Open district and historical context

The Italian Style Town is in Hebei District, with the main entrance around Marco Polo Square at the intersection of Jiefang Road and Shengli Road. Public roads can be walked throughout the day without a unified ticket. The surviving buildings of the former Italian Concession are also connected with the institutions and urban history of the modern concession period, so observe both current building use and historical context. The street walk takes about 1–2 hours; adding museums and a break takes about 3–4 hours.

Venues and business hours

Liang Qichao Memorial Hall, Cao Yu Former Residence, and the Zhongshuge bookstore have their own tickets, reservations, or business hours. Liang Qichao Memorial Hall generally opens Tuesday to Sunday around 9:00–16:30, with last entry at 16:00, and is closed on Mondays. A district that is open all day does not mean that memorial halls, former residences, commercial buildings, or the inside of the former barracks are accessible all day.

Choose your visit

Squares and buildings

Marco Polo Square, the Goddess of Peace statue, Dante Square, and the exterior of the former Italian Barracks are the main public-street choices. They are useful for observing red brick, arcades, the scale of the squares, and changing building uses. Access to the barracks’ second floor, balconies, or interior spaces depends on the day’s opening and staff instructions.

Modern figures and museums

Liang Qichao’s former residence and Yinbing Room help explain his ideas, family, and life in Tianjin. Cao Yu’s former residence offers a separate literary-history thread. Check both places’ opening and displays separately; evening views in the district do not mean the museums are open. Visitors interested mainly in architecture can stay in public spaces, while visitors interested in history can enter venues according to their reservations.

Build your day

A 1–2 hour short route

Enter near Exit B of Jianguo Road Station at Marco Polo Square. See the Goddess of Peace, Dante Square, and the exterior of the former Italian Barracks, then finish at Zhongshuge or in the public lanes. Whether a commercial space is open, whether photography is allowed, and whether a purchase is required follow the on-site rules; choose shops according to interest.

A 3–4 hour full route

Confirm and visit Liang Qichao Memorial Hall in the morning, then continue to Cao Yu’s former residence or another venue that is open. Take a break at a legitimately operating restaurant, then walk along Minzu Road and the smaller lanes to observe the buildings. In the evening, go to Marco Polo Square and the Haihe bank. If you add a cruise, lock in the pier and sailing first and go to the boat after the district walk rather than planning around a fixed lighting time.

Get there

Metro and bus

Take Metro Line 2 to Jianguo Road Station; Exit B brings you close to the core area. Buses such as 8, 634, and 638 stop near the Italian Style Area. Navigate to Marco Polo Square or the street number of a specific venue after leaving the station; the district name does not correspond to a single ticket gate.

Driving and parking

Parking is limited on holidays, so avoid circling inside the district. Consider the underground car park at Tianjin Station or a legitimate shopping-centre car park, then walk. Roads, pavements, and squares all carry pedestrian traffic; do not occupy a traffic lane or commercial entrance for photos.

Know before you go

Commercial spending and photography

Restaurants, bars, cafés, and bookstores can have very different prices and business hours. Read the menu and check seating and photography rules before spending. Confirm a tricycle route and price before boarding, and ask whether a street character photo costs money. Individual businesses do not represent the whole district.

Riverside and historical context

Use the public riverside path to reach the Haihe, staying away from the outside of railings and closed waterside platforms. The district can be understood through the history of the former concession, present building uses, and the boundaries between figure-related venues. Different periods, venues, and commercial streets should be read separately.

Venue reservations

If Liang Qichao Memorial Hall or Cao Yu’s former residence is your main purpose, check the reservation and last-entry time first, then fit Marco Polo Square, Dante Square, and the lane walk before or after it. A free district does not mean its venues can be entered without a reservation.

Leaving at night

After walking to the Haihe at dusk, return to the metro or taxi point along a public path that remains lit and open. Do not enter port areas, closed courtyards, or the back areas of commercial buildings for photography.
