Plan at a glance
Location, entrance and access conditions
Qiu Fengjia Former Residence is in Fengjia Village, Wenfu Town, Jiaoling County, Meizhou. The usual entrance is Peiyuantang at the front gate. Admission is free and advance reservation is usually unnecessary. The site generally opens from 08:30 to 17:30; it may close on Mondays for maintenance, except some holidays, so daytime visits are safer.
There is a free car park next to the residence, but the village has limited commercial services. The former residence works well as a 1–1.5-hour rural heritage stop, or as part of a self-drive route with Changtan Reservoir, Baima Village or Jiaoling County.
Suggested time and visit expectations
Allow 1–1.5 hours for Peiyuantang, the central plaque, the two side rooms and the rear courtyard. With Qiu Fengjia School, Changtan Reservoir and Mixiang Centre, allow 4–5 hours. A two-day plan can place the former residence and Changtan on day one, then use day two for the county centre or nearby exhibition sites.
This is a rural historic home with a focused subject, not a large general museum. A slow architectural route is more useful than extending the visit by repeatedly photographing the same courtyard.

Peiyuantang and the Hakka round-house layout
Peiyuantang dates from 1896 and uses a two-hall, four-wing and enclosed Hakka layout, with around 55 rooms. The Crescent Pond in front and the enclosed area behind the house help explain the organisation of the courtyard and the relationship between study, family and daily life.
Start with the overall plan and then look at the plaques, windows and hall details. The building is more than a photograph backdrop; its value is in the way the rooms and courtyards fit together.
Plaques, windows and Qiu Fengjia's objects
The central hall displays the “Jinshi” plaque awarded during the Guangxu period. The Nantai Study and Lingyun Hainilou in the two side rooms retain historical inscriptions and local literary associations. The window forms are often linked with “Tai” and “He” shapes and can be understood through the site's explanations.
The residence also displays manuscripts, photographs and historical objects connected with Qiu Fengjia, while the rear courtyard has lychee trees traditionally associated with him. Follow the open display route and do not touch or move any object.
Who it suits
The site suits visitors interested in Hakka buildings, modern local history, education and rural heritage, as well as family study trips and self-drive visitors. It is far from Meizhou city, so it is not efficient as a stand-alone trip for someone who only wants a single urban historic building.
Build your day
A 1–1.5-hour residence route
Start at the Peiyuantang gate, continue to the central hall and “Jinshi” plaque, then visit the Nantai Study, Lingyun Hainilou and the rear lychee trees where access is open. This order shows the building structure first, then the person's history and objects.
Village roads and courtyards may be uneven. If an indoor section is under maintenance or closed, use the open courtyard and village route instead of entering a restricted space.
A 4–5-hour residence and Changtan route
Allow around 1.5 hours for Qiu Fengjia Former Residence, then continue to Qiu Fengjia School, drive to Changtan Reservoir for a boat or lakeside walk, and finish at Baima Village Mixiang Centre. The sites require driving, so confirm parking and return time rather than treating the route as one walk.
If boats are not operating at Changtan, use the lakeside walk as the alternative and adjust the Mixiang Centre visit. Do not wait for a boat so long that the former residence closes or the return becomes a night drive.
A two-day Jiaoling heritage route
On day one, visit Qiu Fengjia Former Residence and Changtan Reservoir and stay near Baima Village. On day two, choose the Qiu Chengtong International Conference Centre, Zhenshan Park or another Jiaoling stop before returning. Rural accommodation and food are limited, so confirm them in advance rather than assuming the residence area has city-style services.
Get there
Driving and public transport
Driving to “Qiu Fengjia Former Residence” is the most reliable option. The journey takes around 3–4 hours from the Pearl River Delta and about one hour from Meizhou city, and a free car park is available next to the residence. From Meizhou West Railway Station or Jiaoling County, take a bus to Wenfu Town and then transfer locally or walk, but services are limited and are not suitable as an unplanned return strategy.
The site is in a village, and some roads become narrow after leaving the expressway. Slow down for passing traffic. Non-drivers should arrange a return vehicle before arriving rather than searching for a long-distance taxi in the village.
Know before you go
Closure, maintenance and visitor conduct
Monday maintenance may affect access, and indoor displays may follow a different schedule from the village exterior. Confirm whether the main rooms are open before travelling. On arrival, follow staff directions and do not enter maintenance or closed areas.
The residence is an important historic building and a patriotic education site. Keep quiet, do not touch objects and follow photography rules. If villagers are present, avoid noise, crowding or entering private courtyards.
Supplies, roads and nearby meals
There is no large commercial area near the residence, so carry water. Plan a proper meal in Wenfu Town, Changtan Town or Jiaoling County. Roads and courtyards may include steps, stones and uneven surfaces; comfortable shoes are more useful than heavy camera equipment.
Changtan Reservoir, the Qiu Chengtong International Conference Centre and Mixiang Centre have separate tickets, boat services and operating conditions. Confirm each stop independently rather than assuming free entry to the former residence means the surrounding attractions are also free or open all day.
