Site, ticket and opening hours
Nan'ao General's Office is at 3 Guangming Road in Shen'ao Town, at the centre of Nan'ao Ancient City; enter through the West Yamen Gate near Gguding Street. Adult entry is listed at CNY 12–13 and concession entry at CNY 7, with free entry for children below 1.2 m and visitors over 70; no reservation is needed, and reference hours are 08:00–17:30 with last entry at 17:00.
How much time to allow
Allow about 30 minutes for the recruitment banyan, old cannon, main hall and General’s Well, or around two hours when adding the ancient-city wall, City God Temple, Jufu Ancient Nunnery, Guandi Temple and a meal in Shen'ao. It suits visitors interested in Ming-Qing coastal defence, Zheng Chenggong and freshwater resources on an island.

30 minutes: General’s Office core route
Enter from the West Yamen Gate and see the general-statue wall, recruitment banyan, Zheng Chenggong statue, training stone, old cannon, main hall and General’s Well in sequence. When time is short, prioritise the old banyan, cannon, training stone and the coastal-defence displays inside.
Around 2 hours: Shen'ao Ancient City route
After the office, walk to the Nan'ao Ancient City wall, City God Temple, Jufu Ancient Nunnery, Guandi Temple and Macao Well, then eat in Shen'ao Town. Indoor and outdoor points alternate well in the softer 09:00–11:00 or 16:00–17:00 light.
Eastern-island combined route
Travel from Changshanwei, Qian'ao Bay, Sancong Cliff, Qing'ao Bay and the Natural Gate towards Shen'ao Town, then use the General’s Office and a meal in Houzhai as the later part of the day. If Jinyin Island or Song Well is also included, shorten the bay stops so you do not arrive after the office’s last entry.
Build your day
Read the coastal-defence and recruitment story first
The old banyan outside is associated with Zheng Chenggong’s recruitment, while the gate’s right side has a cast-iron cannon made in 1840 and weighing roughly four tonnes; the training stone and General’s Well explain military selection and the site choice. The central axis reflects the historic Fujian-Guangdong boundary arrangement, so read the boundary marker, main hall and displays together.
Then walk the ancient city and eat in town
Leave the office for the ancient city wall and temples, then eat in Shen'ao Town or continue to Song Well and Jinyin Island according to the time. Do not treat high-priced dried seafood outside the gate as a required shopping stop; compare prices and confirm the return transport first.
Get there
Bus, driving and parking
Route 602 reaches Shen'ao Town, followed by a walk, but return services are infrequent; nearby driving parking is listed at CNY 15 per visit and spaces tighten on holidays. The office is around 10 minutes by car from Qing'ao Bay and around 15 minutes from Houzhai Town, and e-bikes or a driver can also connect island stops.
Entrance and walking in town
The West Yamen Gate near Gguding Street is the clearest first entry point, and the wall and temples can be linked on foot. If driving into Shen'ao Town, park before walking rather than stopping in narrow streets to look for an entrance.
Know before you go
Tickets, crowds and interpretation
The low ticket price includes displays on coastal defence and past generals, so a guide or audio explanation can help visitors who want the historical sequence. Weekdays and later afternoons are quieter; weekend and holiday tour groups are commonly concentrated in the morning, so schedule entry first.
Spending and onward route
Confirm prices for parking, local products and seafood, and decline extra services presented as ticket handling or shortcuts. The General’s Office is a cultural stop in Shen'ao Town, not a substitute for the separate visiting time needed at Qing'ao Bay, Song Well or Jinyin Island.
