Tidal flats and visit length
Golden Beach is in the Yuantuojiao tourism-resort area of Qidong. Navigate to the Golden Beach Visitor Centre. This is a muddy tidal flat rather than a traditional sandy beach. The main experience depends on the tide, so enter the mudflat only within about two hours before or after low tide.
A quick visit takes about 1–2 hours, including the shuttle and a short stay on the tidal flat. To cover both the east and west harvesting areas, allow 3–5 hours. The reference peak-season period is May 1 to October 31, with tickets around CNY 25–30, opening hours around 08:30–17:30 and last ticket check at 16:30. Only consider entering around 04:00 if the site has clearly announced early opening for that day and the low tide matches; otherwise plan around the daytime hours.
Transport and tide planning
Public transport is inconvenient, so driving is the practical choice. The entrance is about 1.5 kilometres from the beach, and the sightseeing shuttle costs about CNY 20 per person. Parking is about CNY 10 per visit. Check the Qidong tide table before leaving; the tide, rather than the ticket hours alone, determines whether the day's harvesting experience is possible.

Tidal-flat harvesting
Golden Beach is for digging clams, collecting mud snails and looking for small crabs. The site periodically releases clams, so beginners may also find something. Early morning or late afternoon gives softer light for photographs, and the "I Love Qidong" and "Where the Yangtze Meets the Sea" stone markers are popular stops.
It suits families who enjoy outdoor activities and are comfortable with mud and tide limits. Visitors who want a flat sandy beach for swimming or sunbathing, or who do not want muddy shoes and clothes, should choose another coastal activity.
When to go
The larger tides around the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month can be better for seeing the tidal flat, but the actual tide and weather still control the visit. Go onto the mudflat only after the water has receded to a safe level; during the incoming tide there may be no usable shallow area.
Build your day
About 1–2 hours: a quick route
After entering, take the sightseeing shuttle about 1.1 kilometres to the beach. Take photographs near the tidal-flat marker, then use the low-tide window to dig for clams or look for small shellfish in the shallow area. Rinse your feet, change footwear if needed, and take the shuttle back to the entrance.
This route suits visitors with limited time. Keep the mudflat section within about two hours before or after low tide; when the tide has not receded, remain in the viewing and photo areas instead of entering deep mud.
About 3–5 hours: a full route
If early entry has been clearly announced for the day and low tide falls around 04:00–05:00, take the shuttle to the fenced area in the east zone to dig for clams and look for hermit crabs, then rest or eat inside the site. If there is no early-opening arrangement, enter during the daytime hours and wait for low tide before going onto the mudflat. In the afternoon, use the tide to decide whether to visit the west zone for small fish, shrimp and crabs, then rinse your feet, change and take the shuttle back.
The east and west zones offer different activities. When there is only one suitable low-tide window, complete one zone first and leave the other for another visit.
Get there
Driving and parking
Navigate to the Golden Beach Visitor Centre; driving is the most practical option. Parking is about CNY 10 per visit. The 1.5-kilometre route from the entrance to the beach can be covered by shuttle, which is useful when travelling with children or carrying harvesting tools.
Footwear and equipment
Wear non-slip river shoes or rain boots. Do not go barefoot or wear flip-flops on the mudflat. Soft mud, broken shells and hidden deep spots can cause cuts or loss of balance; children should stay in shallow areas and away from deep mud.
Know before you go
Tide and safety
The tide determines whether harvesting is possible. The useful window is about two hours before or after low tide. Before entering, check the direction of the water and the return time, wear non-slip footwear and avoid deep mud. Stop entering the tidal flat if the tide turns or the weather changes.
The mudflat has little shade, so summer visitors need sun protection, water and spare clothes. Food inside the site can be expensive; bring water and simple food if useful, and expect queues at nearby restaurants during weekend meal times.
Area boundaries and nearby stops
Golden Beach's fees and harvesting conditions apply to this site. Jiang-Hai Confluence Viewing Platform, Yuantuojiao Scenic Area and other coastal projects are separately managed. If you add Yuantuojiao, plan the drive and its own opening conditions separately.
