Architecture and access
St. Joseph Cathedral (Xikai Church, 西开教堂), the cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Tianjin, is at 13 Xining Road in Heping District. The visitor entrance is usually at the square in front of the church. Admission is free and reservations are not usually required. It generally welcomes visitors Monday to Saturday around 10:00–12:00 and 14:00–16:00; on Sundays and religious holidays, Mass may mean that visitors cannot enter. Temporary services, maintenance, and management arrangements follow the on-site notice.
Visit length
The exterior and square take about 30 minutes. If the interior is open outside service times, allow 1–2 hours to quietly observe the stained glass and the space. This is an active religious site, so visitor hours do not mean that every area is open for unrestricted movement or photography.

Exterior architecture
The red-and-yellow brick walls, green domes, round arches, and Latin-cross plan are the main exterior features. The front square, sides, and rear can be viewed from public roads at different angles. Leave space for worshippers and people entering the church; avoid exaggerated poses and do not block the main door.
Interior and stained glass
The high interior, square pillars, stained glass, and organ form the main visiting experience. The stained glass changes with the light and weather. The church is not an exhibition hall that stays open all day; outside visitor hours, view the exterior from public roads only. Mass, maintenance, or events may also affect interior access. Whether photography is allowed, which areas are open, and whether the organ is in use follow the day’s rules. Do not touch religious facilities.
Build your day
A 30-minute exterior route
From Exit B1 of Yingkou Road Station, walk to the front square. Photograph the facade first, then follow public roads around the sides and rear to view the domes and brick towers. If the doors are closed or a service or crowd is present, remain in the square and public streets rather than looking for another entrance.
A 1–2 hour quiet visit
After confirming that the church welcomes visitors and no service is taking place, enter through the designated entrance. Walk quietly along the nave and permitted areas to observe the stained glass, columns, and altar direction before returning to the exit. If Mass begins or staff give instructions, stop photography, sit in the designated area, or leave immediately. Religious services take priority.
Get there
Metro and bus
Take Metro Line 1 or 3 to Yingkou Road Station. From Exit B1, walk about five minutes to 13 Xining Road. Buses such as 3, 20, and 37 reach the Binjiang Road area. Navigate to the church number and front square rather than looking for an entrance through a Binjiang Road shopping centre or another church building.
Driving
Parking nearby is difficult and spaces are limited, so public transport is recommended. If driving, find a legitimate car park first and walk to the square. Do not stop in front of the church, in a service passage, or at a residential entrance.
Know before you go
Religious etiquette
Dress appropriately and avoid camisoles, tank tops, shorts, and slippers. Keep quiet inside and turn off flash. Do not walk around, talk, or pose during Mass. Religious practice takes priority over sightseeing; if entry is temporarily restricted, accept the change rather than seeking another way in.
Walking with nearby areas
St. Joseph Cathedral can be combined with Binjiang Road, the Five Great Avenues, and the Heping District residences, but each has its own entrance and opening rules. After the church, continue along public roads; check evening lighting, shop hours, and other venues separately.
Time your visit
If you plan to enter, avoid arriving just before the 12:00 or 16:00 closing periods and check the notice in the square. Sunday visitor access may differ from other religious holidays, so follow the day’s notice and service arrangements.
Waiting outside
Companions waiting outside should stay clear of the main door and service passages. When bells, service notices, or staff instructions are heard, remain quiet and follow the arrangement.
