Plan at a glance

Location, entrance and opening hours

Huang Zunxian Former Residence is at 2 Dongshan Avenue in Hakka Park, Meijiang District, Meizhou. The usual entrance is the memorial hall gate, next to China Hakka Museum and within walking distance. Admission is free; visitors can scan and register on site or reserve through the WeChat account in advance.

The site generally opens Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:30 and closes on Mondays, with possible holiday changes. Renjinglu, Ronglu Di and Enyuan Di together form the Huang Zunxian memorial site; they are three connected parts of one visit rather than three separate city attractions.

Suggested time and visit scope

Allow 1–1.5 hours for Renjinglu, Ronglu Di and Enyuan Di. With China Hakka Museum, Dongshan Academy and Jiangbei Old Street, allow around 3.5–4 hours. The residence is moderate in size, with the focus on buildings, the historical figure and intangible-heritage displays rather than a large museum collection.

The former residence is next to China Hakka Museum but is a separate institution. Confirm the entrance and opening time for each place when planning a Meijiang culture route; do not treat them as different galleries of one museum.

Choose your visit

Renjinglu garden and study

Renjinglu was designed and used by Huang Zunxian as a study and garden. Its layout combines corridors, towers, rockeries and ponds with Chinese, Japanese and Western influences rather than following a purely traditional Hakka courtyard form. Walk slowly enough to understand how the rooms and paths connect.

The garden is better appreciated through its courtyards and details than through a quick photograph at the entrance. Paths may be slippery after rain, so use open walkways and marked positions when taking photos.

Ronglu Di and Enyuan Di

Ronglu Di is a traditional Hakka residence with a three-hall, two-wing and nine-courtyard layout. Its central hall carries the “Zaiqin Hall” plaque written by Liang Qichao. Enyuan Di is connected to the residence and is now used to display Meizhou intangible cultural heritage.

The three parts have different emphases: Renjinglu is the study and garden, Ronglu Di the traditional residence, and Enyuan Di the heritage exhibition. Visiting them in that order gives the stop more structure than taking photographs in one courtyard and leaving.

Who it suits

The site suits visitors interested in modern figures, diplomacy, local culture and traditional buildings, as well as architectural photographers and family study trips. Its proximity to China Hakka Museum and Dongshan Academy makes it useful on a central Meizhou walking route.

Photographers can look for light in the corridors, courtyards, brickwork and gardens, but should not enter private or closed rooms for a better angle.

Build your day

A 1–1.5-hour study and residence route

Enter through the memorial gate, visit Renjinglu first, then Ronglu Di, and finish with the intangible-heritage displays in Enyuan Di. The three buildings are within walking distance, and the sequence moves from study and garden to traditional home and local heritage.

If you arrive in the afternoon, confirm the closing time of each indoor space first. If one area is temporarily closed, visit the other open sections rather than leaving all three buildings until the end of the day.

A 3.5–4-hour Meijiang culture route

Visit China Hakka Museum in the morning or around midday, walk to Huang Zunxian Former Residence, continue to Dongshan Academy, and finish with food in Jiangbei Old Street. Although the museum, residence and academy are close, each has its own entrance and hours; handle any reserved or time-limited stop first.

If someone in the group does not want two consecutive indoor visits, put the old-street walk and meal after the former residence as a rest period. Hakka noodles, Sanjidi soup and other Hakka dishes can be planned around Jiangbei Old Street; restaurant hours should be checked on the day.

A full-day Meijiang culture route

Complete China Hakka Museum, Huang Zunxian Former Residence and Dongshan Academy in the morning, eat in the city, then visit Meizhou Thousand Buddha Pagoda in the afternoon and return to Jiaying Ancient City or Jiangbei Old Street in the evening. Pagoda climbing and museum closing times differ, so confirm the day's order before leaving.

Get there

City buses, high-speed rail and local travel

A taxi from Meizhou West Railway Station takes around 20–30 minutes. From the city, take bus 1, 2, 6 or 12 to Hakka Park Station; shared electric bicycles are also convenient. At Hakka Park, search for the memorial gate or China Hakka Museum entrance rather than searching only for the former residence and then circling the park.

The former residence and China Hakka Museum are walkable from each other, as are Dongshan Academy and parts of Jiangbei Old Street. Moving a car repeatedly is inefficient in a holiday crowd; parking outside the busiest area and walking is usually easier.

Know before you go

Closure, registration and guided information

Monday closure is the main day to avoid; holiday changes should be checked on site. Free admission may still involve a QR scan or registration, so prepare your phone and allow time at the entrance.

The site may provide a QR audio guide, and visitors can listen to a live group if they do not interfere with it. Do not wait for a guide at the expense of the museum or old-street itinerary.

Parking, photography and refreshments

Parking around Hakka Park can be tight on public holidays. The museum car park and the temporary area under Dongshan Bridge have their own signs for availability and charges; walking around five minutes from an authorised space is usually better than circling the entrance.

Renjinglu, Ronglu Di and Enyuan Di include historic and sometimes residential spaces. Follow photography restrictions and stay out of private or closed areas. Refreshments inside are limited, so pair the visit with Jiangbei Old Street, the pagoda or another city stop.
