Where the theatre is
“See Pingyao Again” is performed at the See Pingyao Cultural Park outside Pingyao Ancient City’s South Gate, within walking distance of the city. Set “See Pingyao Again Theatre Ticket Centre” as the navigation target. The ancient city and South Gate are only directional references; the ticket centre and theatre entrance are separate from South Street, the County Yamen and the city wall.
The performance uses a promenade format. The audience stands and walks through several spaces before entering a seated area for the closing section. It lasts about 90 minutes, with no fixed seats during the first part, so companions should be comfortable standing and moving with the group.
Ticket price and reservations
Tickets cost CNY 238 per person. Children under 1.2 m enter free but do not receive a seat. The performance ticket is separate from the ancient-city pass; use the theatre ticket centre’s reservation and admission-check rules rather than treating free ancient-city entry or the pass as admission to the theatre.
Online reservations are required. In the peak season, booking 3–7 days ahead through the official “See Pingyao Again” WeChat account is recommended. Common performance times include 14:00, 16:00, 19:00 and 21:00, but the daily schedule, admission time and version of the performance may change; follow the day’s official notice.

What the promenade performance includes
The story follows Zhao Yishuo, a Pingyao draft-bank owner who spends his entire fortune to preserve the Wang family line. The audience moves with the actors and the group through different spaces. The main experience is the change of setting, collective movement and live sound and lighting, rather than sitting in one place for a conventional stage play from beginning to end.
Common sections include “The Escort Guards’ Bath,” “Welcoming the Escort Guards,” “Choosing a Wife,” “The Return of the Souls” and “Returning to the Ancestral Line.” The sections, order and presentation may change with the day’s version, so the scenes you see depend on the performance in progress.
Who it suits
Visitors who enjoy immersive theatre, Shanxi-merchant stories and performances built around movement can make this a separate afternoon or evening event within a Pingyao itinerary. Visitors who need to sit for long periods, have limited mobility or dislike crowded transitions should understand the standing and walking requirements before booking and check the theatre’s current accessibility information.
Photographers should treat the performance as a live experience. Keep cameras and selfie sticks within your own space and never extend them towards actors, visitors or passageways. The “Choosing a Wife” section may be uncomfortable for visitors sensitive to traditional marriage customs; knowing this in advance is enough without revealing the later plot.

The forward route
When the theatre is using the forward route, enter the hall and follow staff to the left. Start with “The Escort Guards’ Bath,” continue to the simulated old-city street for “Welcoming the Escort Guards,” then enter the Zhao residence for “Choosing a Wife.” Continue to “The Return of the Souls” and finish in the seated area with “Returning to the Ancestral Line.”
The forward route takes you from the opening to the conclusion, with standing and movement in the first part and seats only near the end. The pace, time in each space and access control may change. Follow staff instead of cutting across the group, and do not run, push or try to take a front position during a transition.
The reverse route
If reverse entry is allowed that day, follow the directions to the right after entering the hall. You may reach the seating area before the final scene and prioritise a seated view. This means giving up “The Escort Guards’ Bath” and the story order in the first half, so it suits visitors who care more about the visual effect of the final section and can accept an incomplete performance.
Whether the reverse route is open, how seating is arranged and whether the area before the final section is accessible depend on staff directions. Stay on the designated route. Where another visitor stands does not create a fixed seating rule, and the theatre’s management on the day takes priority over route suggestions.
Combining the performance with the rest of the day
Walk from the ancient city’s South Gate to the theatre ticket centre, collect or check your ticket and enter according to the performance time. The show lasts about 90 minutes. For a late performance such as 19:00 or 21:00, plan the walk and pick-up back to the ancient city, parking area or accommodation before the show begins.
Eat inside the ancient city before the performance, or look at places such as “Yujian Yimian” near the theatre. Menus, prices and opening status depend on the day. Walking back to the ancient city after the performance is an outside-theatre transfer and is not part of the 90-minute performance time.
Get there
Navigate to the ticket centre
Set “See Pingyao Again Theatre Ticket Centre” as the destination. It is in the cultural park outside South Gate. From inside the ancient city, walk out through South Gate. From outside transport, first identify the day’s ticket-centre and theatre directions, then enter according to the reservation details.
The performance ticket is checked within the theatre system, with South Gate serving only as a direction reference. Vehicles, ride-hailing cars and pedestrian drop-off points follow the day’s traffic organisation. Leave vehicles outside the ancient city and look for the ticket centre separately from the shops and courtyards on South Street.
Returning after the performance
The theatre outside South Gate is within walking distance of the ancient city. After the show, follow the route back to South Gate, then re-enter the city or continue to the parking area outside the gate. Crowds may concentrate after a late performance, so agree on a meeting point outside South Gate or at the car park rather than blocking the theatre exit.
If you are not returning to the ancient city, confirm whether your accommodation, car or shuttle point is near the theatre. Pingyao Station, Pingyao Ancient City Station and the temples outside the city each need separate transport plans; the walkable distance to the theatre does not solve those longer returns.
Know before you go
Times, admission and content can change
14:00, 16:00, 19:00 and 21:00 are common performance times, not a fixed daily schedule. Children’s admission rules, how early you may enter, the sequence and the presentation may all change. After booking, read the day’s notice and ticket instructions and enter as the theatre staff direct.
Descriptions of “The Return of the Souls” often refer to the souls of 232 escort guards, and the closing section may include a flour dance. The number, sets, actors and presentation can vary by version. Treat these as content references rather than requesting a fixed seat, actor or scene when buying a ticket.
Standing, transitions and photography
The first part requires standing and walking. Follow the group during transitions; do not run, push, hold a place, or walk against the flow. Wear comfortable shoes and keep personal items light. Visitors with limited mobility or who tire easily should assess whether they can complete the continuous transitions before booking.
Put away selfie sticks during the performance. Keep phones and cameras in front of you, do not hold them high in another visitor’s line of sight, and do not stop between actors and the audience to take photographs. Follow staff and venue signs for photography, video and flash; evacuation safety and the viewing order come first.
Content note and food
“Choosing a Wife” involves traditional marriage customs and gender relations, and some visitors may find the section uncomfortable. Knowing that in advance is enough; do not affect other people’s viewing with photography or commentary. Food is available outside the theatre or on South Street in the ancient city, including options such as “Yujian Yimian”; check the day’s opening status and dishes.
