West Liao River civilization and Hongshan culture
The West Liao River civilization and Hongshan culture galleries introduce the region’s ancient past. Hongshan jade pieces include representative objects such as the cloud-pattern pendant. Visitors interested in northern Chinese archaeology and early steppe cultures may want to start here.
The museum’s exterior draws on the ideas of “round heaven and square earth” and the curved bow used by Mongolian people. Before entering, look at the building’s outline from the plaza, then continue inside to the galleries.
Liao dynasty tomb artifacts and murals
The “Tomb of Princess Chen and Her Consort” gallery focuses on a Khitan aristocratic burial from the Liao dynasty. Look for the gold mask, silver-thread netting and tall-winged gilt silver crown among its notable objects.
The “Murals from Liao Tombs in Kulun” exhibition depicts daily life, travel and banquets among Liao-era nobles. Visitors interested in historical imagery and burial artifacts can visit it together with the Princess Chen gallery.
Horqin folk culture exhibits
The Horqin Mongolian folk culture gallery displays everyday objects such as saddles and silver ornaments, as well as aspects of life on the steppe. Take time to read about how the objects were used.
The museum focuses on historical artifacts and special exhibitions, making it a good fit for visitors interested in northern archaeology, Liao history or Horqin folk culture. Families can choose galleries that match children’s interests; the visit mainly involves viewing static displays.

For a separate lakeside and city-park walk, see Xilamulun Park.
Build your day
1.5–2-hour highlights route
Enter through the museum’s main entrance. Start with the West Liao River civilization and Hongshan culture galleries on the first floor, continue to the Liao dynasty objects and Princess Chen gallery on the second floor, then visit the Horqin Mongolian folk culture gallery on the third floor.
Allow about 1.5–2 hours. Check the floor guide for the galleries open that day. After the third-floor galleries, return to the first floor and leave through the main entrance. If time is short, prioritize Hongshan culture, the Princess Chen exhibition and one folk culture gallery.
3–4-hour room-by-room route
Enter through the main entrance and allow 3–4 hours to visit the galleries in this order: West Liao River and Hongshan culture, Liao dynasty tombs and murals, then Horqin folk culture. Take a closer look at the Hongshan jade, the Princess Chen exhibition, the Kulun Liao tomb murals, and Mongolian saddles and silver ornaments.
If galleries have been rearranged or temporarily closed, visit the themed areas that remain open. At the end, return to the first floor and leave through the main entrance.
