Make sure you have the right museum
China Escort Agency Museum is at No. 61 South Street in Pingyao Ancient City. Its focus is the escort industry’s rules, equipment and daily working methods. Another venue in the ancient city is called the “North China First Escort Agency Museum”; the names are similar but the museums are different. Start here with the escort chest, single-wheel cart and industry rules, while the other venue focuses more on stories about individual figures.
From Yingxun Gate (South Gate), walk north along South Street. Use the full name “China Escort Agency Museum” when navigating and finding the façade, then compare the sign, address and ticket with the destination before entering.
Tickets and hours
China Escort Agency Museum is one of Pingyao Ancient City’s 22 core attractions and uses the adult CNY 125 pass, valid for three days after activation with one entry per attraction. Entry to the ancient city currently requires an advance ID-based reservation; confirm the requirement through the Pingyao Ancient City Scenic Area official service platform before setting out. Follow the day’s on-site rules before entering the museum.
In summer, the usual hours are 8:00–18:30, with ticket checks ending at 18:15. Seasonal arrangements and the open areas on the day may change. For an evening walk, confirm the closing and last-entry times first; the public hours of South Street do not extend the museum’s opening.

Equipment and escort rules
The escort chest weighs about 50 kg (100 jin) and needs two keys to open. The single-wheel cart was designed for transport across the terrain of the Loess Plateau. Look at the equipment’s size, structure and working environment first, then visit the exhibition to see how escort agencies organised transport; the industry becomes clearer than it would from a photograph of the single character “escort.”
The exhibition also introduces industry rules, jianghu code words and ways of managing risk. It gives “three things not to stay with” and “three things not to leave without” as examples, and explains “washing the face” as a way of saying that someone has returned home. Read the code words with the museum displays rather than turning them into a martial-arts story or biography.
Who it suits
Visitors interested in Shanxi merchants’ logistics, historic transport and industry rules can allow 40–60 minutes for the front courtyard, exhibition rooms and rear courtyard. For a short stop, allow 30 minutes and focus on the single-wheel cart, escort chest and one set of rules.
Photographers can look for the red “escort” character at the entrance, single-wheel cart, weapons rack and rear training yard. Archery and escort-drum activities in the rear yard depend on the day’s opening and staff arrangements. Keep the training area and visitor path clear while taking photographs.
Build your day
A 30-minute short route
Enter the front courtyard and begin with the single-wheel cart. Continue to the exhibition rooms for the escort agency’s history and rules such as “three things not to stay with” and “three things not to leave without.” Finish in the rear courtyard, where you can see any activities open that day, and leave through the exit. Allow about 30 minutes as one stop during a South Street walk.
If the rear-yard activities are open, join archery or beat the escort drum under staff direction. If they are closed, see the training yard and equipment instead. After leaving, return to South Street: City Tower and Rishengchang are to the north, while Yingxun Gate is to the south. Add the lane walking time to the next stop.
A 40–60 minute themed route
To follow the flow of Shanxi merchant finance and transport in one day, start at Rishengchang, continue to Xietongqing, and finish at China Escort Agency Museum. Rishengchang covers drafts and accounting, Xietongqing covers its ten-chamber underground vault, and this museum covers escort chests, carts and industry rules. Visit each stop through its own entrance and follow its own on-site route.
The 40–60 minutes applies to China Escort Agency Museum itself; walking and queues between the first two museums take additional time. If time is limited, keep the front courtyard and exhibition rooms and decide about the rear-yard activities according to the day’s conditions rather than extending the route just to include every activity.
Stop order along South Street
Walking north from South Gate, take in the street and the outside of City Tower before entering China Escort Agency Museum. Continue to other selected compounds afterwards. Each ticketed attraction has its own ticket check and opening status; free passage along South Street does not automatically include every courtyard.
If someone in your group is not joining an interactive activity, meet at the exit or in an open section of South Street. The museum route ends at its exit. The city wall, County Yamen and temples outside the city each need separate planning; the 30-minute museum visit is not a full-day itinerary.
Get there
Walk north from Yingxun Gate
After entering through Yingxun Gate (South Gate), walk north along South Street to No. 61. Crowds are heavier around South Gate, so use the building number and full museum name while walking. From another city entrance, No. 61 South Street remains the navigation anchor.
Vehicles cannot enter the core lanes, so leave the car near a gate and walk to the museum. Parking near the visitor centre, Small South Gate and other gates belongs to the city’s general transport arrangements. Include the South Street walk in the overall timing; shuttles stop outside the gates.
Where to go after leaving
The exit returns you to South Street. Walk north towards City Tower or West Street, or south back to Yingxun Gate, then continue to the City God Temple, Confucian Temple or another selected attraction. If you want to visit the other escort museum, check its sign and full name first so the two venues’ tickets and exhibitions do not get mixed together.
Arrange outside vehicles and the return trip at the city gate. Ride-hailing cars cannot enter South Street to collect passengers. After a rear-yard activity, return or leave the activity area as staff instruct, then meet your companions at the exit.
Know before you go
Guides and interactive activities
Escort rules, jianghu code words and the risks of transporting valuables may be unfamiliar to first-time visitors. An official guide or audio guide can provide context when available; service and price depend on the day. A person who approaches you with an unsolicited explanation is not necessarily museum staff, so politely decline if you do not want a shopping stop.
Archery and escort-drum activities may change with the day’s arrangements. Read the activity sign and follow staff directions. In the rear yard, do not cross the practice area or climb onto or touch weapons racks, escort chests or carts.
Photography and supplies
The red “escort” character at the entrance, escort chest, single-wheel cart and rear training yard are the main photography points. Follow the museum signs for indoor photography and flash restrictions, and move aside after taking photographs in a narrow exhibition room.
After leaving, continue along South Street to other compounds or turn into Yamen Street for food. Liang Xiansen Yogurt at No. 92 South Street is one possible rest stop; check its opening status and prices at the shop that day. Food is a post-visit break, not part of the museum route.
