Plan at a glance
An independent attraction and its entrance
Volcanic Crater National Forest Park is in Ning'an, Mudanjiang. It is often scheduled on the same day as Jingpo Lake, but it has separate admission and its own internal transport. A practical navigation strategy is to set “Jingpo Lake Scenic Area North Gate” first, then follow the local directions to the volcanic-crater entrance.
Tickets and opening hours
Admission is about CNY 55 per person, and the sightseeing shuttle is about CNY 50 per person. The Lava Cave, Ancient Ice Cave and Underground Forest are far apart, so the shuttle is the practical way to move between them. Use 07:00–16:00 as the reference opening period; the last shuttle may fall anywhere from about 16:00 to 18:00, so confirm the day's departures before setting out.

Choose your visit
The Underground Forest and volcanic craters
The Underground Forest lies at the bottom of a volcanic crater, with old-growth forest and a loop boardwalk as its main sights. Qitian Pavilion stands high on No. 3 Crater and overlooks the crater. If you want the complete natural landscape, make the Underground Forest the main part of the visit rather than stopping briefly at the transport area.
Lava Cave and Ancient Ice Cave
The Lava Cave and Ancient Ice Cave can be visited before or after the Underground Forest, with about 10 minutes and 20 minutes respectively at each cave. The Ancient Ice Cave can still feel cold at the entrance in summer, but either cave may close temporarily because of a power outage. Keep the Underground Forest as the main route and allow 1.5–2.5 hours for it.
Who it suits best
The complete route is better suited to hikers, photographers and visitors seeking a cool summer escape. There are many steps, and the crater floor can be wet and slippery, making the route tiring; visitors with older adults or very young children should favour the simple loop. Group tours often allow only about one hour, which is usually not enough to reach the crater floor and climb to Qitian Pavilion.
Build your day
The 1.5–2-hour simple route
After entering, take the sightseeing shuttle to the Underground Forest entrance. Choose the easier route that enters from the exit side, walk only the small loop without descending to the crater floor, and return in about 40–60 minutes. Then view the crater from the observation platform and take a shuttle back to the park entrance according to the departure schedule. This option suits a tight schedule or limited stamina.
The 3–4-hour complete route
First take the shuttle to the Lava Cave and Ancient Ice Cave in sequence, then continue to the Underground Forest. Choose the more demanding route from the entrance side, descend along the boardwalk to the crater floor, walk around the crater, and finally climb to Qitian Pavilion for a full view of No. 3 Crater. The Underground Forest section takes about 1.5–2.5 hours; leave enough time to catch the return shuttle.
Group tour or self-drive
If you want to complete the Qitian Pavilion route, a direct shuttle or an independent trip gives you more of the 3–4 hours required. Round-trip direct shuttles of about CNY 50–80 can be checked at Mudanjiang Station or the Jingpo Lake Visitor Service Center. A private five-seat car may be charged about CNY 400–420 to enter the park, so leaving the car at the entrance is usually more practical.
Get there
From Mudanjiang or Jingpo Lake
Ask about round-trip direct shuttles at Mudanjiang Station or the Jingpo Lake Visitor Service Center. From Mudanjiang, you can also go to Jingpo Lake North Gate first and transfer there; driving from Harbin takes about 4–5 hours. There is no metro service to the park. The drive from Jingpo Lake North Gate to the volcanic crater takes about 20–30 minutes, and road conditions inside the park can be rough, with some gravel sections.
The sightseeing shuttle and parking
The attractions inside the park are far apart. The sightseeing shuttle runs about every 20 minutes, although departures may be scheduled or wait until the vehicle is full. Parking at the entrance is about CNY 5, with limited spaces; in peak season you may have to park farther away. The short walk from Jingpo Lake North Gate to Diaoshuilou Waterfall does not apply here.
Know before you go
Last shuttles and temporary closures
Use 07:00–16:00 as the reference opening period, while the last sightseeing shuttle may fall within a 16:00–18:00 range. Start the complete route early and ask about the return shuttle before getting off. The Lava Cave and Ancient Ice Cave may close temporarily; if either is closed, switch directly to the Underground Forest route.
Steps, slippery ground and forest safety
The crater-floor boardwalk has many steps and becomes more slippery in rain or snow. Wear shoes with good grip and choose the simple loop or complete route according to your ability. Snakes may be present in the forest, so stay on the wooden boardwalk. If someone in your group should not descend to the crater floor, remain at the observation platform rather than forcing the climb.
Supplies and combining attractions
There are few food options inside the park; the entrance and summit mainly have small kiosks, so prepare water and snacks in advance. After visiting, return to the Jingpo Lake North Gate area for a meal. Jingpo Lake and the volcanic-crater park require separate tickets and transport; one scenic-area ticket does not cover both.
