Entry, tickets and timing
The unified ferry entrance for Liugong Island is Liugong Island Passenger Center at No. 101-2 Binhai North Road, Huancui District, Weihai. The reference adult basic ticket price is CNY 122, including the round-trip ferry and the island's basic attractions; the reference prices are CNY 31 for older visitors and CNY 76 for students, while children under 1.2 metres are listed as free. Ticket categories follow the arrangements on the day.
Low-season ferry service is listed as 07:30–17:30. In summer and peak periods, the first sailing may move earlier, to around 07:00, while the last outbound sailing is around 17:30. Ferry times, fog cancellations and same-day crowd controls can change, so confirm the day's arrangements before travelling; you can buy a real-name ticket 1–3 days ahead through the Zizai Weihai smart tourism platform or the attraction's booking channels.
How much time to allow
Allow around 3–4 hours for a shorter route focused on the island's history and coastal defences. First-time visitors should plan 5–6 hours to include the museum, Dingyuan Warship, Donghong Fort and Submarine 279. The attractions are separated by long walking sections, and there is little shade in summer, so older visitors, young children and anyone with limited stamina should consider using the sightseeing bus.

The museum and Dingyuan Warship
The Museum of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95 suits visitors who want a structured introduction to the war. Key exhibits include the anchor from the Jiyuan, a large naval-battle relief, recovered warship wreckage, shells, Ding Ruchang's final letter and related historical materials; allow about two hours for a first visit.
Dingyuan Warship is a 1:1 reconstruction of an ironclad. Its twin 305 mm main guns, sailors' living quarters, officers' cabins and hospital scenes can all be included in the visit. The immersive film “Dingyuan Zhuangge” requires a separate ticket and is a good add-on for visitors interested in ships, military history or family learning trips.
Coastal defences and the boat experience
Donghong Fort is one of the island's more distant coastal-defence sites, with open sea views and a clear sense of its defensive position. You can enter the retired Submarine 279; the interior is narrow, so it suits visitors who are comfortable in confined spaces and interested in military equipment. Seabird watching from the ferry works well as a short part of the round trip; the privately offered small-boat trips near the pier are a separate experience from the official ferry.

A 3–4 hour shorter route
After arriving by ferry, buy a ticket for Sightseeing Bus Line 1 and follow this order: Donghong Fort → Submarine 279 → the Museum of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95 near the pier → Dingyuan Warship → ferry departure. Donghong Fort is far from the pier, so visiting the distant point first leaves the museum and warship for the return to the pier, which works better when your departure time is limited.
A 5–6 hour first-visit route
Take an early ferry if possible. Visit the Museum of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95 first and allow about two hours, then walk to the nearby Expo Park whale hall; continue to Dingyuan Warship, take Sightseeing Bus Line 1 to Donghong Fort, and visit Submarine 279 on the way back. Return to the pier for a rest or meal before taking the ferry off the island. Line 1 is listed at CNY 60 and is useful for long island transfers; Line 2 focuses more on sea views and deer viewing for families.
Moving around the island and returning
The museum and Dingyuan Warship are close to the pier, while Donghong Fort is much farther away. Walking between all of them adds a significant amount of effort. During peak periods, sightseeing buses may stop temporarily because of crowd levels; keep time before the return ferry for the ride back to the pier and the boarding queue, rather than leaving the distant site until just before the last sailing.

Reaching the passenger center
From Weihai Railway Station or Weihai North Railway Station, take bus K2 or K5 to Liugong Island Passenger Center; a taxi from central Weihai takes about 15–20 minutes. Set the navigation destination to “Liugong Island Passenger Center.” The museum and Dingyuan Warship can only be reached on foot after taking the ferry to the island.
Parking and moving after arrival
Drivers can park at Liugong Island Passenger Center and walk to the ticket hall and ferry hall. On the island, the museum and Dingyuan Warship are walkable from the pier, while Donghong Fort and other distant points are better reached by Sightseeing Bus Line 1; Line 2 mainly serves sea-view and family deer-viewing routes.
Know before you go
Weather, crowds and temporarily closed facilities
Arrive early at the pier in summer and peak periods. The attraction may control visitor numbers, and sightseeing buses may temporarily stop operating. Fog can affect ferry service; Qiding Mountain Fort and its cableway are currently excluded from the itinerary, so adjust the route to the day's opening arrangements.
Costs, shade and safety
Food on the island is relatively expensive, so bringing a small amount of water and dry food is practical. Many areas have little shade in summer, so prepare for sun and heat. Sightseeing Bus Line 1 and the “Dingyuan Zhuangge” film are extra costs beyond the basic ticket; lighters, alcohol sprays and other flammable items are not allowed through the warship security check.
Seabirds from the ferry
You can watch seabirds during the round-trip ferry ride. This official large-boat experience is separate from the privately solicited small-boat trips near the pier, whose prices and quality are less predictable. On the official ferry, stand on a deck with a clear view to watch the birds; follow the day's ferry notice if strong wind affects service.
