Plan at a glance
Open historic district and walking area
The Five Great Avenues is an open historic district formed by Chengdu Road, Chongqing Road, Changde Road, Dali Road, Munan Road, Machang Road, and other streets. Entry on foot is free, with no single ticket gate or unified closing time. Minyuan Square works well as a central point, while streets, public-building exteriors, and commercial spaces that welcome visitors should be planned separately. First-time visitors should allow 2–4 hours.
Choosing a starting point
Starting at Xiaobailou is useful for public buildings and Minyuan Square. Entering from Yingkou Road or another street can shorten the visit to a particular section. Different starting points change the walking direction, so there is no need to double back repeatedly in order to “complete” the whole district.
Indoor reservations
If you plan to enter Beijiang Museum or Prince Qing Mansion (Qingwangfu, 庆王府), complete the relevant reservation or ticket purchase first, then fit the street walk around that time. Without a reservation, keep to the public-street route rather than treating an unconfirmed building as a fixed stop.
Paid stops and transport
The district itself is free, while indoor attractions such as Prince Qing Mansion charge separately. Beijiang Museum is a free-entry venue with reservations; its closed days and booking method should be checked separately. Xiaobailou Station, Yingkou Road Station, and Minyuan Square are common arrival points. Cycling covers more ground, but shared bicycles around Minyuan Square must be returned in designated areas.

Choose your visit
Choosing streets and buildings
Minyuan Square is a good place to establish your sense of direction. Munan Road and Dali Road offer continuous views of historic villas, while Chongqing Road and Chengdu Road are quieter walking sections. Xiannong Courtyard is suitable for a break and commercial spaces. The appeal comes from the different facades, street proportions, and modern urban history; not every villa should be treated as a place visitors can enter.
Exterior viewing versus indoor access
Most villas remain private homes, offices, or buildings in active use, so view and photograph them only from public roads and permitted areas. Prince Qing Mansion has its own tickets, displays, and one-way route. Beijiang Museum access depends on its reservation arrangements. Focus on public streets and venues that are open; do not knock on private doors, cross barriers, or use private buildings for elevated photography.
Build your day
A 1.5–2 hour quick route
Enter from Xiaobailou Station, walk to Minyuan Square, then choose the exterior of Geda Building or a short stop at Xiannong Courtyard before ending the walk or cycling at a designated return point. This route focuses on street views. Add Prince Qing Mansion or Beijiang Museum only if tickets or reservations are available; indoor access follows the day’s notice.
A 3–4 hour full route
Arrive at Xiaobailou or Yingkou Road and go to Minyuan Square to orient yourself. Continue along Chongqing Road, Munan Road, and Dali Road for exterior views. If you have a ticket, follow Prince Qing Mansion’s one-way route, then return to the public streets and rest at Xiannong Courtyard or another legitimate nearby business. If cycling, return the bike in sections at blue parking areas and leave time to walk back to the metro station.
Evening walking
At dusk, Minyuan Square and public streets can be used to observe illuminated buildings. Clock-tower chimes, outdoor projections, evening activities, carriage rides, and business hours follow the day’s arrangements. The evening visit is centred on public lighting and street views, not on a guaranteed show schedule.
Get there
Metro and cycling
Five Great Avenues can be entered from Xiaobailou Station on Metro Lines 1 or 3, or Yingkou Road Station on Line 3. From the stations, continue on foot or by bicycle to Minyuan Square and the individual streets. Shared-bike parking is managed by area; no-parking zones are common around Minyuan Square, so return the bike only at a location shown in the app.
Driving and carriage rides
There are many one-way roads and limited parking spaces, so driving around the district is not recommended. If you must drive, confirm a legitimate car park first and walk the core section. Choose sightseeing carriages only from an official station, and check the day’s published price, route, and commentary. Avoid opaque offers from people soliciting passengers on the roadside.
Know before you go
Weather and walking distance
Heat, rain, snow, and road works can affect both cycling and walking. Wear comfortable shoes and divide the route into sections that can be left at any time. Cafés, restaurants, and small museums have their own hours; an open public district does not mean every indoor space is open all day.
Nearby stops
Prince Qing Mansion (Qingwangfu, 庆王府), Porcelain House, Zhang Xueliang Former Residence, and St. Joseph Cathedral can be chosen as later stops, but each has separate ticketing, opening, and visiting requirements. If you add a crosstalk show, a river cruise, or Ancient Culture Street, check the performance and sailing arrangements separately rather than treating an evening walk through the district as a substitute for a reservation.
