The East Gate is the most direct approach
The garden is at the junction of Jinyang Avenue and Taigu Road. The East Gate is the main entrance and is closest to the Starry Sky Elevator and the three major conservatories; the West Gate is farther from the main landscape area. Peak-season tickets cost CNY 50 per person from April 1 to October 31, and off-season tickets cost CNY 30. Children aged 6–18 and students pay half price. Visitors aged 60 or above, children under 6 or no taller than 1.2 metres, and other eligible visitors enter free with the required documents.
Make a real-name reservation through the “Taiyuan Botanical Garden” WeChat account and enter by scanning an ID card or QR code. In peak season, the garden opens at 9:00, stops admitting visitors at 19:00 and closes at 20:00. In the off-season, it opens at 9:00, stops admitting visitors at 17:00 and closes at 18:00. The conservatories usually stop admission 1–2 hours before the garden closes, so check the day's conservatory notice before entering.
How much time to allow
Allow 2–3 hours for the Starry Sky Elevator and three conservatories. Add the lake area, Observation Tower, sunset and evening scenery for a 4–5-hour visit. Put the conservatories first, then outdoor areas and illuminated photography; do not miss an earlier conservatory last-admission time while waiting for the evening view.

The three major conservatories
The Tropical Rainforest House has a waterfall and an elevated walkway, with a humid atmosphere that reveals the layers of tropical planting. The Desert Plant House focuses on giant cacti and the light beneath its dome. The Seasonal Flower House arranges different themed flower displays at different times. These three conservatories form the main indoor section, so visiting them consecutively reduces unnecessary outdoor backtracking.
The Starry Sky Elevator and Observation Tower
The Starry Sky Elevator is one of the garden's signature buildings. In daylight, photograph its architectural lines; after the lights come on, it becomes an evening-scene subject. The Observation Tower provides a high viewpoint over the whole garden. From across the lake, you can frame the Starry Sky Elevator and conservatories together, while the lake area with black swans works well after the conservatory visit.
Who will enjoy it
Families, visitors who like architecture and plants, and anyone who wants to combine indoor viewing with late-afternoon photography can make this a half-day stop. The grounds are extensive, so flat, comfortable shoes are better than hard-soled footwear. Food options inside the garden are limited; bring water if you plan to stay for several hours.
Build your day
The 2–3-hour short route
Enter through the East Gate and go first to the Starry Sky Elevator, then visit the Tropical Rainforest House, Desert Plant House and Seasonal Flower House in that order. Finish at the lake or Observation Tower for an outdoor view. If conservatory admission is about to end, put all three conservatories first and use the remaining time for the elevator and photographs.
The 4–5-hour sunset and evening route
Enter in the afternoon. From the East Gate, complete the Starry Sky Elevator and three conservatories before sunset, then visit the lake and black swans and climb the Observation Tower for a view over the garden. Once it gets dark, return to the far side of the lake to photograph the Starry Sky Elevator and conservatory lights. Leave by the 20:00 closing time at the latest; do not remain after closing for night photography.
The return rhythm
Traffic near the entrance can become congested at the end of the day, and ride-hailing waits may lengthen. Drivers should use the East Gate parking lot as the return target. If you are taking a car, call it before finishing your photography and keep a bus departure as a backup rather than relying on a last-minute car after the gates close.

Bus and ride-hailing
Take bus 308, 310, 804 or 856 to the “Jinyang Avenue–Tangcheng Highway” stop, then walk about five minutes to the East Gate. For ride-hailing, set “Taiyuan Botanical Garden East Gate” as the destination. The West Gate is also an entrance, but it is farther from the main conservatories and is not the default choice for a first visit.
Driving
Drivers should navigate to “Taiyuan Botanical Garden East Gate Parking Lot”, which is usually more convenient for the conservatory area than the West Gate. Parking is CNY 10 per visit for petrol or diesel cars and free for EVs. Parking charges, available spaces and the East Gate traffic arrangement may change with the day's operation, so check the parking notice before entering.
Know before you go
Conservatories, lighting and crowds
The Starry Sky Elevator may have a queue on holidays, so an off-peak arrival helps. Conservatories usually stop admission before the garden closes; a 19:00 last admission and 20:00 closing time do not mean that the conservatories remain open until the final minute. Lighting, evening scenery and visitor flow follow the day's arrangement.
Weather, shoes and food
Outdoor paths and the lakeside may be slippery after rain, and the Observation Tower or some outdoor sections may be affected by weather. Walking distances inside the garden are long, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Jinzhaicai near Jinci or Yaodong Renjia are possible meal stops; food inside the botanical garden is limited and relatively expensive, and restaurant opening hours need to be checked on site.
