Plan at a glance
District, entrances and opening conditions
Songkou Ancient Town is in Songkou Town, Meixian District, near the meeting of the Meijiang and Songyuan rivers. Common starting points are China Immigrant Memorial Square and the ground-level car park on the west side of the old town. The street area is free and open all day, but indoor sites such as the former Songjiang Hotel usually operate around 09:00–17:00.
Residents still live in the town, and the main area follows the river and arcade streets. It is not a large commercial old-town complex. Shops are more likely to be open in daylight, while arriving late may mean closed shops, limited lighting or no admission to indoor venues.
Suggested time and visit expectations
Allow 2–3 hours for the immigrant square, ferry pier, former Songjiang Hotel, arcade streets and Meidong Bridge. With Yuankui Pagoda, Zhongshan Park and a fuller heritage walk, allow 3–4 hours. Songkou works best as a slow street and riverside visit rather than a destination measured by the number of attractions.
From Meizhou city, arrive during the day or early afternoon and leave time for the drive back. Songkou can be combined with Yannanfei Tea Plantation or Qiaoxi Ancient Village, but too many distant stops on the same day will make the route rushed.

Ferry pier and China Immigrant Memorial Square
The ferry pier and immigrant square introduce Songkou's links with overseas migration and the historic route downriver and overseas. They are useful places to read the information and observe the river rather than simply taking a quick photograph and leaving.
River light and water levels change with weather and season. Take care near the water's edge, and treat the memorial facilities respectfully: do not climb or touch the sculptures.
Former Songjiang Hotel and arcade streets
The former Songjiang Hotel is a five-storey arcade building with Chinese and Western features. Its open areas may now house an overseas-Chinese history exhibition, but access to upper levels and other interiors depends on the day. Prosperity Road, Shide New Street and nearby lanes retain stretches of Nanyang-style arcades, old shopfronts and weathered brickwork.
Further into the old lanes, you may see buildings that are unused or in poor condition. Do not enter closed buildings for a photograph, and do not gather for long outside residents' homes.
Yuankui Pagoda, Meidong Bridge and who it suits
Yuankui Pagoda and Meidong Bridge add a higher viewpoint and river views to the old-town walk. They suit visitors interested in local history, overseas-Chinese architecture and riverside photography. Whether the pagoda is open for climbing must be confirmed on site; do not assume that it is always accessible.
Songkou suits heritage photographers, old-town walkers, family study trips and slow weekends. Visitors looking for dense commercial streets, extensive indoor museums or a lively night programme should keep expectations modest and focus on the lanes, pier, buildings and river.
Build your day
A 2–3-hour riverside walk
Start at China Immigrant Memorial Square, continue to the ferry pier, then visit the former Songjiang Hotel and the arcade streets before finishing around Meidong Bridge. This order introduces the town's migration history before the building details and river views.
If you want to enter an indoor venue, confirm the former Songjiang Hotel's hours before planning the rest of the walk. The old-town core is compact, but stone paving and uneven surfaces mean you should watch the ground rather than looking only through a camera.
A 3–4-hour overseas-Chinese heritage route
Start at the ferry pier, visit the history display in the former Songjiang Hotel if open, follow the arcade streets to look for old businesses and architectural details, then decide whether Yuankui Pagoda is open before resting at Zhongshan Park. Around 16:00 the light is often better for arcades and river views, but indoor closing time comes first.
Many shops close from around 17:00, so arrive during the day. Fish rice noodles, fried meatballs, qilu biscuits, Hakka noodles and fried rice cakes are options; choose according to the day's opening shops and menus.
A two-day Hakka route
Visit Songkou on day one, eat in Meizhou city and stay overnight. On day two, continue to Yannanfei Tea Plantation, Qiaoxi Ancient Village or Ye Jianying Memorial Park before returning. These locations require driving, so confirm parking and the return vehicle in advance.
Get there
Driving, high-speed rail and town transport
Driving to “Songkou Ancient Town” is convenient. The trip takes around 3–4 hours from the Pearl River Delta and about one hour from Meizhou city. The town has free parking, but spaces are limited during holidays. A taxi from Meizhou West Railway Station takes around 40 minutes; buses also serve Songkou Central Primary School Station or Datang Street Station, followed by a walk.
Bus services in Songkou are infrequent. Non-drivers should arrange a return vehicle or charter in advance, and drivers should use the west-side car park or another marked area rather than driving into the narrow arcade lanes.
Know before you go
Shops, indoor sites and the size of the town
The street area is open all day, but shops and indoor venues are not. Arrive in daylight and leave the 09:00–17:00 window for the former Songjiang Hotel and other indoor points; after dark, stay in familiar riverside areas and do not expect every shop to remain open.
The main sights are concentrated along the riverside. Further inside, you may encounter old or unused buildings. Do not treat unsafe structures as exploration sites, and never cross barriers or enter a building without an open-access sign.
Parking, paving and food
The entrance area can be congested on holidays and parking is limited. If the main car park is full, follow traffic directions and use an explicitly permitted outer parking space before walking in; do not stop at residents' entrances or in narrow lanes.
There are many stone-paved sections, and the riverside and arcades can be sunny. Wear comfortable flat shoes and bring sun protection. Food options are limited, so plan a meal in town or along the return route rather than assuming late-night shops will be open.
