The North Gate is best for reducing uphill walking
Taiyuan Zoo is at 2 Dongshan Road, Xinghualing District, Taiyuan. It is built on sloping ground. The North Gate is higher, so most of the route descends after entry. It also has an underground car park, making it the preferred choice for drivers and visitors who want to minimise uphill walking. The East Gate is close to the herbivore zone and suits an interaction-focused start. The South Gate is the traditional public-bus entrance.
An adult ticket costs CNY 10 per person. Children under 1.2 metres and visitors aged 60 or above enter free. No reservation is required; buy a ticket on site or enter by scanning a code. Summer hours are 8:00–17:30 and winter hours are 8:00–17:00. Seasonal hours and concession documents follow the day's notice or ticket-office information.
How much time to allow
Allow 2–3 hours for the predator zone, herbivore zone, Elephant House and Giraffe House. Add the amphibian and reptile house, Bird Garden and primate zone for 4–5 hours. The CNY 15 sightseeing-vehicle ticket typically includes three vehicle rides and two herbivore-zone mini-train rides; check the ticket description on the day. The predator free-range area requires a separate CNY 10 predator-zone bus. Ticket types and service frequency follow the day.

The amphibian and reptile house and the Komodo dragon
The amphibian and reptile house features a Komodo dragon called “Maniu” and her offspring, introduced by the zoo as an example of parthenogenesis. Whether an animal is on display, where it is located and its condition can change. It is a good priority stop after entry, but seeing a particular animal is not guaranteed.
The herbivore zone
The herbivore zone may be visited by mini train, and you may see fawns, alpacas and other animals. Interactive feeding takes place only in designated areas such as Happy Farm. The zone suits families, but the feed types, young animals and interaction activities follow the zoo's arrangements for the day. Do not feed animals in ordinary exhibit areas.
Predators, elephants and giraffes
The predator-zone bus enters the free-range area, where animals such as white tigers, black bears and African wild dogs may be displayed. The Elephant House and Giraffe House fit naturally into the latter half of a downhill route. There are no giant pandas in the zoo. Animal displays change with individual condition, weather and management arrangements; do not cross barriers or tap on glass when photographing.
Build your day
The 2–3-hour short route
Enter through the North Gate and buy a sightseeing-vehicle ticket. First ride to the predator zone and transfer to the predator-zone bus as required by the zoo. Then take the mini train through the herbivore zone, followed by the sightseeing vehicle or a walk to the Elephant House and Giraffe House. Public-transport visitors should continue downhill and leave through the South Gate. Visitors parked at the North Gate can take a sightseeing vehicle back to the North Gate near the Elephant House or Giraffe House, if the day's service permits, instead of walking uphill.
The 4–5-hour complete route
Enter through the North Gate and first walk through the amphibian and reptile house and Bird Garden, then take the sightseeing vehicle to the predator zone. After leaving the predator zone, continue downhill through the herbivore zone and primate zone, finishing at the Elephant House and Giraffe House. Public-transport visitors leave through the South Gate; North-Gate parking visitors take a sightseeing vehicle back to the North Gate from a nearby stop. If the vehicle serves only fixed stops, adjust the route to the day's stops and reduce uphill backtracking.
Choosing the exit
The complete route can finish at the South or North Gate. The South Gate is better for connecting to buses, while the North Gate leads back to the underground car park. Before leaving, check the final sightseeing-vehicle time and exit direction. If you walk downhill to the South Gate, include the distance from the gate to the bus stop; do not wait until after closing to look for a shuttle.
Get there
Bus
Take bus 864, 25 or 830 to “Zoo” or “Zoo North Gate”, then choose the South or North Gate according to the direction from which you arrive. Buses stop outside the zoo. The gate you choose changes the slope and route after entry, so decide before boarding whether you want the North-Gate easier route.
Driving
Drivers should navigate to “Taiyuan Zoo North Gate”. The North Gate has an underground car park, and parking is about CNY 10 per visit. Spaces are tight during holidays, so arrive early. After parking, enter through the North Gate; the East Gate's herbivore-zone entrance is separate from the North-Gate car park.
Know before you go
See the predators earlier
Animals are often more active in the morning, so the predator zone and feeding interaction can be planned early. After midday, some animals may become less active or return to shaded areas, and no exhibit can guarantee that a particular animal will be visible. The amphibian and reptile house, predator-zone bus and herbivore-zone mini train may also change operation with weather or management.
Feed only in designated areas
You may prepare food such as carrots, lettuce and Chinese lettuce (youmaicai / 油麦菜) for herbivores if the zoo permits it, but feed only in designated areas such as Happy Farm. Do not feed other animals, use flash to disturb them, climb barriers or put your hands into an enclosure. Disposable raincoats are listed as prohibited inside the zoo; prepare rainy-day equipment according to the on-site rules.
Slopes, water and meals
The grounds have many slopes and long paths, so a complete route requires stamina. Comfortable shoes and drinking water are important. Food options inside are limited, and a restaurant may not be open when you arrive, so bring food that meets the zoo's requirements. There is no clearly established fixed pairing nearby; treating the zoo as a standalone half-day or full-day family outing is more practical.
