Plan at a glance

Location and main focus

Suizhou Museum is at 98 Leigudun Avenue in Suizhou, beside the Second Bridge, with its main entrance facing a large plaza. It is a National First-Class Museum; after its 2025 refresh, six themed exhibitions present the history of Zeng, bell-and-music culture, the ancient E State, and Suizhou's regional heritage.

Admission is free, but real-name reservations are currently required. The two core exhibitions take about 1.5–2 hours; adding the other themed exhibitions calls for about 3–4 hours. Use the plaza at the main entrance as your reference point for entering and leaving.

Opening and entry

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00, with entry stopping at 16:00. It is closed on Mondays, and holiday arrangements are announced separately. Plan to arrive before 16:00 and check the day's notice for any changes.

Zeng history and bell displays

Bimei Handongguo (《彼美汉东国——曾国历史文化展》) and Zhongming Huanyu (《钟鸣寰宇——曾国编钟与礼乐文明展》) are the main starting points. The first focuses on Zeng history, while the second uses bells and related objects to explain the region's ritual-music tradition.

The bells on display here come from other periods or tombs; they are not the genuine bells from the Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng. The museum is the place to follow the historical development and regional ritual system, while the tomb site is a separate archaeological experience.

The ancient E State and visitor fit

Xunzhao Xiaoshi de Gu E Guo (《寻找消失的古鄂国》) focuses on bronze objects including E Hou Si Qi (噩侯四器), the four artifacts associated with the Marquis of E. A longer visit can add Zhangji Ronglu (《杖戟戎路——随州出土曾国兵器与车马器》), Chuanzang Mingyue Hui (《川藏明月辉——随州出土曾国玉器》), and Yandi Shennong Guli Huaren Yezu Shengdi (《炎帝神农故里 华人谒祖圣地》). The museum suits bronze-artifact enthusiasts, visitors on a deeper history trip, and people who prefer a quiet indoor visit.

Build your day

1.5–2 hours: core route

Enter through the main entrance and start with Bimei Handongguo, continue to Zhongming Huanyu, then visit Xunzhao Xiaoshi de Gu E Guo and E Hou Si Qi before returning to the main plaza through the exit.

This order puts Zeng history, ritual-music displays, and ancient E-State objects on one short route. With limited time, choose exhibitions by theme; the bell-and-dance performance is optional. You can eat or explore the nearby streets after leaving the museum.

3–4 hours: themed highlights route

Start with the two core exhibitions, then add the weapons and chariots, ancient E State, jade, and Shennong-themed exhibitions that are open that day. Allocate 3–4 hours according to the day's exhibition access and your interests, rather than trying to rush through every display.

After the themed exhibitions, return to the main plaza through the exit. If a suitable bell-and-dance session is available, use it as an optional addition midway through or near the end of the visit. Treat the performance and exhibition visit as separate parts of the plan, and allow extra time for food or Caodianzi Street after leaving.

Get there

From the railway stations

Suizhou Railway Station is about 4–5 km from the museum; a taxi usually costs about CNY 10–15. Suizhou South Railway Station is about 8–9 km away; Bus 10 can go directly to the museum, or a taxi takes about 20 minutes.

Suizhou has no metro. After arriving, enter through the main gate facing the plaza, complete the real-name reservation and identity check, and then begin the core exhibition route.

Driving and parking

Parking at the museum is limited, and the surrounding roads can be congested during holidays. Parking may be available in the Suizhou Labour and Employment Administration area north of the museum or in nearby government and public-institution compounds, but use only spaces marked as available that day.

Know before you go

Entry and bell-and-dance sessions

The museum is free, but real-name reservations are currently required. Before travelling, check the museum's official website or WeChat account for the reservation process. Visitors from overseas should bring the original passport and confirm in advance whether the reservation system supports passports and how on-site verification works.

Bell-and-dance sessions commonly take place at 10:30 and 15:30, but whether a session runs, its price, and the on-site ticket process follow the day's museum notice. If you want to attend, confirm the session first and then arrange the exhibition sequence around it.

Food and combining nearby visits

The core route still takes about 1.5–2 hours; a 3–4-hour themed visit works better if you eat after leaving. Caodianzi Street (草甸子街) is about 950 m from the museum, and options include local Guaizi Fan (拐子饭), Suizhou beef noodles, and snacks along the street.

Suizhou Museum covers Zeng history and regional exhibitions. Yan Emperor Cultural Tourism Area is a separate commemorative cultural attraction, while Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng at 44 Leigudun Avenue is the archaeological site where the tomb was found. Plan them separately, with separate routes and entry arrangements.
