Enter through the South Gate
Shanxi Merchants Museum is at 101 Fudong Street, Xinghualing District, Taiyuan. Visits are currently organised around the shared South Gate entrance. A ticket costs CNY 38 per person. Make a real-name reservation and purchase through the “Former Shanxi Governor's Mansion (Shanxi Merchants Museum)” WeChat mini-program or the “Shanxi Merchants Museum” official account.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 16:30 and closed on Mondays except public holidays. Visitor numbers may be lighter at opening time on weekdays or after 15:30. Guide sessions can change, so use the museum's current-day arrangement for reservation and timing.
How much time to allow
Allow 1.5–2 hours for the central axis and Meishan Bell Tower, or 3–4 hours to walk through both gardens and the central buildings. The courtyards are extensive and the complete route is mainly on foot; photography and a guided tour add to the time.

The central buildings
Yuanyi Hall and Zixing Hall are on the central axis and form the principal buildings of the former Governor's Mansion. Their architecture and interior decoration combine Chinese and Western elements. On a first visit, use them to understand the layout before deciding whether to explore both gardens. Guided tours mainly cover part of the central exhibition area.
East Garden and West Garden
East Garden was Yan Xishan's former residence, with Republican-era domestic scenes and architectural details that reward a slower visit. West Garden has pavilions, covered corridors and water, providing a garden section and a short rest in the middle of the city. The two gardens require separate walking, and guided tours of the central buildings do not cover their content.
Meishan Bell Tower and photography
Meishan Bell Tower stands on higher ground inside the compound and looks over the roofs of old Taiyuan. The red walls and yellow roof tiles in front of Yuanyi Hall suit architectural photographs; the lakeside corridor in West Garden offers reflections, while the moon gate in East Garden works for portraits. Around 10:00 and after 15:00, the light is often softer.
Build your day
The 1.5–2-hour short route
Enter through the South Gate, walk north along the central axis and visit Yuanyi Hall, Zixing Hall and the other key buildings. Then, if the tower is open for access that day, climb Meishan Bell Tower for a view over the compound before returning to the South Gate by the same general route. If your reservation or entry is late, prioritise the central buildings and, if open, the bell tower, and leave the gardens for another visit rather than crossing both wings close to closing time.
The 3–4-hour complete route
After entering, visit West Garden first, then East Garden, and return to the central axis for Yuanyi Hall, Zixing Hall and Meishan Bell Tower. Guided tours are commonly offered around 9:30 in the morning and 14:30 in the afternoon. You can explore the gardens independently first, then ask at the central service point about that day's guided-tour schedule; its time and coverage may change.
Returning and taking a nearby walk
Leave through the South Gate. Bell Tower Street, Food Street and the Liuxiang shopping area are about a 15-minute walk away. They form a separate open urban district; if you continue into the evening, follow the Liuxiang route. The museum's ticket, guiding and closing time do not extend to the street district.
Get there
Metro and taxi
Take Metro Line 2 to Fuxi Street Station, Exit A2, then walk about five minutes to the museum. For ride-hailing, use “Shanxi Merchants Museum” as the destination and enter through the South Gate. Bell Tower Street and Food Street are not museum drop-off entrances.
Weighing up driving
Parking inside the grounds is limited and Fudong Street can be congested. Public transport is usually more convenient because parking around the museum is limited. If you must drive, find an available car park first and then walk to the South Gate.
Know before you go
Guiding and the bell-tower climb
Guided tours are commonly offered around 9:30 each morning and 14:30 each afternoon, mainly covering part of the central buildings. Explore East Garden and West Garden independently. Ask at the service point on the day whether Meishan Bell Tower is open for climbing, whether a guided tour has formed a group and whether a fee applies. The presence of a bell tower does not guarantee that the top is open every day.
Shoes, stamps and food
The compound involves a good deal of walking, and a complete visit can easily exceed three hours, so wear comfortable shoes. The cultural-products shop may offer a free commemorative stamp. Nearby meal options include Xinghuatang or Lao Taiyuan Cuisine at the entrance to Bell Tower Street; restaurant opening, queues and per-person spending vary by date.
