Entering the ancient city
Pingyao Ancient City is a square, still-inhabited historic city enclosed by about 6.4 km of walls. Yingxun Gate (South Gate) leads straight to South Street and is the easiest entrance for a first visit, but it is also the busiest. Lower West Gate is similarly walkable to the core area and usually gives you a calmer start.
Entry to Pingyao Ancient City itself is free, but visitors currently need an advance reservation using their identity details; confirm the requirement through the Pingyao Ancient City Scenic Area official service platform before setting out. The 22 core attractions use one adult pass priced at CNY 125, valid for three days after activation with one entry per attraction. South Street is a free public street, while independent compounds such as Rishengchang, Xietongqing and the China Escort Agency Museum require the pass for entry.
Tickets and timing
The adult pass costs CNY 125, is valid for three days after activation and allows one entry to each attraction. Whether it is worthwhile depends on how many ticketed compounds you plan to enter. With limited time, choose a few different types first, such as the city wall, Rishengchang, the County Yamen, the Confucian Temple and the City God Temple.
In summer, the usual opening period is 8:00–18:30, with ticket checks ending at 18:15. Seasonal arrangements and the open areas of individual attractions may change, so check the official service platform before entering and read the day’s notices at the gates.

What to see first
For the city’s overall shape, plan the city wall before sunset. The South Gate section can give you views of the gate tower, Pingyao Ancient City Tower (市楼) and the grey-tiled roofs inside the city at the same time. For the history of Shanxi merchants, Rishengchang and Xietongqing Draft Bank Museum (协同庆票号博物馆) offer different perspectives. The County Yamen, Confucian Temple and City God Temple represent administrative, ritual and popular-religious spaces respectively.
See Pingyao Again is an independent theatre outside the South Gate; its tickets and performance times are separate from the ancient-city pass. Visitors who enjoy architectural detail can add Ma Family Compound. When time is short, keep a few representative attractions and give the city wall and the performance enough uninterrupted time for a more coherent day.
Combine the city by interest
For the Ming-and-Qing urban layout, combine South Street, City Tower and the city wall, then turn from the lanes into one ticketed compound. For the history of Shanxi merchants, choose Rishengchang, Xietongqing and the China Escort Agency Museum; their exhibitions cover different themes and work better as separate stops.
For photographers, the South Gate section of the wall works well in the hour before sunset, while City Tower is best after the street lights come on. During the day, Ma Family Compound offers detailed brick and wood carvings. Treat See Pingyao Again as a separate booked theatre visit outside the ancient city and reserve a dedicated time slot for it.
Build your day
A 3–4 hour short route
Enter through Lower West Gate, walk to Rishengchang, then continue to City Tower and the County Yamen before moving on to the Confucian Temple and City God Temple. If you also want to climb the wall, start at the South Gate instead, walk one section and descend at a suitable exit. Allow 3–4 hours, then walk from the final usable exit back to your parking area or accommodation.
The purpose of this route is to establish a sense of the ancient city through a few representative stops: street scale at the entrance, merchant-finance and administrative compounds in the middle, and a high viewpoint on the wall at the end. The County Yamen’s courtroom performance schedule changes, so do not plan the short route around times circulating online; follow the day’s notice if a performance is offered.
A 1–2 day highlights route
On day one, enter through Lower West Gate, stop first at Pingyao Film Palace for photographs, then visit Rishengchang, Xietongqing, the China Escort Agency Museum and the County Yamen. If your group has the energy, climb the wall in the evening from the South Gate section for views over the roofs and City Tower. On day two, add the Confucian Temple, City God Temple, Qingxu Temple or Ma Family Compound, and place See Pingyao Again in a separate time slot outside the ancient city.
The ancient city is mainly explored on foot. Every additional compound adds entrance time, queues and walking inside the city to the schedule. Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple are outside the city and need their own transport and return plans; they do not fit naturally into a one-day walking loop inside the ancient city.
Get there
Distinguish the two railway stations
From Pingyao Ancient City Station, you can take Bus 108, which takes about 40 minutes, or a scenic-area shuttle, which takes about 15 minutes. A taxi or shared ride costs about CNY 20–30. Pingyao Ancient City Station and Pingyao Station have different distances and transfer options, so confirm the station name before choosing transport.
Pingyao Station serves conventional trains and is usually about a 10-minute walk from the ancient city. Once you arrive, Yingxun Gate gives direct access to South Street, while Lower West Gate can avoid some of the South Gate crowds. Choose the gate according to the day’s route and where you have left your luggage.
Where vehicles can stop
Outside vehicles, including ride-hailing cars, are restricted from the core lanes. The city has dedicated yellow electric carts costing about CNY 10 per ride, but they cannot enter the core area, so planning around walking is more reliable. Flat, non-slip shoes suitable for long walks are more useful than arranging repeated short transfers.
Drivers can ask about parking near the visitor centre, Small South Gate and other city gates; the usual charge is about CNY 10 per session. Leave the car at the selected lot, enter on foot and follow either the short route or the one- to two-day highlights plan.
Know before you go
Crowds, spending and food
South Street is the busiest commercial area, especially around Yingxun Gate. For food, look in the lanes on either side of the main street; a bowl of knife-cut noodles on the main street can cost as much as CNY 30. Defulou Restaurant, a fried-chicken-leg stall near Lower West Gate and Guiping Pork Loin Flatbread are possible alternatives, subject to the day’s menu, prices and opening status.
Tour guides, cart drivers or people presenting themselves as local recommendations may approach visitors and lead them to shopping stops. If you do not intend to buy anything, a direct refusal is enough. Ask about the price, route and drop-off point before taking a hailed sightseeing or electric cart, so the transport does not disrupt a walking route you have already chosen.
Leave room for weather and the return trip
The attractions are close together, but the walls, compounds and lanes still involve substantial walking. Stone paving, brick surfaces and wall slopes can put extra strain on your feet. Before climbing the wall near sunset, check the clearing time. If you are attending See Pingyao Again, check the theatre’s ticket, performance and entry arrangements separately; its ticket is not an ancient-city pass.
The South Gate wall is suitable for photography in the hour before sunset, and City Tower works well after the lights come on. Photography does not override ticket-check or clearing rules. Confirm the day’s arrangements for attractions, food, parking and the return trip separately, and plan transport to Shuanglin Temple or Zhenguo Temple outside the walking routes inside the city.
