Plan at a glance

Two nearby stops in the city center

The May 6 Fire Memorial Hall is at No. 25 Zhonghua Road. Songyuan is across the street, at the intersection of Zhonghua Road and Yuanlin Road. Visit them as one walking outing; starting at the memorial hall and continuing to the park works well.

Check each place's hours separately

The memorial hall is free and does not require a reservation. Bring valid identification; visitors from overseas should carry a passport and ask the hall about its registration requirements. From Tuesday to Sunday, hours are 8:30–11:30 a.m. and 2:00–5:30 p.m.; it is closed on Mondays. Songyuan is also free. Its hours are 8:30–11:30 a.m. and 2:00–5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and it may be closed on Mondays. Check each place before you go.

How long to allow

Following the memorial hall's one-way visitor route takes about 20 to 60 minutes. A walk around Songyuan takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Allow one to two hours for both, including the safe crossing between them and a rest stop. Leave enough time at the memorial hall if you want to see the full exhibition and the surround-screen presentation.

The fire and reconstruction exhibits

The memorial hall tells the story of the forest fire on May 6, 1987, the rescue effort and the rebuilding of the city. The current memorial hall, opened in 2006, covers about 2,420 square meters and has 12 exhibition halls and a surround-screen theater. Photographs, artifacts, sculptures and reconstructed scenes show how the disaster unfolded. The focus is on understanding this part of the city's history.

Featured exhibits

The calendar marked “May 6, 1987” and galleries titled “Fire Engulfs the City” and “The Decisive Battle in the Greater Khingan Range” help visitors follow the timeline, the impact of the fire and the rescue effort. The displays include difficult scenes and are suited to visitors interested in Mohe's history. This is not an entertainment or photo-op attraction.

Songyuan's urban forest

Songyuan is about five hectares of Mongolian pine forest in the city center, with woodland paths and a stone inscription of Songyuan Fu. After the exhibition, take a quiet walk and see how this patch of forest fits into the urban landscape.

Build your day

Start at the memorial hall

Enter through the main door and follow the one-way route through the hall. Begin with the background, then visit the sections on the fire, rescue and reconstruction. Finish with the surround-screen presentation if it is available. A standard visit takes about 30 to 60 minutes. If you arrive close to 5:00 p.m., check first whether entry is still allowed; the presentation's availability and schedule depend on the day's program.

Cross the street to Songyuan

Leave the hall and use the crosswalk to reach Songyuan opposite. Enter through the main west gate, look for the “Songyuan” entrance stone, then follow the woodland paths to the Songyuan Fu inscription. The park is small; allow about 30 to 60 minutes to walk around. Return to the city streets by the same route.

Take a break

Mohe Library is opposite the memorial hall, and its ground floor has a café. Check whether it is open that day. You can find a full meal on foot in the city center.

Get there

Walk or take a short taxi ride

Both places are in central Xilinji Town and are easy to reach on foot or by a short taxi ride. For navigation, use “No. 25 Zhonghua Road” or “Greater Khingan Range May 6 Fire Memorial Hall” for the memorial hall. Enter Songyuan at the junction of Zhonghua Road and Yuanlin Road. Use a crosswalk between the two stops.

Parking

Parking around the memorial hall and Songyuan is limited, so walking or taking a taxi is more convenient. If you drive into the city center, use a proper parking space before continuing on foot. Do not rely on temporary roadside parking.

Know before you go

Respect the memorial

The hall documents the disaster, rescue and rebuilding of the city, and some scenes may be emotionally difficult. Take your time and keep your voice low. Read the accounts of the fire and rescue quietly rather than treating them as entertainment or photo opportunities.

Entry times and fire prevention

The memorial hall is closed on Mondays and may stop admitting visitors at 5:00 p.m. Confirm the day's information before visiting. Songyuan may also be closed on Mondays; check its hours separately. Songyuan is a wooded area where smoking is prohibited. Mosquitoes are common in summer, so bring repellent.

Meals and walking

The walking route is short, but the two places are across a street; watch children carefully when crossing. There are many dining options in town, so you can eat after your visit. If the exhibits feel emotionally heavy, take a short break at the library opposite.
