Location and arrival
Nanyan Palace is in the Nanyan section of Wudang Mountains Scenic Area. The usual arrival points are the “Nanyan” scenic-shuttle stop and the parking area. First go to the Wudangshan Visitor Center, then take the mountain shuttle; vehicles generally transfer at Taizipo for the Nanyan direction according to the day's route.
Tickets and walking intensity
Adult entry is CNY126; the CNY164 pass includes the Golden Summit and Zixiao Palace, and the scenic shuttle is purchased separately at CNY76. Nanyan Palace does not have a separate mountain ticket. Allow about 1.5–2 hours for the palace out-and-back route and about 1–1.5 hours for the cliffside loop. The pure ancient-trail ascent from Nanyan or Wuyaling toward the Golden Summit takes about 2–4 hours, excluding the palace visit, queues, breaks, transfers, and return journey.

Cliffside palaces and the stone hall
Nanyan Palace's defining scene is a group of buildings set against the cliff. The Nanyan Stone Hall, also called Tianyi Zhenqing Palace, is built from stone components and is the architectural feature that deserves the most time. Xuandi Hall, Liangyi Hall, and the cliff inscriptions connect buildings, rock faces, and history along one walking route.
Dragon Head Incense and the valley view
Dragon Head Incense projects from the outer cliff, and current viewing is from the designated safe area. From the side, you can see both the stone incense burner and the valley below. Taomu Jian (桃木剑), a sword-shaped cliff feature, Feisheng Cliff, and mist after rain are worth looking for after the palace buildings.
Who it suits
The palace out-and-back route suits architecture and photography enthusiasts. Hikers can connect to the ancient trail toward the Golden Summit, while visitors interested in history can take the stone hall, inscriptions, and palace layout as one visit. The path from Nanyan station to the buildings includes continuous steps, and the cliffside loop is narrow; older visitors and children should stay on the open trail and walk slowly.
Build your day
The Nanyan Palace out-and-back route
Start from the Nanyan parking area or drop-off point. Visit the main Nanyan Palace buildings, Xuandi Hall, Liangyi Hall, and the safe viewing point for Dragon Head Incense, then return to Nanyan station by the same route; allow about 1.5–2 hours. If time is limited, prioritize the stone hall, Dragon Head Incense, and cliff inscriptions, then check the shuttle direction before returning.
The Nanyan cliffside loop
After entering Nanyan Palace, follow the open cliffside boardwalk around the area and look for Feisheng Cliff and other views before returning to the parking area. Allow about 1–1.5 hours. The loop is narrow and exposed; if rain or a barrier changes the route, follow on-site instructions and keep the main palace buildings as the visit.
The Nanyan–Golden Summit hiking route
After visiting Nanyan Palace, follow the ancient trail through Langmei Shrine and Chaotian Palace, then choose between the Ming Divine Way and the Qing Divine Way before continuing to the Golden Summit. The pure ancient-trail ascent from Nanyan or Wuyaling is about 2–4 hours, excluding the palace visit, queues, breaks, transfers, and return journey; the complete Nanyan–Golden Summit route takes about 6–8 hours. The Ming Divine Way has more scenery but is steeper, while the Qing Divine Way is relatively gentler. From the summit, walk down or take the cableway to Qiongtai and transfer to the shuttle.
Get there
From outside to Nanyan
From Wudangshan West Railway Station, take Route 301 or a taxi to the Wudangshan Visitor Center. From Shiyan Wudangshan Airport, take the airport shuttle to the scenic area. When driving, navigate first to “Wudangshan Visitor Center,” park at the foot of the mountain, and transfer to the scenic shuttle; you cannot drive directly to the entrance of Nanyan Palace.
Taking the mountain shuttle
After leaving the visitor center, the vehicle generally reaches Taizipo first, then transfers to the Nanyan direction according to the day's dispatch. The ride from the visitor center toward Nanyan is about 50 minutes, but the actual time varies with the route, transfer, and dispatch. After getting off at Nanyan, expect continuous steps; the shuttle handles the mountain connection, not the walking inside the palace area or on the ancient trail.
Know before you go
Reservations and tickets
Nanyan Palace has no separate reservation entrance. Entry to the main scenic area follows Wudang's real-name ticketing and reservation rules. After buying the CNY164 pass, the Golden Summit and Zixiao Palace are included and do not need to be purchased again. On ordinary days, the scenic area typically operates around 07:30–17:30, with entry stopping at 17:30. Holiday schedules and temporary controls may differ.
Steps, motion sickness, and weather
The path from Nanyan station to the buildings includes continuous steps, and the cliffside loop is narrow and slippery after rain. Wear shoes with good grip and carry rain protection. The mountain road has many bends, so visitors prone to motion sickness may want to prepare in advance and confirm the return direction at the shuttle stop.
Dragon Head Incense and photography boundaries
View Dragon Head Incense, Taomu Jian (桃木剑), and the full stone-hall scene from open paths and behind barriers. Dragon Head Incense is for distant viewing; do not approach the stone beam or cross a barrier for a photo. Morning or post-rain mist can suit valley and stone-hall photography, but follow closure and evacuation instructions if the weather deteriorates.
Supplies and return
Nanyan is a practical rest, meal, or overnight stop before or after a hike. Food and supplies on the mountain are limited, so prepare water and simple food in advance. Before hiking to the summit, confirm the Golden Summit reservation, cableway operation, and shuttle last departure. The cableway number is 0719-5689877; the scenic transport/parking number is 0719-5669777.
