Streets and entrances

Ancient Culture Street runs along the west bank of the Haihe in Nankai District. Its main entrances are the Jinmen Guli archway on the south side and the Gushang Yiyuan archway on the north. The public part of the street is free, while Tianhou Temple and other indoor sites have their own tickets and opening rules. Allow 1–2 hours for a first visit, or 3–4 hours if adding Tianhou Temple, a craft experience, and a meal.

Tianhou Temple and opening hours

Tianhou Temple costs about CNY10 and is generally open Tuesday to Sunday around 9:00–17:00, with Mondays closed; check the day’s notice for the current hours. Shop opening and evening lighting do not mean that the temple is open. Lighting after 18:30, festival displays, and shop hours change with the season and activities.

Choose your visit

Folk culture and crafts

Tianhou Temple is the historic centre of the street. It offers an introduction to Mazu belief, Tianjin’s urban development, and related folk spaces. Keep quiet and dress appropriately inside the halls; do not make noise or pose for photos during religious activity. Choose Clay Figure Zhang, Yangliuqing New Year pictures, and other craft shops according to your interests, and check the shop, maker, and price before buying.

Tongqingli and the river view

Tongqingli is a lane-style group of buildings beside the main street, useful for observing brick carving, alley proportions, and Chinese-Western architectural details. From the public riverside path, you can look across to the old street and city towers. Stay on the open riverside and do not enter closed waterside platforms; the street shops and riverside path have different opening arrangements.

Build your day

A 1–2 hour short route

From Dongnanjiao Station, walk to the Jinmen Guli archway and follow the main street to the outside of Tianhou Temple. Enter if it is open that day, then choose one craft stop, pass through Tongqingli, and leave from the Gushang Yiyuan archway. There is no need to chase several snacks and indoor venues on a short visit; leave room for ticket checks and crowds.

A 3–4 hour full route

Enter Tianhou Temple first and allow about an hour to understand the space and folk traditions. Return to the main street for a Clay Figure Zhang or New Year-painting experience, then walk through Tongqingli and leave by the north archway. Continue to Yan Chun Lou or another restaurant confirmed to be open. If you add a Haihe cruise or the Tianjin Eye, check the sailing and reservation first; do not infer that either must operate because the old street is lit.

Get there

Metro and public transport

Take Metro Line 2 or 4 to Dongnanjiao Station. From Exit D, walk about five minutes to the street. Buses can reach Dongma Road or Dongbeijiao Station. On holidays, road congestion makes public transport easier to time than driving.

Driving and walking area

Parking is limited on holidays and prices may change. Do not drive into the district looking for roadside parking; use a legitimate car park and walk. Walk between the south and north archways. Bridges, the riverbank, and piers are different public spaces or operating projects and do not share a ticket.

Know before you go

Shopping and spending

Confirm the goods, services, and prices of mobile stalls, non-official shops, and paid photo opportunities before paying. Do not judge authenticity from a vendor’s verbal “intangible cultural heritage” label alone. For New Year pictures, clay figures, or traditional-brand foods, prefer businesses with a clear shopfront and identification. Restaurants may have queues at peak times, so allow time for a meal.

Religious etiquette and night safety

Tianhou Temple remains a religious and folk-culture space. Do not touch offerings, make noise in ritual areas, or take photographs against the venue’s instructions. At night, stay away from the outside of railings and unprotected waterside edges. The lighting, cruise, and Tianjin Eye arrangements each change independently.

Before entering the temple

Check the day’s ticketing, ritual activities, and photography notices before entering. If a ceremony is taking place, wait where staff direct you rather than following companions into the hall.

Snacks and walking

Eat snacks only in areas where this is permitted and do not block shop entrances while walking. Use public roads when heading to a cruise pier or the Tianjin Eye, and confirm the cruise ticket or Ferris-wheel reservation in advance.
