Plan at a glance
Sunrise entry and normal visiting hours
Jiuqu Yunhuan is the core viewing area of Yunhe Rice Terraces, on a mountainside around 600–800 metres high. Drive to Jiuqu Yunhuan Parking or the visitor centre and enter through the visitor centre or ticket gate; sunrise admission commonly starts around 04:30–05:00, while normal hours are about 08:00–17:00.
The early start is mainly for sunrise and cloud sea, not for completing every photo stop. The Sunrise Cloud Sea Viewpoint is the priority for terrace curves; visitors with young children or limited walking energy can stay around the viewpoint and wooden boardwalk.
A simpler way to plan tickets
If the same day also includes Qixingdun and Baiyin Valley, the CNY 80 Yunhe Rice Terraces three-area pass with a two-day validity is the clearest base plan. You may also see adult tickets around CNY 70–80 or a two-day ticket-and-cable-car package around CNY 195; confirm which areas and whether the Qixingdun cable car are included before paying.
For a second sunrise on another day, confirm that the ticket in hand is valid for two days. Some concession cards are valid only that day, so use the validity printed on the purchase record when deciding whether a late-afternoon entry can be followed by next-morning sunrise entry.

The wide viewpoint or a closer terrace walk
The Sunrise Cloud Sea Viewpoint is the main angle for terrace curves, dawn and changing clouds, while the boardwalk below shows the fields and valley from several levels. Do not leave immediately when the early cloud layer is thin: cloud can build gradually after sunrise.
The farming trail gets closer to field ridges and has straw installations, a swing and the China National Geographic photo frame. It suits visitors who want more walking and a closer look at the terraces; after rain, keep young children on the viewpoint and boardwalk because narrower field-side sections can be slippery.
Choose the season and the pace
The flooded-terrace period in May and June is useful for water reflections, while September and October bring golden rice. Sunrise is usually around 05:00–06:30, although light, cloud sea and visibility still depend on that day’s weather.
Photographers can keep the blue-hour period around sunrise for the main viewpoint, then add boardwalk and field details. Families and short-visit travellers do not need every smaller path: a section of boardwalk and the core viewpoint are enough before returning the same way.
Build your day
A 1–1.5 hour short visit
From the ticket gate, walk about 10–15 minutes on the wooden boardwalk to the main viewpoint. Return by the main road after the terrace view; if energy and conditions allow, take a short field-edge walk, but stay behind barriers and out of restricted terrace sections.
This option suits visitors continuing to Qixingdun or Baiyin Valley that day. After sunrise, check the reserved cable car, scenic bus or driving-transfer time before adding the farming trail, so the next leg does not become a rush.
A fuller 2–3 hour route
With more time, go to the Sunrise Cloud Sea Viewpoint first, then follow the boardwalk down to the farming trail, passing straw installations and the field swing before leaving by the exit. Descend slowly enough to see terrace details and leave time to return to the car park or cable-car station.
To continue to Qixingdun, change to the cable car from Jiuqu Yunhuan; the three areas are too far apart to link on foot. If cloud, rain or energy are poor, finish Jiuqu Yunhuan on its own and use the pass validity for the other areas at another time.
Get there
Driving and parking
The D and E parking areas are near Jiuqu Yunhuan Parking and the visitor centre. The mountain road has many bends, so travellers prone to motion sickness should prepare in advance; for sunrise, allow time to park, walk to the viewpoint and find a position before the light changes.
Roadside stopping is not a reliable parking plan. Holiday traffic can be heavy, so note the parking zone after leaving the car; it makes later transfers to other areas less likely to turn into another search on mountain roads.
Public transport and scenic connections
From the coach centre beside Lishui Station, take a bus to Yunhe Rice Terraces Visitor Centre, then change to a scenic bus or cable car. There is no metro, and mountain services are not suited to last-minute chasing, so non-drivers should arrange the return bus or vehicle before going up.
Scenic Bus Line 1 links the visitor centre and Jiuqu Yunhuan. Continue to Qixingdun by cable car, or use Scenic Bus Line 2 towards Kenggen Stone Village or Baiyin Valley; use the day’s final services rather than map distance to estimate every connection.
Know before you go
Weather, footwear and photo positions
Mountain showers are common, and dawn is cooler than the daytime. Bring rain protection, a warm layer, shoes with grip, insect repellent and sun protection; when low cloud, strong wind or wet boardwalks affect conditions, stay on the viewpoint and safe boardwalks and follow staff guidance.
Holiday sunrise crowds build early, so arrive before the main photography window if the best angle matters. Do not park at the roadside, obstruct traffic or cross barriers into the terraces; when the cloud is disappointing, changing angle or waiting a little longer is safer than entering the fields.
Accommodation, food and linking the other areas
On holidays, arrange a nearby or mountain stay in advance if sunrise is the priority, rather than driving a long mountain road before dawn. There are simple snacks in the scenic area; for a full meal, it is usually easier to use Yunhe County after transport has been settled.
Jiuqu Yunhuan can form one day with Qixingdun and Baiyin Valley, or it can simply be a sunrise stop. When the pass has a two-day validity, dividing the visit is often more comfortable than repeated vehicle changes in one day.
