Plan at a glance

An independent museum at the foot of the mountain

Wudang Museum is on the east side of the Cultural Plaza in the Wudangshan Tourism Economic Development Zone, at 12 Museum Road. It is an independent cultural stop at the foot of the mountain and is free to enter. It is not part of the mountain admission, scenic shuttle, or cableway routes, so it fits best before or after a mountain visit.

Opening and visiting time

The museum is closed on Mondays and open 09:00–17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, with entry stopping at 16:30. Admission is free; document-verification requirements may change, and overseas visitors should confirm in advance how passports and other documents can be used for entry. Allow about 1 hour for a quick visit or about 1.5–2 hours for a complete floor-by-floor visit.

The panoramic model

The panoramic model on the second floor gives an overall view of Wudang's mountain architecture. It is useful before going into the mountain, helping you understand the distribution of palaces and the direction of the mountain routes. Visitors planning Taizipo, Zixiao Palace, Nanyan, or the Golden Summit can use it as the starting point for their route.

Key objects

The Ming-dynasty bronze statue of Zhang Sanfeng on the third floor weighs about 3.5 tonnes and is one of the museum's important sculptures. Ming imperial ritual objects such as the Golden Dragon (金龙), Jade Bi (玉璧), and Shanjian (山简) are worth viewing for their craft and materials. The floor and open areas for each object follow the day's exhibition arrangement.

Architecture, martial arts, and music

The museum also presents Wudang architectural details, Daoist sculptures, martial arts and wellness, Daoist music, and notable people associated with the mountain. Visitors already interested in the mountain palaces can build a historical and architectural background here before seeing the buildings in person.

Read the exhibits by floor

Start with architectural details on the first floor, see the Daoist sculptures and panoramic model on the second floor, and finish with Daoist music and mountain figures on the third floor. Going upward from the first to the third floor makes the exhibition sequence easier to follow and reduces backtracking.

For a nearby historic palace to pair with the museum, see Yuxu Palace.

Build your day

The one-hour highlights route

After entering, go directly to the second floor. See the Wudang mountain model first, then the Daoist sculpture gallery, and leave by the indicated exit; allow about 1 hour. If time is limited, keep the model and the key sculptures, and calculate the museum visit separately from the shuttle time for the mountain.

The one-and-a-half- to two-hour deep route

Start with the architectural details on the first floor, continue to the divine figures and martial-arts and wellness exhibits on the second, then go to the third floor for Daoist music and notable mountain figures. Allow about 1.5–2 hours. After leaving the museum, you can walk to Yuxu Palace in about 15–20 minutes; visit Yuxu Palace according to its opening and activity arrangements on the day.

Fit it around a mountain day

The museum works well on a morning before climbing or an afternoon after descending. On its Monday closure day, use another destination at the foot of the mountain. If you also need to catch a mountain shuttle from the Wudangshan Visitor Center, count backward from the museum's closure and last-entry times when setting the length of the visit.

Get there

From the railway stations

From Wudangshan West Railway Station, take Route 301 to Wudangshan Town, then walk or transfer to a local bus to the museum. From Shiyan Railway Station, transfer to Route 202. After getting off, navigate to “Wudang Museum” or 12 Museum Road.

Driving and walking

Drivers can navigate directly to Wudang Museum and follow the local parking signs. From Wudangshan Town, the east side of the Cultural Plaza is walkable. The museum and the mountain visitor center are different arrival points; going into the mountain requires a separate trip to the visitor center.

Know before you go

Closure and documents

The museum is closed all day Monday, and entry stops at 16:30 from Tuesday to Sunday. If you arrive late, first confirm whether entry is still possible. Admission is free; document-verification requirements may change, and overseas visitors should confirm in advance how passports and other documents can be used for entry. The museum is not included in the main mountain admission.

Viewing behind display cases

Some display cases have glass reflections, so daylight makes details easier to see; change your position and angle when taking photos. Some timber pieces are displayed at an angle; follow the case notes and on-site route, and do not touch the exhibits.

Combining nearby stops

After leaving the museum, you can walk about 15–20 minutes to Yuxu Palace. Temporary exhibitions or activities at Yuxu Palace may have separate arrangements, so check the entrance notice on the day. If you plan to enter the mountain afterward, you still need to go to the Wudangshan Visitor Center for the main ticketing and scenic shuttle.
