Where South Street runs
Ming and Qing Dynasties Street usually refers to South Street in Pingyao Ancient City. It runs north from Yingxun Gate to the intersection of East and West Streets near City Tower, making it one of the city’s main traditional commercial streets. For a first visit, enter through South Gate and you will reach the southern end of the street immediately, a straightforward way to get a sense of the city’s scale and the location of City Tower.
The street is lined with shops, restaurants and courtyards that can be visited separately. Public passage along the street and ticket checks at the compounds are separate: walking South Street is free, while independent attractions such as Rishengchang, Xietongqing and the China Escort Agency Museum require the ancient-city pass. South Street itself is not a ticketed attraction.
How much time to allow
For the street scenery and the outside of City Tower, allow 30–40 minutes to walk north from Yingxun Gate to the tower and finish on South Street or at a nearby exit. Adding one or more courtyards takes about 1–1.5 hours, with each piaohao, escort museum or other attraction checked separately according to the entrance notice.
South Street works at the beginning or in the middle of an ancient-city day. Before 8:00, the crowds are usually lighter for photographs of City Tower. After 20:00, the lit street can be more attractive, but ticketed compounds do not extend their hours simply because the public street remains lively at night.

Street details worth noticing
City Tower is the visual centre of the street. From the Yingge Lane archway at the north end of South Street, the archway and the street’s depth can frame the tower. Along the way, look for the brackets, upturned eaves and signboard of the “Jingcheng Xuande” archway; the details stand out more clearly under the warm evening lights.
The South Gate tower gives you another angle over South Street, and crowds may thin after 18:00 as the light softens. The façades of the compounds work well for a quick look from the street. Once you enter Rishengchang or Xietongqing, follow that attraction’s own route and exhibition focus.
Who will enjoy the walk
Visitors interested in the city’s layout can treat South Street as a north–south axis: walk the street first, then decide which compound to enter. Architecture photographers can photograph City Tower and the archways in the morning and the illuminated façades at night. Visitors interested in the commercial side can pay attention to menus, shop signs and how local products are presented.
If someone in your group has limited walking stamina, make the section from South Gate to City Tower a self-contained stroll and rest in a side lane afterwards. For Shanxi merchant and finance history, turn west towards West Street. For administrative architecture, turn towards Yamen Street. These turns extend the route beyond the street scenery and lead to separate attractions.
Build your day
A 30–40 minute street route
Enter through Yingxun Gate (South Gate) and walk north along South Street. Start with the shops and façades on both sides, then see City Tower from outside before returning along the same route or leaving through the nearest gate or exit. Allow 30–40 minutes and keep this as a street walk without entering several compounds.
If the area around City Tower is crowded, begin with photographs from Yingge Lane and then walk south or turn into a side lane. Afterwards, walk back to the parking area outside South Gate or continue to the next section of the city. Vehicles must remain near the gates and cannot enter the street to collect passengers.
A 1–1.5 hour street-and-courtyard route
Enter at Yingxun Gate and walk north along South Street, taking in the street scenery before turning into West Street near City Tower or the main crossroads for Rishengchang. If you also visit Xietongqing, return towards City Tower and then South Street. Follow the entrance rules for each compound and leave from the northern section of South Street or another convenient exit. The highlights route takes about 1–1.5 hours, plus queues and ticket checks at the compounds.
The names of the escort-museum venues along South Street can be easy to confuse. These are separate buildings, and their exhibitions, interactive elements and opening hours are not interchangeable.
Connect with nearby lanes
Turn west from South Street into West Street for Rishengchang and other Shanxi-merchant attractions. From the west side of the street, turn towards Yamen Street for the County Yamen and nearby snack shops. At each turn, check the specific street name and building number on the map before deciding whether there is time for another ticketed attraction.
If you plan to climb the city wall, finish the street section near South Gate and then use the wall’s separate entrance. The wall has its own walking distance and clearing time, so the 30–40 minute South Street walk does not include it. For See Pingyao Again, leave the ancient city through South Gate and continue separately to the theatre ticket centre; the theatre ticket is separate as well.
Get there
South Gate is the most direct start
Yingxun Gate (South Gate) is the usual starting point for South Street, with the southern end of the street immediately inside the gate. South Gate is often crowded. For a calmer approach, enter through another gate and walk to South Street; the route follows the street’s north–south axis, while transport arrangements for the four city gates are handled separately.
Outside vehicles are restricted from the ancient city and should be left near a gate. Parking areas are available near the visitor centre, Small South Gate and other gates, usually for about CNY 10 per session. After parking, walk in through South Gate and return to the agreed gate when you finish.
Continue along the street
South Street ends near the East and West Street intersection by City Tower. West Street branches off to the west, Yamen Street leads to the County Yamen, and North Street continues north before eventually reaching Gongji Gate (North Gate). Use the specific attraction or street name as your navigation target rather than entering only “Pingyao Ancient City.”
The public street and the entrances to the compounds may not share the same doorway. At Rishengchang, Xietongqing or another ticketed stop, follow the signs for the entrance, ticket check and open areas. Shopfronts and attraction entrances can be different, so use the building number and on-site directions.
Know before you go
Morning and evening crowds
Before 8:00, South Street is suitable for photographs of City Tower and the street’s depth. After 20:00, the lit City Tower and archways are good subjects, while South Gate and the main street are more crowded during the day. If you want a street view from the wall, confirm the wall’s last-entry and clearing times separately; night photography does not extend access to the wall.
Keep a clear path for pedestrians when photographing from the street. Photograph shop interiors, courtyard exhibitions and residents’ living spaces only where the site allows it. For a low-angle view of the “Jingcheng Xuande” archway, check the lighting and passage conditions on the day rather than relying on a fixed lighting time.
Food, shopping and unsolicited offers
Restaurants on South Street can cost more than those in the side lanes, and one bowl of knife-cut noodles may cost up to CNY 30. Read the menu and prices before sitting down. When buying Pingyao beef, Tui Guang lacquerware or other local products, compare packaging, brand and price because quality varies between street vendors.
Tour guides, cart drivers or people offering “local recommendations” may approach visitors and lead them to shopping stops. If you do not plan to buy anything, politely decline. The commercial atmosphere is part of the street experience; for a quieter walk or a rest, turn into a side lane and choose a restaurant according to its hours that day.
