Plan at a glance

Find West Street No. 38

Rishengchang Draft Bank is at No. 38 West Street in Pingyao Ancient City. The former draft bank includes a front hall, accounting rooms, courtyards and underground spaces. It suits visitors who want to understand Shanxi merchants’ remittance system through one compound; the focus is on how the bank handled drafts, accounts and silver, rather than on quickly viewing another street façade.

From Lower West Gate or South Gate, walk through the city lanes towards West Street. The entrance is on one side of the main street, so check the building number and the on-site entrance when you arrive rather than mistaking another draft bank’s façade for Rishengchang.

Tickets and visiting hours

Rishengchang is one of Pingyao Ancient City’s 22 core attractions and uses the adult CNY 125 pass, valid for three days after activation with one entry per attraction. Entry to the ancient city currently requires an advance ID-based reservation; confirm the requirement through the Pingyao Ancient City Scenic Area official service platform before setting out. Follow the day’s ticket-check and opening notices when entering the compound.

In summer, the usual hours are 8:00–18:30, and the low-season schedule may be shorter. If you want photographs or an explanation, work back from the day’s opening and last-entry times rather than applying the night activity hours of the nearby street to the compound.

What to look for inside the draft bank

In the front hall, start with the “Huitong Tianxia” signboard and the overall layout of the draft bank. The accounting area introduces the anti-forgery system for drafts. Passwords could use passages from the Thousand Character Classic and be checked with handwriting, seals and other details; these systems show how a draft bank handled long-distance remittances more clearly than the counter alone.

The rear courtyard and the vault beneath the accounting rooms are Rishengchang’s main focus. They are separate from the underground vault at Xietongqing. The Rishengchang route centres on the concealed vault entrance beneath the accounting area and the bank’s business, without blending in the structure or stories of the other vault.

Who it suits

Visitors interested in financial history, Shanxi merchants’ commercial networks and historic buildings can allow 40–60 minutes for the accounting rooms, signboards, corridors and anti-forgery displays. If you only want a quick introduction to the draft-bank system, a 20–30 minute route can cover the front hall, accounting rooms, rear courtyard and underground vault.

Photographers can look for the counter, signboards, second-floor corridor and courtyard views. The compound is often less crowded at opening time, making the frames cleaner. Choose the stopping points according to your purpose and available time.

Build your day

A 20–30 minute short route

Enter through the front hall and start with the “Huitong Tianxia” signboard. Continue to the accounting rooms for the draft anti-forgery system, then move through the rear courtyard and descend to the vault beneath the accounting area before returning to the exit. Allow 20–30 minutes; this works well as one stop during a West Street walk.

If there is a queue for the vault entrance, see the front hall and accounting rooms first, then follow the on-site route into the underground space. Afterwards, return to West Street and continue on foot or walk back towards Lower West Gate or South Gate. The 20–30 minutes inside Rishengchang excludes the time through the city lanes to the next stop.

A 40–60 minute finance route

With 40–60 minutes, follow this order: front-hall signboard, accounting-room anti-forgery details, courtyard architecture, underground vault and second-floor corridor. At each stop, first read the display and understand the relationship between the spaces, then photograph counters, door lintels or corridors. An official guide or audio guide can add context when available.

After Rishengchang, continue along West Street to other Shanxi-merchant compounds, or make Xietongqing or the China Escort Agency Museum the next independent stop. Each attraction has its own entrance and focus; the Rishengchang route ends at its own exit, and the walking connection takes additional time.

Fit it into a day route

For a western-city route starting at Lower West Gate, visit Rishengchang first and then move towards South Street. From South Gate, walk along the main street to West Street and return towards City Tower or another compound afterwards. Keep Rishengchang within the daytime opening period instead of compressing the visit to chase an explanation or performance time that has not been confirmed.

If someone in your group only wants the short route, meet near the Rishengchang exit while the rest of the group continues along West Street. Vehicles cannot enter the core lanes, so handle the return to parking or accommodation outside the city gates.

Get there

Walk from the city gates

From Lower West Gate, walk through the lanes to West Street No. 38. From South Gate, follow the main street and turn towards West Street. Set “Rishengchang Draft Bank” and West Street No. 38 as the navigation targets, then use the building number on arrival to identify the entrance.

Rishengchang has no separate vehicle drop-off point outside the city. Vehicles must remain near a gate, followed by a walk into the city. From the high-speed railway station, reach the city gate first, then begin the West Street walk; that outside transfer is separate from the compound’s visiting time.

Move on after the visit

The exit returns you to West Street, where you can continue to other Shanxi-merchant compounds or head towards South Street and City Tower. If you want to cover both finance and escort culture in one day, plan Rishengchang, Xietongqing and the China Escort Agency Museum by their individual entrances; each building has its own ticket check and visit route.

When travelling from Rishengchang to the city wall, County Yamen or an attraction outside the city, recalculate the lane walking and transport beyond the gate. The Rishengchang route ends at its own exit; the wall, Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple each require a separate arrival plan.

Know before you go

Explanations and viewing order

Rishengchang’s financial records, password system and accounting practices may be unfamiliar to first-time visitors. An official guide or audio guide may be available; the service, price and language options depend on the day’s arrangements.

The counters, signboards and corridors reward a slower look, but stop where you do not block doorways, stairs or the vault passage. Do not occupy a narrow entrance for a long time; companions can wait at the exit or in a more open courtyard.

Photography and time choices

Opening time is often quieter for photographs of the “Huitong Tianxia” signboard, old-style accounting desk and second-floor corridor. Natural light and crowd levels vary with the date and weather. Follow the compound’s signs and staff instructions for photography at counters, in underground spaces and near displays.

Both Rishengchang and Xietongqing involve underground vaults, but they are different visits. Rishengchang focuses on the vault beneath the accounting rooms and the draft-bank business; Xietongqing focuses on its ten-chamber underground vault and its own displays. Arrange food or the return trip after leaving, and use each compound’s own opening hours for that compound.
