Ticket, guide and simulated mine
China Coal Museum is at 2 West Yingze Street, Wanbolin District, Taiyuan, and uses one main entrance. An adult ticket costs CNY 60. Students and visitors aged 60–70 pay half price. Children under 1.2 metres, visitors over 70, military personnel and visitors with disabilities enter free according to the applicable documents. The ticket includes access to the ground galleries, 4D cinema and simulated mine. The required safety guide service costs extra: CNY 50 for groups of up to five, plus CNY 10 for each additional person, with no more than 15 people per group.
Make a real-name reservation through the “China Coal Museum” WeChat account, or buy a paper ticket at the on-site counter. The museum is open from 9:00 to 17:00, with ticket sales ending at 16:30; it is open on Mondays year-round. Entry to the simulated mine must be led by a safety guide. The final group's meeting time changes with the day's guiding schedule, so ask for the meeting point and available time slots immediately after buying the ticket.
How much time to allow
Allow 1.5–2 hours for the ground galleries, 4D cinema and simulated mine. Allow 3–4 hours if you also visit the coal-industry displays and the Shanxi Ancient Mural Museum beside the exit. The simulated mine is kept at about 15°C and is very dark, so the visit moves more slowly than an ordinary museum tour.

Ground-floor education and 4D cinema
The ground galleries explain how coal formed, its classification and distribution, and its relationship with human life. Use them first to establish the background. The 4D motion theatre shows The Formation of Coal, with moving seats and environmental effects. Film times and same-day operation may change, so look at the schedule before deciding how to fit the galleries and mine visit together.
The simulated mine
The simulated mine is the museum's central experience. Visitors wear a miner's helmet and headlamp, then take a lift and a small mine train into simulated tunnels to see a coal face and mining methods from different periods. The tunnel floor is uneven and some sections slope. Stay with the group throughout, and follow the tour's photography and site-management instructions.
The mural museum beside the exit
After leaving the simulated mine, a small Shanxi Ancient Mural Museum is beside the exit. It contains architectural models and reproductions of Northern Qi murals. These are reproductions, distinct from the original Xu Xianxiu Tomb site and mural collection at the Taiyuan Northern Qi Mural Museum. If time is limited, complete the underground visit first and then decide whether to add the mural museum.

The 1.5–2-hour short route
After entering through the main gate, exchange your reservation for a paper ticket, then purchase the required safety guide service and confirm the meeting point, 4D screening and final simulated-mine group time. Follow the guide through the ground galleries, take the lift into the simulated mine, and see the mine train and coal face before leaving through the mine exit. A guide is required for the underground visit; visitors cannot enter independently.
The 3–4-hour complete route
Start with the ground-floor coal introduction, enter the simulated mine, and then visit the Shanxi Ancient Mural Museum beside the exit. If a suitable 4D screening is available, place it between the ground galleries and the underground section. If its timing conflicts with the guided group, follow the guide's meeting time first so that you do not miss underground admission.
Stamina and return
The underground floor is uneven and some sections slope. The complete route also involves walking between the ground galleries and museum areas. Leave through the main entrance after the visit; public transport is usually more reliable than trying to park in congested streets. If you only want the ground galleries and 4D cinema, say so when buying the ticket rather than forcing the underground visit into a short schedule.
Get there
Metro and bus
Take Metro Line 1 to Yingze Bridge West Station, Exit C, then walk about 300 metres to the museum. You can also get off at Xiayuan Station and walk about eight minutes. Bus 1 or 38 stops at Yingze Bridge West; follow the signs from the stop to the shared main entrance.
Driving and nearby options
Driving can mean limited on-site spaces and congestion along West Yingze Street. Shanxi Museum and Shanxi Natural History Museum are each about a 15-minute walk away. If you continue to either one, use that museum's own reservation, closure and entrance rules.
Know before you go
Children and discomfort in enclosed spaces
The simulated mine is completely dark apart from headlamps and is kept at about 15°C, so visitors with claustrophobia should consider skipping it. Children under 1.5 metres may not be able to wear the safety helmet, and entry is not recommended for children under five. Once inside, follow the safety guide's age and height instructions.
Clothing, photography and food
Wear comfortable shoes with good grip and bring a light layer in summer. Mining equipment, mine trains and specimen walls can be photographed, but stay within the guide's route and the museum's photography rules. Outside the museum, possible meal stops include Xidele Restaurant, the snack street by the opposite residential area and Linxiangzhai; opening arrangements follow the day.
