Distinguish the outer site from the inner-city museum
The excavation area is outside the north wall of Taiyuan Ancient County Town, with access from beside the parking lot. It is free and does not require a reservation. The site is open from 9:00 to 17:00, with entry ending at 16:30. The Jinyang Ancient City Archaeological Museum is inside the county town, within Daxia Gate. It is also free; register on site with an ID. The museum is open from 9:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30, and is closed on Tuesdays except public holidays.
Both places reveal different evidence from the same ancient city, but their entrances, walking conditions and opening arrangements must be treated separately. The outer site consists mainly of excavation pits and gravel or earth paths outside the town wall. The museum is inside the town and can be paired with it on a walking route. The town's general free-street opening hours do not replace the museum's closing time.
How much time to allow
Allow 1.5–2 hours for the excavation area followed by a quick museum visit, or 3–4 hours for the site, museum and city-wall combination. Climbing the ancient town wall requires a separate CNY 20 ticket; it is a town attraction and is not part of the free admission to either the archaeological site or museum.

Excavation Pits 2 and 4
Pits 2 and 4 are the main features of the outer site. From the higher glass walkway, you can look down over the layout of Tang-dynasty palace remains, roads and waterworks. Column-base stones and foundations convey the scale of the city better than viewing a single object in isolation. The open area can change, and the archaeological paths and walkway are not suitable for flip-flops or trying to move a stroller quickly.
Reconstructions and excavated material in the museum
Inside the museum, look for a reconstruction of the white-marble sarcophagus from the Yu Hong Tomb, the “scissors-hand” maidservant image from the murals of the Tang-dynasty Guo Xing Tomb, and reproductions of the murals from the Northern Qi Xu Xianxiu Tomb. The last item is a reproduction. The old city and the modern city in one frame
The archaeological museum places the city's history and excavated objects alongside contemporary urban space. It works well as a way to establish the timeline before seeing the scale of the remains outdoors. The high walkway at Pit 2 is suitable for photographing the palace remains and the depth created by the column bases. The ancient town wall is a separate option for a late-afternoon panorama; its ticket and opening arrangements need to be checked separately.
Build your day
The 1.5–2-hour short route
If you are already in the ancient town, leave through the North Gate and enter the excavation area outside the wall. Focus on Pits 2 and 4 and the glass walkway. Then return to the town and walk to the archaeological museum inside Daxia Gate, following the indoor route to its key objects. If it is close to 16:30, confirm that the museum is still admitting visitors before setting out.
The 3–4-hour deeper route
Start at the outer excavation area, allowing about one hour for the gravel and earth paths and photography. Then return through the ancient town's North Gate and enter the archaeological museum inside Daxia Gate, allowing about 1–1.5 hours. If time permits, climb the town wall for sunset and leave through the South or North Gate. The wall, county office and Confucian Temple belong to the ancient town visit and do not share tickets with the archaeological venues.
Reduce backtracking between the two areas
Visitors on foot can approach the ancient town from the Jinyuan stop, enter through the East Gate, cross the town to the North Gate and reach the outer site, then return to the museum inside the town. Drivers can park at “Jinyang Ancient City National Archaeological Site Park Parking Lot”, handle the outer site first and then walk into the ancient town. Roads around the area are prone to congestion on weekends and holidays; if you also want the wall and night scenery, put the museum's 16:30 last-admission time first in the schedule.
Get there
Bus and ride-hailing
Take bus 804 or 905 to the “Jinyuan” stop and walk about 400 metres to Taiyuan Ancient County Town's East Gate, then continue north through the town. You can also continue on foot to the excavation area outside the North Gate. For ride-hailing, use either “Jinyang Ancient City Archaeological Museum” or “Jinyang Ancient City National Archaeological Site Park” as the destination, and confirm before getting out whether you need the inner-city museum or outer excavation area.
Driving
Navigate to “Jinyang Ancient City National Archaeological Site Park Parking Lot”; the reference parking charge is CNY 10 per visit. The lot is close to the outer site. If you want to start with the museum, you still need to enter the ancient town through Daxia Gate. Parking spaces and surrounding roads come under greater pressure during holidays, so calculate parking and the walking time to each entrance separately.
Know before you go
Shoes and weather
The archaeological park is large, and the excavation area mainly uses gravel and earth paths that become more slippery after rain. Wear shoes with good grip. Shade, food and drink supplies are limited outdoors, so bring water. The museum can provide an indoor section when the weather is unstable, but whether the excavation area is suitable to visit that day follows the on-site arrangement.
Food inside the ancient town
After the visit, you can eat inside the ancient town. Laojinyang Cuisine, the courtyard-style Haidilao, lamb shaomai and sweet tofu pudding are possible options. Shop opening, queues and dishes vary by day; these are refreshment options along the archaeological route, not facilities of the archaeological museum.
