Keep the paid museum and free park separate
Jinci Museum is in Jinci Town, Jinyuan District, Taiyuan, on the east side of the Jinci–Tianlongshan scenic area. The same area also contains the free Jinci Park. From the park gates around Xiangxi Gate or Yingxi Gate, it takes about 20–30 minutes on foot to reach the museum ticket checkpoint. Entering the park does not mean that you have entered the museum.
The museum ticket is CNY 80 per person in peak season, from April 1 to October 31, and CNY 65 in the off-season. Students pay half price, and visitors aged 60 or above enter free with valid identification. Real-name reservations are made through the WeChat account “China Jinci”. For holidays, booking one or two days ahead is sensible; remaining slots and documents accepted for free admission follow the reservation page's current-day information.
How much time to allow
In peak season, the museum is open from 8:30 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:30. In the off-season, it is open from 8:30 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the central axis highlights, or 2.5–3 hours if you also visit the north and south side areas and the Shrine of Tang Shuyu.

The Three Treasures on the central axis
For a first visit, follow the central axis through the Xian Hall, Fish Pond and Flying Beam, and the Hall of the Holy Mother. The Xian Hall is a Jin-dynasty timber building assembled with a full mortise-and-tenon structure. The Fish Pond and Flying Beam is an early surviving cross-shaped bridge. The Hall of the Holy Mother is a Northern Song timber building with eight carved wooden dragon columns in front. Give these three stops enough time rather than treating them as a quick pass-through.
The Three Wonders and easy-to-miss details
The Hall of the Holy Mother contains 43 Song-dynasty maidservant sculptures, each with a different expression. Photography is allowed in the sculpture area, but flash is prohibited. From August 24, 2026 to October 26, 2027, a partial enclosure will cover the areas around five of the sculptures, so the visible viewing range may change. The Zhou cypress is nearly 3,000 years old; Nanlao Spring is the source of Jinshui (晋水), with a water temperature of 17°C. Near the entrance, the Shuijing Terrace combines a hall, terrace, tower and pavilion, while the Jinren Platform has four Northern Song iron figures.
What to photograph and where to linger
From 8:30 to 9:30, Shuijing Terrace is a good first photography stop, when the water reflections and the building's front elevation are easier to frame. From the Fish Pond and Flying Beam, you can include the Hall of the Holy Mother, the pond and the trees in one composition. After 16:00, visitor numbers may ease, making it a useful time for water and architectural details. You may photograph the sculptures in the Hall of the Holy Mother, but do not use flash, touch the objects or cross the barriers.
Build your day
The 1.5–2-hour central-axis route
Start at the museum ticket checkpoint and walk to Shuijing Terrace, Jinren Platform, Duiyue Archway, the Xian Hall, Fish Pond and Flying Beam, the Hall of the Holy Mother, the Zhou cypress and Nanlao Spring, then leave through the exit. The route follows the central axis and involves little backtracking. Do not reduce the Hall of the Holy Mother, Fish Pond and Flying Beam, and the Xian Hall to a hurried glance.
The 2.5–3-hour deeper route
Complete the same central-axis route first, then continue north to the Shrine of Tang Shuyu before returning to the exit. To reduce the long walk through the park, you can get off near Building 5 of the Jinci Hotel or around the South Gate and walk about 10–15 minutes along the hotel's internal road to the museum entrance. If you enter through a park gate, ask about the scenic-area electric shuttle and decide whether to use it; its fee and service frequency may change.
A same-day pairing and meal stop
Jinci Museum can be paired with Taiyuan Ancient County Town on the same day, but the two attractions have separate tickets and entrances, so travel time and parking need to be planned separately. Jinweizhai (晋味斋) at Jinci Hotel is a possible full-meal stop; its mixed hotpot and stir-fried millet are options, with a typical spend of about CNY 70–80 per person. Tongfu Wild Vegetable Dumplings near Jinci Park is suitable for a simpler meal, though quality and value are best judged for yourself.
Get there
Public transport and ride-hailing
From central Taiyuan, take bus 308, 804 or 856 to the “Jinci Park” stop, then walk through the park to the museum. Another option is Metro Line 2 to Xiqiao Station, followed by a bus or taxi. For a ride-hailing trip, set “Jinci Hotel” or “Jinci Museum” as the destination. If you choose the shorter approach via Jinci Hotel, confirm that the drop-off point connects to the hotel's internal road.
Driving and identifying the right entrance
Drivers can navigate to “Jinci Museum Parking Lot”, or park first at Jinci Hotel and walk. Reaching “Jinci Park” does not mean that you are at the museum ticket checkpoint, so visitors with older adults or children should include the 20–30-minute walk in their schedule.
Know before you go
Queues, guiding and photography
On holidays, arriving around opening time or after 16:00 can help avoid the busiest period. The official guide meeting point is beside Yingxi Gate, at the Tianlongshan Scenic Area Visitor Service Centre; on-site group tours may be available. Independent guides may also approach visitors around Xiangxi Gate, so check their price and what is included before agreeing. Photography is allowed for the sculptures in the Hall of the Holy Mother, but flash, touching the objects and crossing the barriers are not allowed.
Walking, weather and supplies
The distance from the park gates to the museum is long, and the museum itself involves continuous walking, so wear comfortable shoes with good grip. Restaurants and water stops around the scenic area are less concentrated than in the city centre, so carrying water is practical. Electric shuttles, guide locations and fees, parking, and reservation availability may change with the day's operation.
