Plan at a glance

Location and visit length

Porcelain House is at 72 Chifeng Road in Heping District. Its entrance is inside the building’s courtyard, approached from the courtyard entrance and the “Peace Wall.” The interior is compact and the stairs are narrow. A quick exterior and courtyard visit takes about 30 minutes; to see the indoor stairs, roof, and displays, allow 1–1.5 hours and expect people moving up and down.

Tickets and opening

An adult ticket is CNY50; students and visitors aged 60 or above pay about CNY30 with the required document. Tickets can be bought through the official account or by scanning on site, and advance booking is usually not required. Opening is generally around 9:00–19:00 from April to October and 9:00–18:30 from November to March of the following year. The actual last-entry time follows the day’s ticketing and on-site notice.

Choose your visit

Architectural and decorative details

From outside, look for the porcelain fragments, porcelain bottles, and decorative “China” lettering. Inside, focus on the courtyard Peace Wall, the spiral staircase covered in porcelain pieces, and the porcelain dragon decoration above. The stairs are narrow, so seeing the courtyard as a whole before entering makes it easier to understand how the decoration extends from the exterior into the floors. This stop suits visitors interested in architectural detail, decorative craft, and urban photography; if you only want the exterior, the opposite pavement provides a full view.

Limits of the indoor visit

The interior stairs are steep and narrow and may become crowded in busy periods. Keep the passage clear and secure your belongings while taking photos. Porcelain House is very close to Zhang Xueliang Former Residence, but the two attractions have separate tickets and ticket checks, different historical themes and displays, and independent opening arrangements.

Build your day

A 30-minute exterior route

View the building from the pavement opposite Chifeng Road, then use the permitted approach to photograph the Peace Wall and facade details from outside the courtyard. If you do not enter, continue on foot to Zhang Xueliang Former Residence. The road is an active city street, so do not stand in traffic lanes or block residential and shop entrances while taking photos.

A 1–1.5 hour indoor route

Buy a ticket at the courtyard entrance, see the Peace Wall and exterior decoration first, then follow the on-site one-way route through the building. Give priority to the spiral staircase and the high porcelain dragon before returning to the exit. Afterward, Zhang Xueliang Former Residence is about a five-minute walk away. If you also plan to visit the Five Great Avenues, recalculate walking time and the separate ticketing windows; the four residences must be planned independently.

Get there

Metro and walking

Take Metro Line 3 or 4 to Heping Road Station. From Exit D or E, walk about 5–8 minutes to 72 Chifeng Road. Use the street number and courtyard entrance as your navigation targets rather than searching only for “Republican-era style” or treating the neighbouring residence as Porcelain House’s entrance.

Driving limits

Chifeng Road is narrow and subject to one-way traffic management, so driving around looking for a space at the door is not recommended. Consider a legitimate car park at a nearby shopping centre, then walk to the attraction. Parking fees, entrances, and the walking route follow the day’s management.

Know before you go

Crowds and photography

Opening time or later afternoon may sometimes be quieter, but tour groups and holiday crowds can still change the experience. Mobile photographers and souvenir sellers are not part of the admission ticket; confirm prices, delivery, and refund conditions before paying.

How to combine nearby stops

Stairs should be given priority for safe passage. Older visitors, young children, and visitors with limited mobility can focus on the courtyard and exterior instead of forcing themselves into narrow areas. Zhang Xueliang Former Residence, the Five Great Avenues, and Mingliu Teahouse are possible next stops, but each has its own ticket, opening, and performance arrangements.

Ticket order

If visiting Porcelain House and Zhang Xueliang Former Residence on the same day, first check each place’s ticket desk, discount documents, and last-entry time, then choose the walking order. Nearby street numbers do not mean that one order can be used for both.

Time inside

When stairs and corridors are narrow, let descending visitors pass and view or photograph the displays only where stopping is permitted. Do not walk against the one-way flow or stop in a doorway to photograph the spiral staircase.
