Location and main focus
Pingyao County Yamen is at No. 77 Yamen Street, on the north side of the middle section of the street. This administrative complex extends from offices to living quarters, a jail and a rear garden. Walking through the main hall, ceremonial gate, inner residence and jail shows how hearings, daily administration and the magistrate’s home occupied one compound.
Walk there from Lower West Gate or South Gate; the entrance is on the north side of Yamen Street. The main visit is the courtyard layout and building sequence. Live performances may be offered, but they are an extra part of the visit and should not dictate the route until the day’s programme is confirmed.
Tickets and opening hours
The County Yamen is one of Pingyao Ancient City’s 22 core attractions and uses the adult CNY 125 pass, valid for three days after activation with one entry per attraction. Entry to the ancient city currently requires an advance ID-based reservation; confirm the requirement through the Pingyao Ancient City Scenic Area official service platform before setting out. Follow the day’s ticket-check rules when entering.
In summer, the usual hours are 8:00–18:30, with ticket checks ending at 18:15. Seasonal arrangements and the open areas on the day may change. At the entrance, check the performance times and closing time separately.

Reading the administrative spaces
The “Mirror-Hanging High” signboard in the main hall, the ceremonial gate and the front courtyard establish the working order of the yamen. Continue towards the inner residence and rear garden. The layout is often described as “civil offices on the left, military offices on the right; public court in front, private residence behind.” Compare the uses of the different courtyards to see how working and living areas were separated.
Daxian Tower stands on the central axis and was built in 1346 during the Yuan dynasty. It is a surviving Yuan-dynasty building within the yamen. There are cave dwellings below, while the upper level houses Shouyin Daxian, the immortal associated with guarding the official seal. Treat it as a distinct architectural stop within the yamen.
Ways to plan the visit
To understand the yamen within an hour, prioritise the main hall, ceremonial gate, inner residence, Daxian Tower and jail. Visitors interested in the layout can add the rear garden and allow 1.5–2 hours. For photography, the front of the main hall and the jail doorway are useful views; stay clear of paths and queues while composing a shot.
To compare ritual, popular-religious and administrative spaces in the ancient city, combine the Confucian Temple, City God Temple and County Yamen. Their proximity does not give them shared opening hours or guiding arrangements, so follow each attraction’s own entrance information.
Build your day
A 40–60 minute County Yamen route
Enter and begin at the main hall with the “Mirror-Hanging High” signboard. Pass through the ceremonial gate to the inner residence, examine Daxian Tower, then continue to the jail and leave through the exit. Allow 40–60 minutes; the order links the yamen’s office, living and detention spaces in one continuous route.
If a courtroom performance or embroidered-ball matchmaking show is taking place, watch from the position indicated by staff without blocking the route. When there is no performance, continue through the courtyards in order. After leaving, return to Yamen Street and choose between the Confucian Temple, City God Temple or South Street.
A 1.5–2 hour combined route
For a themed route, start at the Confucian Temple, walk through the ancient-city lanes to the City God Temple, and finish at the County Yamen. Allow 1.5–2 hours. The Confucian Temple covers ritual and the imperial examination tradition, the City God Temple covers popular-religious space, and the County Yamen ends with the main hall, inner residence and jail.
This timing includes walking and separate ticket checks at all three attractions, but not waiting for a live performance that appears unexpectedly. If the County Yamen is your last stop, walk towards South Street for food afterwards. If you also want the city wall, add its entrance, walking and clearing time separately.
Handling live performances
The regular courtroom performance times are 09:30, 11:00 and 15:30. On weekends and public holidays, a 16:50 show may be added or the schedule may change. Whether an embroidered-ball matchmaking show is offered can also vary with the season, weather and crowds. Read the official notice and ask staff on arrival; include a performance as one stop if it is running, and continue with the building route if it is not.
Even when a performance is available, its length and interaction format may change. Watch from the designated area and keep the crowd moving. For architectural context, ask about an official guide or audio guide; keep enough time for the main hall, inner residence and jail instead of compressing the buildings around an unconfirmed show.
Get there
Walk in from either side
The County Yamen is at No. 77 Yamen Street and is walkable from Lower West Gate or South Gate. Navigate to “Pingyao County Yamen” and Yamen Street No. 77, then look for the façade and entrance on the north side of the street rather than searching only for the city centre.
Outside vehicles cannot enter the core lanes and should remain near the city gates. Include the walk from the parking area, the crowds on Yamen Street and the ticket check in the arrival time. A vehicle cannot wait directly in front of the yamen.
Where to go afterwards
After leaving the County Yamen, walk east towards the main commercial area of South Street, with the Confucian Temple and City God Temple also available nearby. If you are returning to another gate, choose the lanes according to your accommodation and parking location. Travelling from the yamen to a temple outside the ancient city or to the theatre requires separate transport planning.
If companions are leaving after a performance, agree on a meeting point in the open area of Yamen Street rather than waiting at the main hall, ceremonial gate or jail entrance. The ancient-city lanes are mainly explored on foot, and ride-hailing cars cannot enter the road directly outside the yamen.

Performances and explanations can change
The regular courtroom performance times are 09:30, 11:00 and 15:30, with a possible 16:50 addition or adjustment on weekends and public holidays. Read the notice on arrival and make the buildings the main visit; watch a performance if one fits naturally into the route.
The yamen’s layout, detention spaces and Daxian Tower contain a lot of detail. An official guide or audio guide may be available. An unsolicited explanation is not necessarily a service provided by the yamen; politely decline if you do not plan to buy anything, and keep to the route you have chosen.
Photography, walking and food
The front of the main hall works for a low-angle photograph of the signboard and central axis, while the jail entrance offers a view through the doorway. Let people pass before taking photographs. Follow the signs for photography inside halls, near displays and during performances, and avoid staying in narrow areas for a long time.
After the visit, try Dongji Fried Wantuo on Yamen Street or return to South Street for home-style Shanxi food. Opening status and dishes depend on the day. There are no fixed food facilities inside the yamen, so arrange the meal after leaving and set the next stop according to the time available.
