Tower and square
The Natural Gate is in Qing'ao Bay’s North Tropic of Cancer Square and is the eleventh North Tropic of Cancer marker tower. Enter from the square’s main gate or walk from Qing'ao Bay beach; the square is free, needs no reservation and is open all day, with 05:30–07:30 suited to sunrise and 14:00–18:00 to the tower, bay and portrait light.
How much time to allow
The tower, 23.5°N marker wall and beach take about an hour, or 2–3 hours when paired with Qing'ao Bay on a first visit. At noon on the summer solstice, the site can show the no-shadow phenomenon, but it is intensely exposed and should not be treated as the normal best time for photographs.

Around 1 hour: geography marker and beach
Enter through the square’s main gate, see the Natural Gate, the 23.5°N marker wall and the “I Love Nan'ao” road sign, then continue to Qing'ao Bay for a short wade. When time is limited, do not repeatedly queue at the square; keep time for the beach and onward transport.
Two days: sunrise and the eastern route
On day one, continue from Changshanwei, Qian'ao Bay and Sancong Cliff lighthouses to the Natural Gate for evening; return to the square and Qing'ao Bay for sunrise on day two, then move to Windmill Mountain or Zoumapu Village. This is steadier than repeatedly driving to the far east on the same day.
Family shallow-water route
Put the Natural Gate, Qing'ao Bay’s shallows, Haiquan Bay and Zhuxiduwan on one short-distance route. With children, parking, water, sun protection and return transport take priority over photographs.

Start with the architecture and geography
The Natural Gate combines a gate-shaped structure with a spherical top, and the square includes Tropic of Cancer information and photo points; see its proportions and bay background before crowds build. On the summer solstice at noon, use on-site information to observe the shadow phenomenon, but do not remain under intense sun for long.
Continue to Qing'ao Bay
The crescent beach, windbreak woodland and coastal rest stops connect directly from the square; light after 16:00 is better for people and sea views. If you continue to lighthouses or mountain roads, settle your parking and evening route before leaving the far east rather than rushing later.

Bus, driving and parking
After crossing Nan'ao Bridge, drive to the Natural Gate or Qing'ao Bay Jinjun car park, where nearby parking is listed at CNY 10–30 per visit; bus 161 or 105 from Shantou Railway Station reaches Qing'ao Bay in a listed two hours for CNY 15. Holiday parking is tight, so park legally first and walk into the square.
Short-distance island travel
Nearby shared e-bikes are listed at CNY 35 for two hours and suit short trips between bay stops; a full island circuit needs a full-day vehicle, driver or self-drive. Do not stop an e-bike on the island road for photos, and check braking and battery before a mountain-road segment.
Know before you go
Sun, queues and photography
The square is open and unshaded, so bring high-factor sun protection, a hat, sunglasses and insect repellent; clear sunrise or 16:00–18:00 is usually better for photographs than midday. Summer and holiday queues are common, so use designated photography positions and do not cross barriers or block passages for a view.
Spending and eastern-island planning
Parking and food charges vary, so confirm them before buying; do not leave meals and seafood purchases for the most crowded bay simply because of a popular recommendation. Stay in Qing'ao Bay for sunrise convenience, or in Houzhai Town for easier supplies and more restaurants.
