Plan at a glance

What the high point is good for

Qixingdun is on the southwest side of Yunhe Rice Terraces, close to Baiyin Valley and Kenggen Stone Village. At about 1,000 metres, its platform looks across terraces, bamboo-covered hills and distant ridges; visitors short of time can complete a circuit of the platform path in about 30 minutes.

It suits drivers, photographers and visitors who have already seen Jiuqu Yunhuan. Anyone waiting for sunset or cloud sea should place the descent and return transport ahead of the photography plan, because the summit is not a good place to start looking for a ride at the last minute.

Passes, cable cars and opening periods

For Jiuqu Yunhuan, Qixingdun and Kenggen Stone Village together, allow for the CNY 80 adult three-area pass, valid for 48 hours. Other adult ticket types around CNY 70–80 and cable-car products also appear in the material, so confirm admission, cable-car use and the planned areas separately before paying rather than assuming transport is included.

Peak-season hours from June to September are about 08:00–17:00, while October to May is about 08:30–16:30. Cable cars and scenic buses have separate final services, so confirm that the intended return route is still available before going up late in the afternoon.

Choose your visit

The platform view and a short stop

The platform circuit gives a broad view of the terraces, bamboo sea and mountain ridges in a short time. Coffee and a swing nearby are convenient rest and photo stops; for older relatives or children, the platform path is much easier than continuing down the old trail.

Weather changes quickly, and cloud sea can still build later in the morning even if the early cloud layer is thin. Leave a clear buffer for the cable car, scenic bus or drive down while waiting, rather than treating every extra minute as photography time.

The old trail, Yuwang Temple direction and photo choices

The old trail from Qixingdun to Kenggen Stone Village is about 2.7 kilometres and takes at least an hour, mostly downhill, which can be hard on knees. It works for visitors who want to connect the summit with the old village; if knees are sore or weather worsens, return by cable car or vehicle instead.

The view near the parking outside the gate in the Yuwang Temple direction is different from the main platform and can work for sunset over the valley. Confirm parking, cable-car return or scenic-bus arrangements first, and do not make a dark mountain road the basis of the return plan.

Build your day

A 30-minute panoramic stop

After arriving by car or cable car, follow the platform path, choose an open angle across the terraces and bamboo hills, then make a short stop near the coffee or swing. If time is short, leave by the same route instead of stretching the visit towards the final transport service for more angles.

On holidays, follow the on-site parking guidance around Qixingdun Parking. Summit spaces fill up, so parking first and then beginning the visit is more efficient than circling mountain roads for the closest space.

Up from Jiuqu Yunhuan, down to Kenggen Stone Village

Stronger walkers can take the cable car from Jiuqu Yunhuan to Qixingdun, visit the viewpoint, then descend the old trail to Kenggen Stone Village and leave by scenic bus, taxi or an arranged vehicle. This combines the high terrace view with the village, but the downhill is sustained, so footwear with grip and knee condition matter.

Visitors who do not want the old trail can return to their original transport point by cable car or car. Use scenic buses as the lower-area connection between Jiuqu Yunhuan and Kenggen Stone Village, not as a substitute for walking directly from the visitor centre to Qixingdun.

Get there

Driving and coming up from the visitor centre

Drivers can navigate directly to Qixingdun Viewpoint, taking extra care on sharp mountain bends, especially in rain or late in the day. Parking and toilets are available around Qixingdun Parking and the nearby circular timber building; use the on-site space guidance in high season.

Non-drivers can reach Yunhe Rice Terraces Visitor Centre first, then take the cable car via Jiuqu Yunhuan. The upper station is called Baiyin Valley (Qixingdun); buses run from the coach centre beside Lishui Station to the visitor centre, but daily services are limited, so plan both ascent and return together.

The boundaries of bus, cable car and walking routes

Scenic Bus Line 1 connects the visitor centre and Jiuqu Yunhuan, while Line 2 links Jiuqu Yunhuan and Kenggen Stone Village, with limited frequency. The cable car is the direct way from Jiuqu Yunhuan to Qixingdun; there is no direct walking path from the lower visitor centre to the viewpoint.

The old trail down to Kenggen Stone Village is a proper downhill hike, not ordinary scenic-area transport. Taxis to the summit may add a charge, so agree the fare, waiting arrangement and return point before leaving the lower area.

Know before you go

Mountain weather and the descent window

Mountain weather changes quickly, so bring rain protection, a warm layer and shoes with grip. While waiting for cloud sea or sunset, keep the cable-car, scenic-bus and safe descent times in view; if conditions are poor, leave early instead of saving the final mountain-road section for low visibility or darkness.

The old trail is a sustained downhill that loads the knees, and wet stone steps are more slippery after rain. The platform path is enough for a panoramic stop; hikers should carry water and check both their condition and return transport before starting the descent.

Food, costs and the day’s route

Food on the summit is limited and can cost more than below the mountain, so carry water and a simple snack. Coffee and breakfast stalls suit a short pause rather than the only meal of the day; a proper meal is easier to time in Yunhe County or before going uphill.

Treat cable-car, scenic-bus and ticket costs separately, especially when the day includes Jiuqu Yunhuan, Qixingdun and Kenggen Stone Village. Choose the route first and then buy the transport it needs, which avoids reaching the summit with a return arrangement that does not fit.
