The visit starts at the mountaintop
Tianlongshan Scenic Area is on Tianlongshan, about 36 km southwest of central Taiyuan in Jinyuan District. The main visit is Tianlongshan Grottoes Museum. The principal entrance is at the top of the mountain: first reach the scenic-area transfer point and take the shuttle. After travelling down the mountain road, you can leave near Guobao Huigui Hall (国宝回归馆) at the foot of the mountain. This direction determines how you return, so do not estimate the walk only from the grotto entrance.
The ticket is CNY 50 per person. Buy it through the “Jinci Tianlongshan” WeChat account with real-name information or purchase on site. Taiyuan Tourism Pass holders receive free admission under the day's rules. The area is open from 8:30 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30. The grottoes are closed for maintenance on Mondays except public holidays. Maintenance-day and shuttle arrangements may change, so check the scenic area's notice on the day of your visit.
How much time to allow
Allow 2–2.5 hours to take the scenic shuttle from the mountaintop down to Guobao Huigui Hall (国宝回归馆). Add the Liuzhiyu trail and Tianlong Waterfall for a 3–5-hour visit. The hall usually finishes receiving visitors at around 18:00, while the grottoes stop admitting visitors earlier, so complete the grottoes before deciding whether to continue towards Liuzhiyu.

Guobao Huigui Hall (国宝回归馆)
Guobao Huigui Hall (国宝回归馆) is the key stop on the lower section. It displays the head of the Buddha from Grotto 8 of the Sui dynasty, which returned to China after nearly a century overseas. It fits naturally into the latter half of a downhill route. The mountaintop grotto entrance and the hall near the foot of the mountain are separate.
Manshan Pavilion and the east and west grotto groups
Manshan Pavilion is Grotto 9 and a landmark on the mountain road. Inside is a seated Buddha about 11 metres high. The east and west grotto groups span the Eastern Wei, Northern Qi, Sui and Tang periods, making the continuous descent a good way to observe changes in sculptural style. Follow the on-site photography rules inside the grottoes.
The mountain road and photography
The scenic shuttle passes a three-level spiral viaduct with a vertical drop of about 350 metres. When travelling uphill, sitting on the left is usually better for the view; on the way down, the right side is more convenient. Take photographs from your seat and within the vehicle. The steps and open area opposite Manshan Pavilion work well for photographing the building and mountain, while the area near Guobao Huigui Hall (国宝回归馆) is a natural finishing point.
Build your day
The 2–2.5-hour easier route
First take the scenic shuttle to “Longmen Station” at the mountaintop. Enter there and visit Manshan Pavilion, the West Peak grotto group, the East Peak grotto group, Tianlong Temple at the foot of the mountain and Guobao Huigui Hall (国宝回归馆) in that order. Leave through the exit beside the hall, then use the day's shuttle arrangement for the return trip. Most of the grotto section is downhill, but visitors with sensitive knees should still slow down.
The 3–5-hour deeper route
Complete the grotto and exhibition route above, then continue downhill along the “Liuzhiyu” trail. The way includes streams, a wooden walkway and Tianlong Waterfall. Finally leave from the Liuzhiyu Visitor Centre, then walk or use a local village shuttle arrangement available on site to return to the parking area. The return distance and vehicles need to be checked on the day; do not rely only on finding a taxi after leaving.
Pairing it with Jinci
Tianlongshan is next to Jinci and the two can be visited on the same day. Confirm Tianlongshan's shuttle and last-admission times before adding Jinci to the schedule. Jinci Museum's checkpoint, reservation, parking and walk through the park are separate parts of the plan. The Tianlongshan ticket does not include Jinci Museum, and a Jinci Park entrance cannot substitute for the Tianlongshan entrance.

Scenic Sightseeing Shuttle Route 1
Take “Jinci–Tianlongshan Sightseeing Shuttle Route 1”. Board at “Jinci New Town Station” and get off at “Longmen Station” for the mountaintop entrance. A one-way ticket is CNY 4. Departure times, frequency and rainy-day operation may change, so check the scenic area's arrangement before setting out. This service is different from the electric vehicle used inside the Jinci Museum area.
Driving and ride-hailing
Drivers can navigate to “Yaotou Village Visitor Centre” or “Jinci Tianlongshan Scenic Area”. Parking is about CNY 10 per visit; after reaching the visitor centre, you still need to take the scenic shuttle uphill. A ride-hailing car can take you to the “Tianlongshan Grottoes” entrance at the top, but getting a car from the lower section may be difficult. The deeper route especially requires an advance plan for public transport or a return option recognised by the scenic area.
Know before you go
The shuttle is essential to the route
The scenic shuttle may stop operating in rainy weather. Without it, adjusting a route from either the mountaintop or lower section becomes difficult. If prolonged rain is forecast, confirm that the area is open before leaving. Do not accept unsolicited cars outside the scenic area or unregulated high-priced charter rides; postponing the visit may be the better option.
Shoes, supplies and physical effort
Although the main route has little uphill walking and more downhill walking, it can still put pressure on the knees. Wear shoes with good grip and bring hiking poles if useful. Food choices inside the scenic area are limited, so prepare water and a small snack in advance. Jinweizhai (晋味斋) at Jinci Hotel is a possible full-meal stop on the same day; its price and opening hours follow the day's arrangement.
