Taiyuan Ancient County Town is at 19 Fengcheng East Street in Jinyuan District. Entry to the town streets is free, with no reservation required; register on site with an ID card or other valid identification. The city wall and the filming base for the movie Full River Red each charge CNY 20. The county office, Confucian Temple and Jinyang Ancient City Archaeological Museum are free, while each site's opening and ticket arrangements follow the day's notice.
The town is open from 9:30 to 22:00. Core venues such as the county office and Confucian Temple often close around 17:00, while the night scenery can continue until 22:00. A practical rhythm is to see the buildings and exhibition spaces in daylight, climb the wall around sunset, then return to the main street after dark. Lanterns, steel-flower performances, drones and light displays are festival or date-specific arrangements rather than daily guaranteed programmes.
Which entrance to use
The East Gate suits visitors arriving on foot and is also the classic entrance for a city-wall visit. The North Gate, also called Daxia Gate, is more convenient for drivers. The town has gates on all four sides; when cars are allowed to enter, the usual one-way arrangement is North Gate in and South Gate out, travelling counterclockwise.

The county office, Confucian Temple and City Tower
The City Tower stands at the centre of the town's cross-shaped main street and is the easiest landmark for orienting yourself. The county office and Confucian Temple are best visited during the day. Jinyuan Confucian Temple is a nationally protected heritage site, and its red walls and courtyards are good photography subjects. Together, these stops offer an experience of the reconstructed town's architecture and street layout.
City walls, sunset and night scenery
The city wall requires a separate ticket. The section from the East Gate to the North Gate is useful around sunset, when you can look across the grey-brick roofs and the town's layout. The wall is also a good place to photograph the sunset and wait for the streets to light up. City Tower lighting, lanterns and performances depend on the day's programme and are not fixed parts of the admission ticket.

Visitors interested in traditional architecture, photography and northern Chinese townscapes at night can make this a half-day or late-afternoon stop. Families can divide the county office, Confucian Temple and city wall into separate visits. Whether the sightseeing vehicle operates, and what it costs, follows the day's arrangement. Build your day
The 1.5–2-hour short route
Enter through the East Gate, follow the main street to the City Tower, then visit the county office and Confucian Temple before leaving through the most convenient gate. If time is limited, skip the wall and keep the visit on foot. To reduce long walks, ask on site whether the sightseeing vehicle is operating and how tickets are sold that day.
The 3–4-hour sunset and night route
Enter through the East Gate at around 16:00. Visit the county office and Confucian Temple first, then walk north to the Jinyang Ancient City Archaeological Museum. After the museum, return to the town's main street and continue to an open city-wall entrance for sunset and a view over the town. Once night falls, return to the City Tower and main street; when the lights or any temporary performance ends, leave through the South or North Gate.
Driving route and return
Drivers should navigate to “Taiyuan Ancient County Town North Gate (Daxia Gate)”. Traffic arrangements may change on the day; if vehicles are allowed inside, follow the North-Gate-in, South-Gate-out direction. If you arrive by ride-hailing at the East Gate, call another car to the East or South Gate when leaving. Traffic is heavier on weekends and holidays, so set the actual entry and exit gate as the navigation target instead of turning around at the South Gate.

Bus and walking
From central Taiyuan, take bus 804, 856 or another service to the “Jinyuan” stop, then walk about 400 metres to the East Gate. For ride-hailing, set “Taiyuan Ancient County Town East Gate” as the destination. Drivers should use “Taiyuan Ancient County Town North Gate (Daxia Gate)” instead; the two entrances serve different traffic arrangements.
Pairing it with Jinci
Taiyuan Ancient County Town is about 6 km from Jinci, roughly a 15-minute drive, so the two can be combined in one day. They have separate entrances and ticket rules: Jinci Museum's checkpoint, reservation and ticket do not apply to the ancient town. If you continue from the town to the outer Jinyang archaeological site, plan for that site's separate entrance as well.
Know before you go
Crowds, walking and food
The town is large, and the city wall adds substantial walking to the street visit, so wear comfortable shoes. There are many snack shops, but queues, flavour and value at full-meal restaurants or popular stalls vary by time of day. Fried glutinous-rice balls and beef meatballs are options to try in small portions; an individual shop's opening status is not a permanent town facility.
Night programmes and photography
You can generally plan the town's night scenery until around 22:00, but the county office, Confucian Temple and archaeological museum may stop admitting visitors earlier. Lantern festivals, drone displays, fire-dragon and datiehua (molten-iron fireworks) performances, light shows and filming-base activities depend on the date, festival schedule and day's on-site arrangements. When photographing from the city wall, stay within open areas and behind the barriers; do not enter closed sections for a better view.
