Plan at a glance

The North Gate and the scope of the scenic area

Jingpo Lake is in Ning'an, Mudanjiang. The usual navigation destination is “Jingpo Lake Scenic Area North Gate.” The North Gate Visitor Service Center handles ticketing and visitor transfers, and Diaoshuilou Waterfall is about 800 metres from the entrance. The lakeside boardwalk and Shanzhuang Pier are part of the longer extension route.

Tickets and time planning

The main admission ticket is about CNY 100 per person, or about CNY 50 in the low season; Diaoshuilou Waterfall is included in the scenic area. The sightseeing shuttle is about CNY 30, and a half-lake cruise is about CNY 100; cruises are paid separately. Opening arrangements for the core area may not match the operating times of the cruises, shuttle buses or cliff-diving show, so all-day access does not mean that every activity runs all day. Bring the identification document required for ticket purchase and confirm the accepted document type when buying on site.

Diaoshuilou Waterfall and the cliff-diving show

Diaoshuilou Waterfall drops over a volcanic-lava cliff face. Water flow is usually stronger after rain or during the flood season; in winter, the icefall and the unfrozen pool are the main seasonal sights. The cliff-diving show commonly uses 10:00 and 14:00 as reference times, mainly from May to October. The viewing platform can be crowded in peak season, so arrive 20–30 minutes early if you want to watch the full show; whether it runs is determined on site.

The lakeside boardwalk and Mao Gong Mountain

From the waterfall, the lakeside wooden boardwalk passes the Waterfall Viewing Bridge and Qijing Stele Garden before continuing to Shanzhuang Pier. A cruise or the lakeside route can both provide views of Mao Gong Mountain. A small pavilion near the Ningguta exit is useful for a closer view of the divers, while the front of the waterfall is better for a full panorama. The boardwalk is especially good for viewing yellow leaves in autumn.

Who this visit suits

Photography and nature enthusiasts can focus on the front view of the waterfall, the small pavilion and Mao Gong Mountain. Visitors travelling with parents may prefer the short route from the North Gate to the waterfall. Allow 2–3 hours for the waterfall alone, or 4–6 hours for the boardwalk, a half-lake cruise and the return to the North Gate. Plan for the icefall and winter fishing only in the relevant season.

For a separate volcanic-crater and Underground Forest route, see Volcanic Crater National Forest Park.

Build your day

The 2–3-hour waterfall route

Enter through the North Gate Visitor Service Center and walk about 10–15 minutes to Diaoshuilou. Start with the front view of the waterfall, then wait for the cliff-diving time listed that day. After taking photos, return the way you came, or use the path near the Ningguta exit to reach the small lakeside pavilion. The short route does not require a sightseeing shuttle ticket between the North Gate and the waterfall.

The 4–6-hour lakeside route

After the waterfall, follow the lakeside wooden boardwalk past the Waterfall Viewing Bridge and Qijing Stele Garden, then walk about 3 kilometres to Shanzhuang Pier. At the pier, take a half-lake cruise for views of Mao Gong Mountain, or stay on shore and begin the return. Once back on land, take the sightseeing shuttle to the North Gate according to the day's stops and departures, then eat or leave by car.

Choosing between the shuttle and the cruise

The sightseeing shuttle mainly serves the more distant piers, while walking is more direct for the short route. A half-lake cruise costs about CNY 100 and gives a water-level view of the long lake and Mao Gong Mountain. A full-lake cruise costs more; before buying, ask about the route length, departure time and that day's operation.

Get there

From Mudanjiang Station to the North Gate

From Mudanjiang Station, look for the tourist shuttle from the South Square to Jingpo Lake. The reference departure time is about 7:30, with a fare of about CNY 50; confirm the actual service on the day. Travellers coming from Harbin can first take a high-speed train to Mudanjiang. If you plan to catch the early tourist shuttle, check that the train arrives in time and consider staying overnight in Mudanjiang if necessary. There is no metro service to the scenic area. Driving from Harbin takes about 4–5 hours; set the navigation destination to the North Gate. The North Gate car park is listed as free for reference, but confirm before departure.

Between the North Gate, waterfall and pier

The waterfall is about 800 metres from the North Gate, so walk to the core viewing area first. If you continue to Shanzhuang Pier or take the longer lakeside route, buy the sightseeing shuttle ticket, about CNY 30, and travel according to the stops and departures.

Know before you go

Shows, icefalls and water levels

The cliff-diving times are reference times only, and the show may run less often in winter. Outside May–October, do not assume that a show will be operating. The icefall, unfrozen pool, winter fishing and waterfall flow all depend on the season and temperature. Confirm the day's show, cruise and shuttle schedules before setting out.

Queues, walking and meals

In peak season, arrive early to secure a place for the diving show. The longer lakeside route is about 3 kilometres. Take care on wet sections by the water, and do not touch the “lala grass.” If anyone in your group is not comfortable with a long walk, it is fine to stay around the waterfall. Farm-style restaurants are available near the North Gate and nearby; ask the unit price and serving size before ordering fish or other seasonal dishes.

Nearby attractions have separate tickets

Volcanic Crater National Forest Park is about 20 kilometres from the main scenic area and has separate tickets, shuttle arrangements and walking routes. Although Jingpo Canyon is close to the North Gate, it is an independent private paid attraction with its own ticket office and is not part of the Jingpo Lake 5A-rated scenic area. Do not include Jingpo Canyon in the Jingpo Lake admission ticket or the main Jingpo Lake sightseeing route.
