Find the entrance on South Street
Xietongqing Draft Bank Museum is at No. 45 South Street in Pingyao Ancient City. From Yingxun Gate (South Gate), walk north along the main street. It is close to the city’s commercial core and fits naturally into a South Street walk, but entering the compound still depends on the entrance and ticket-check signs on the day.
The underground vault is the main attraction. The front courtyard, vault, Dragon Treasure Pillar and Well of Gold involve changes in level, so allow 20–30 minutes for the basic visit, including stairs, queues and time underground.
Tickets and opening hours
Xietongqing is one of Pingyao Ancient City’s 22 core attractions and uses the adult CNY 125 pass, valid for three days after activation with one entry per attraction. Entry to the ancient city currently requires an advance ID-based reservation; confirm the requirement through the Pingyao Ancient City Scenic Area official service platform before setting out. Check the day’s ticket and entrance rules before going in.
In summer, the usual hours are 8:00–18:30, and the low-season schedule may be shorter. Crowds and ventilation underground affect how comfortable the visit feels. Near last entry, confirm the exit direction before deciding whether to descend to the vault.

Make the ten-chamber vault the main stop
Xietongqing’s main attraction is its ten-chamber, cave-style underground vault, one of the larger surviving underground vaults in Pingyao. It includes displays about dark passages and mechanisms. The figure of five million taels of silver at the bank’s peak belongs to the historical exhibition; read it together with the on-site explanation.
The Dragon Treasure Pillar in the centre of the vault is carved from Ming-dynasty camphor wood. Local stories connect it with a century of financial good fortune. Walking around it clockwise or touching the pillar is not a visitor requirement; follow the protection rules for photography and contact. This lets you understand the folk story without encouraging visitors to touch the display.
The Well of Gold and courtyard details
The Well of Gold is a square opening that shows the connection between the ground level and the underground vault. The courtyard also carries folk explanations about lowering silver underground in bamboo baskets and the origin of the Chinese term “cash withdrawal.” Look at the well opening and its spatial relationship with the vault before returning to the courtyard.
Photographers can include the display of a pit filled with gold ingots, the Dragon Treasure Pillar and the Well of Gold. Lighting, standing positions and permitted photography areas underground depend on site management. Keep the passage clear for group photographs; the underground layout of the other draft bank belongs to its own attraction.
Build your day
A 20–30 minute short route
Enter the front courtyard, take in the layout and then descend to the underground vault. Follow the route through the ten cave chambers and silver displays, then see the Dragon Treasure Pillar and Well of Gold before following the exit signs. Allow 20–30 minutes; the queue for the vault and the flow underground determine the actual timing.
At busy times, read the displays in the front courtyard while the passage clears, then enter the underground area. After leaving Xietongqing, return to South Street: City Tower and Rishengchang are to the north, while the City God Temple area lies to the south. Add the walking and ticket-check time for the next attraction.
A 40–60 minute themed route
With 40–60 minutes, start at Rishengchang on the West Street side for the draft-bank theme, then walk to Xietongqing. Focus here on the ten-chamber underground vault, Well of Gold and Dragon Treasure Pillar before leaving through the South Street exit. The two draft banks are separate visits: Rishengchang covers drafts and accounting, while Xietongqing covers underground spaces and vault displays.
Afterwards, continue along South Street or visit the China Escort Agency Museum. Follow the day’s entrance and opening notices. The 40–60 minutes at Xietongqing covers the themed stop only and does not include the walk between the previous and next attraction.
Pace your time underground
Inside the vault, follow staff directions or the marked route through the chambers, displays and pillar. The exit may require you to return along the designated passage or continue forward. If someone in your group is uncomfortable underground, agree on a meeting point in the front courtyard or near the exit instead of repeatedly passing through the narrow passage.
If the vault is crowded, stuffy or poorly lit, shorten the underground portion and spend the remaining time in the courtyard and with the displays. Do not walk against the flow repeatedly for a photograph of the gold-ingot display; decide after leaving whether to add another South Street attraction.
Get there
Walk from Yingxun Gate
Yingxun Gate (South Gate) is the most direct reference point for No. 45 South Street. After entering, walk north along South Street and use the building number and on-site signs to find the Xietongqing entrance. Many commercial shopfronts are nearby, so the façade and the ticket-check entrance may require a closer look.
Outside vehicles cannot enter the core lanes, so leave the car near a city gate and walk in. Transfers from the high-speed railway station or Pingyao Station need to be arranged separately. Once you reach the gate, start the South Street walk; parking and the underground visit use separate time budgets.
Where to go after the visit
From Xietongqing, walk north on South Street towards City Tower and Rishengchang, or south towards the City God Temple area. Each attraction has its own entrance and ticket-check rules. If the China Escort Agency Museum is next, use the full name as the destination rather than searching for a general escort-museum label that may lead to another venue.
When finishing your ancient-city day, return to the agreed gate or parking area before arranging transport out. Xietongqing is inside the ancient city, and a ride-hailing car cannot collect you directly from the South Street entrance.
Know before you go
Underground conditions and site rules
The underground vault is a popular stop and may become crowded, poorly ventilated and stuffy at peak times. Visitors sensitive to enclosed spaces can see the front courtyard and displays first, then decide whether the underground environment feels suitable. Leave along the exit if you feel unwell.
The Dragon Treasure Pillar, Well of Gold, gold-ingot display and cave chambers are part of the exhibition environment. Follow the on-site rules for photography, contact and where to stand. “Touching it for luck” is only a folk saying, not part of the visit; keep away from the wood carving and other displays.
Explanations, photography and supplies
The compound covers the draft-bank business, vault structure and silver transport. An official guide or audio guide may be available; its availability and price depend on the day. If no suitable explanation is available, follow the displays through the ten-chamber vault, Well of Gold and Dragon Treasure Pillar and you will still cover the main sights.
After leaving, use the side lanes beside South Street for food or a rest; restaurants there are usually better value than those on the main street. Read the menu and prices before ordering. Keep food and drinks out of restricted exhibition spaces and plan the meal after the underground visit.
