Plan at a glance

Mountain scale and time

Nanling National Forest Park is in Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County. It is a large, high-mountain forest area with scattered sights, so allow 1–2 days. The park is open 08:00–17:00, with entry ending at 16:00. First-time visitors should not treat it as a quick half-day stop from central Shaoguan.

The reference adult ticket price is about CNY 80, and the sightseeing bus is about CNY 30–50. The park contains different zones, including Xiaohuang Mountain, the waterfall group, and Waterside Valley. Shikengkong, the primeval forest, and deeper hikes are much more demanding than Waterside Valley, so plan them as separate routes.

Season and conditions

Mountain temperatures may be 5–10°C lower than in the city, and conditions change quickly. Cloud seas, rime, snow and ice, and summit scenery depend on the season and the day's weather and are not fixed products. Supplies, signal, and night transport are limited, so complete the route during daylight.

Choose your visit

High-mountain forest ecology

Nanling is mainly about high-elevation forests, unusual pines and rocks, old trees, and changing mountain ecology. It suits visitors who want to give a full day or two to nature observation. This is not a small sight you can finish near the gate; the distances between zones and the roads themselves are part of the trip.

Waterside Valley and waterfalls

Waterside Valley is for narrow gorges, clear pools, and waterfalls. Xiaohuang Mountain is for unusual pines and rocks, while the waterfall group includes Peacock Waterfall and Kilometer Waterfall. The three types of scenery involve different walking and transport arrangements, so first decide whether water, forest, or mountain views matter most.

Shikengkong and seasonal conditions

Shikengkong, cloud seas, azaleas, rime, and snow and ice are higher-intensity experiences that depend heavily on weather. They suit visitors with hiking experience who can accept changing conditions. Families and low-effort visitors do not need to give up Waterside Valley and the waterfall group just to reach the highest peak.

Build your day

Leisure route

Follow “Visitor Center → Waterside Valley → plank path → secluded gorge → clear pool → waterfall → return.” Waterside Valley is a stable main route for the first day. If the weather worsens in the afternoon, prioritize the return rather than pushing deeper to add another waterfall stop.

Highlights route

Put Xiaohuang Mountain's unusual pines and rocks in the first section, then take a vehicle or drive to the waterfall group for Peacock Waterfall and Kilometer Waterfall. Each zone needs time for transfers, parking, and a short rest. The separate zones cannot be compressed into one continuous walk.

Deeper hiking

The Shikengkong and primeval-forest routes require an earlier start and advance confirmation of roads, opening conditions, and accommodation. There is no stable food or lodging at the summit. Camping and protection-station accommodation require your own equipment or advance arrangements; do not expect to find a room at the top.

Get there

Driving

Driving from the Pearl River Delta takes about 3–4 hours. Leave the Beijing–Zhuhai Expressway at the Daqiao or Nanling exit, then drive about 10 km to the Visitor Center. The final mountain road has many bends and narrow sections. Fill up in Ruyuan County or Datang Town before entering the mountains, and avoid driving at night.

High-speed rail and buses

After arriving at Shaoguan Station by high-speed rail, go to Xihe Bus Station for the Nanling shuttle minibus. As a reference, there are about two services a day and the ride takes about 2 hours. You can also go to Ruyuan and transfer. Public transport is limited, so driving or hiring a car is easier when visiting several zones.

Know before you go

Weather and equipment

Mountain weather changes quickly. Bring a thick jacket, rain gear, shoes with good grip, and an offline map. Do not continue hiking in torrential rain, icy conditions, or low visibility. Whether you see rime, frost, snow, or cloud seas depends on that day's weather.

Supplies and timing

Supplies in the park are limited and expensive, so bring water, dry food, and snacks. There is no stable food or lodging at the summit. Entry ends at 16:00; start the main route around 09:00 or at least before 14:00. The last sightseeing bus cannot be used to extend the visit.

Conservation and nearby combinations

Nanling can be combined with Guangdong Grand Canyon, Yunmen Temple, and Nanshui Lake, but the mountain roads make the driving distances significant. Plan the combination around actual travel time. Do not enter unopened or unconfirmed mountain roads, forest paths, or core areas independently.
