The open square and its main landmark
Bayi Square is at 317 Bayi Avenue in Donghu District. It is an open city space with several approaches, and the Bayi Nanchang Uprising Monument stands at the center. Allow about 30 minutes for the monument and a look at the surrounding urban space, or add nearby buildings, breakfast, and the evening crowd to a longer city walk.
Free entry and lighting hours
The square and monument are free, and no reservation is needed; the square is open all day. The monument is commonly lit from about 19:00–22:30, but the lighting schedule can change with the date and operations. Plan night photography around the day’s notice.
The Art Museum is a separate stop
Jiangxi Art Museum stands near the square’s central axis, so its exterior can be seen during a walk around the square. Entry requires a reservation made with valid identification. From Tuesday to Friday and on Sunday, it is open 09:00–17:00 with last entry at 16:30; on Saturday, it is open 09:00–21:00 with last entry at 20:30; it is closed on Monday. The museum’s ticketing and closing day do not change the square’s public access.

Bayi Nanchang Uprising Monument
The monument is the square’s main historical landmark, and its body carries an introduction to the August 1 Nanchang Uprising. Visitors interested in city history can walk around it from different angles and relate it to the square, roads, and nearby buildings. Jiangxi Art Museum: exterior and exhibitions
The museum was formerly the Jiangxi Exhibition Center. Its exterior blends Chinese and Western architectural styles, and the red star on the roof is part of the square’s visual identity. Visitors who want to see an exhibition need a separate reservation and the museum’s own opening window; whether a last-minute QR-code reservation is available depends on the site. Museum access and square access are separate.
Watching everyday city life
Morning and evening bring walkers, exercisers, and local residents through the square, making this a useful stop for visitors who want to see Nanchang’s everyday public life. Photographers can try the area near Metro Exit 3, the steps to the left of the monument, or the Wushang Mall sky garden on the fourth floor. The last is a mall-operated space, so entry and time spent there follow its on-site rules.

The 30-minute metro-exit route
Leave Bayi Square Station from Exit 3. Start with the exterior of Jiangxi Art Museum and its red star from the square steps or roadside, then walk to the central monument and circle it once. This short route can be completed at any time; it does not depend on a flag-raising ceremony or the lighting schedule.
The 1–2 hour loop around the square
From the metro exit, walk the square’s perimeter and take in the monument, central axis, and museum exterior. If you have a museum reservation, enter during that time window. In the evening, go to the fourth-floor sky garden at Wushang Mall for a higher view, then return to the square for the lit monument.
Timing a flag-raising and night views
Large flag-raising ceremonies are usually concentrated on the first day of the month and major festival dates; on ordinary days, expect the routine flag-raising and lowering schedule. Confirm the exact arrangement that day. If lighting or night views are the goal, complete the daytime square and museum section first, then decide whether to stay based on the lighting and mall viewpoint status.

Metro and walking range
Lines 1 and 2 both reach Bayi Square Station, and Exit 3 opens onto the core viewing area. The square has open entrances from several directions. Navigate to “Bayi Square” or “Bayi Nanchang Uprising Monument”; use the separate building name when heading to the museum or a mall viewpoint.
Old-city walking and parking
Roads and commercial facilities around the square are dense, with heavier pedestrian traffic on weekends, holidays, and evenings. Drivers should navigate to a specific car park and walk into the square. Metro works well for a short visit and for continuing between the square, Zhongshan Road, Jewelry Street, and other city routes.

Ceremonies, lighting, and public access
Large flag-raising ceremonies are not a daily fixed programme, and the monument lighting can also change. The square itself stays open all day, but ceremony zones, temporary events, and crowd controls can change where visitors may stand or take photos. Check the day’s notice or on-site directions.
Crowds and photography
Weekend and holiday evenings can be very busy, making a clear background around the monument difficult. Metro Exit 3 works for a frontal view of the museum, while the steps to the left of the monument can place people and architecture in one frame. The Wushang Mall sky garden may involve a queue, and night lights can create halos in phone photos.
Breakfast and rest
The nearby Dashiyuan (大士院) neighborhood has Nanchang rice noodles and clay-pot soup. Li Shifu Home Cooking, Huangji Clay-Pot Soup, and Mi Tang Memories are possible meal stops, subject to that day’s opening and queue conditions. Drinks are easier to find in nearby malls or shops; rest areas are not a fixed facility of the square.
