If someone in your group cannot manage a long climb, use the shuttle-up route and keep the walking plan focused on the main stops.
Build your day
A 3–4 hour quick route
Enter at the Shanmen and take the sightseeing shuttle to Jade Maiden Peak. Walk downhill through Jade Emperor Pavilion, Water Curtain Cave and Sanyuan Palace, then take the shuttle back to the Shanmen. Water Curtain Cave requires a second reservation, so confirm your time slot after entering before fixing the downhill order.
A 5–6 hour route for stronger walkers
From the Shanmen, hike through the Eighteen Bends (十八盘), South Heaven Gate (南天门) and Jiulong Bridge (九龙桥) to Sanyuan Palace. Continue to Water Curtain Cave, Jade Emperor Pavilion and Jade Maiden Peak, then take the shuttle downhill. This route has much more climbing and is for visitors who want the hike itself to be part of the experience.
Choosing between the shuttle and walking
The shuttle from the Shanmen to Jade Maiden Peak costs about CNY 25 one way or CNY 50 return. Walking uphill takes about 2.5 hours and involves many steps. For most visitors, saving energy for the peak and downhill sights is practical, but the descent still requires supportive sports shoes.
Get there
Bus and driving
From central Lianyungang, take bus B11, You 1 or You 2 to the Huaguo Mountain entrance. The ride takes about 40 minutes and costs about CNY 2–3. Drivers can navigate to “Huaguo Mountain Visitor Centre”; parking is listed at about CNY 15–20 per day.
Entrance and movement inside the area
The main route starts at the Shanmen and the key stops are spread along the mountain road. Leave your car near the visitor centre or the entrance, then transfer to the scenic shuttle according to the day's arrangement. Use the marked walking paths for the descent rather than the vehicle road, which can add unnecessary distance.
Know before you go
Reservation, queues and timing
Huaguo Mountain uses a real-name reservation arrangement, and Water Curtain Cave requires an additional QR-code reservation after entry. The shuttle and Water Curtain Cave can both develop long queues during holidays, so an early start is useful. If you arrive close to closing time, do not attempt the full mountain route.
Monkeys and walking equipment
Macaques may grab exposed food and drinks. Keep your backpack zipped and do not carry snacks in an open hand. The downhill trail has many steps and can be slippery after rain, so sports shoes are safer than sandals.
Food near the entrance
Restaurants near the scenic area include Yucun Diyi Xian (Huaguo Mountain branch), which focuses on seafood and is listed at about CNY 75 per person, and Zhang San Meishi near Xinhua Yuan Market, a local-style casual eatery. There are no major nearby attractions that fit naturally into the same route, so separate the mountain day from the rest of your coastal itinerary.
