Free admission still requires a real-name reservation
Shanxi Museum is at 13, north section of Binhe West Road, Wanbolin District, Taiyuan. Admission is free. Make a real-name reservation through the “Shanxi Museum” WeChat account; on ordinary days, reservations can be made up to three days ahead. For holidays, try to reserve at 20:00 three days in advance, and check for remaining same-day places at 8:00 on the morning of your visit. Reservation rules and release times can change, so check again before travelling.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:00. It is closed on Mondays except public holidays. Exhibitions are spread over four floors. Allow 1–1.5 hours for a quick route or 3–4 hours for a complete visit; add extra time if you plan to join a guided tour or take photographs.
East Gate and West Gate
Individual visitors often enter through the East Gate, which has stairs. The West Gate is closer to the metro and requires less walking, making it more convenient for public-transport users and visitors with luggage. The South Gate is mainly used as the exit for the complete route. After a reservation succeeds, use the entrance open for your reservation that day; the East and West Gates serve different purposes.

Jin bronzes on the second floor
“Cradle of Civilization”, “Xia and Shang Traces” and “Hegemony of Jin” on the second floor form the core for a first visit. The Jin Hou Bird Zun inspired the museum emblem; the Owl Zun is easy to recognise by its shape, and the Dragon-shaped Gong is a Shang-dynasty bronze. The jade pendant set of the wife of the Marquis of Jin consists of 204 pieces of jade and agate linked together into a 1.58-metre-long work, and is worth seeing on the same floor.
Buddhism and cultural exchange on the third floor
“Melting Pot of Peoples” and “Buddhist Legacies” on the third floor suit visitors interested in the Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties, the Silk Road and Buddhist art. The Central Asian and Persian-style reliefs on the stone sarcophagus from the Yu Hong Tomb are a named highlight. The giant Buddha head at the entrance to “Buddhist Legacies” works well for a side or upward photograph, subject to the museum's photography notices.
Ancient architecture on the fourth floor
“Timber and Earth Splendour” on the fourth floor introduces Shanxi's traditional architecture. Depending on your time and interests, add “Porcelain Garden”, “Jade in China” and the other galleries. Families can start with the large bronzes on the second floor, then choose one gallery on the first or third floor. History-focused visitors can walk all four floors, while keeping the second- and third-floor highlights as the priority.

Build your day
The 1–1.5-hour quick route
Enter through the East or West Gate specified by your reservation and go directly to the second floor. Follow “Cradle of Civilization” → “Xia and Shang Traces” → “Hegemony of Jin”, focusing on the Jin Hou Bird Zun, Owl Zun, Dragon-shaped Gong and the jade pendant set of the wife of the Marquis of Jin. If time is short, finish on the second floor and leave towards the museum shop on the first floor; this route does not include the other floors.
The 3–4-hour complete route
Start on the second floor to establish a timeline of Shanxi history, then continue to “Melting Pot of Peoples” and “Buddhist Legacies” on the third floor, followed by “Timber and Earth Splendour” on the fourth floor. Use the remaining time for the porcelain or jade galleries according to your interests. Return to the first-floor museum shop and leave through the South Gate; this order reduces repeated stair and lift trips and gives the second and third floors more breathing room.
Avoiding the busiest periods and finding a guide
Galleries may be crowded on weekends and during school holidays. Weekdays or after 15:00 are often calmer; another option is to start on the fourth floor and work downward to avoid tour groups. Paid official guided tours and free volunteer-guided tours may change by time and day. Reference slots include about 9:30, 10:30, 14:30 and 15:30; ask at the volunteer service desk before adjusting the route.
Get there
Metro and ride-hailing
Take Metro Line 1 to Taiyuan University of Technology Station, Exit C, then walk north for about 10 minutes to the West Gate. For ride-hailing, use “Shanxi Museum West Gate” or “Shanxi Museum East Gate”. The West Gate has the shorter walk and the East Gate is commonly used by individual visitors; check the entrance shown on your reservation before getting out.
Driving
Drivers can navigate to “Shanxi Museum North Gate”. There are a few free spaces outside the North Gate, but they fill quickly on weekends and holidays. Driving is not the preferred option. If no space is available at the North Gate, use a nearby car park and walk rather than repeatedly circling the congested East Gate approach.

Walking, stamina and nearby food
Four floors of galleries and repeated changes of level require a fair amount of walking, so wear comfortable shoes. Xinghuatang nearby is an option for dishes such as yellow-millet cold cake and guoyourou. Xiangyang Yang Soup, about a 10-minute walk away, is suitable for a simpler meal; individual shop opening arrangements follow the day.
