Gates and daily visitor policy
Wuhan University (武汉大学) is around Luojia Mountain beside East Lake. The main visitor entrances are currently Luojia Gate (Bayi Road, the main gate) and Hongyi Gate (Luoshi Road, the west gate); each connects to a different metro approach. Visitor access at other gates follows the university's same-day notice.
From May 13, 2026, Wuhan University cancelled the daily public-entry reservation system. Ordinary visitors may enter through the pedestrian channels at Luojia Gate and Hongyi Gate. Campus visits are free, and the campus normally admits visitors from 07:00–19:00, subject to the day's gate management.
Time and physical effort
For ordinary daily visits, the usual entry period is 07:00–19:00, subject to the day's gate management. Wanlin Art Museum normally opens 09:00–17:00, with entry ending at 16:30; it is closed on Mondays, and public holidays may follow special arrangements.
The campus is built on hilly ground, with many slopes and long walking distances. A full walk may exceed 20,000 steps. Allow about 1–1.5 hours for the short route or 2.5–3 hours for the highlights route, including the return to an open campus gate.

Buildings and campus history
The “National Wuhan University” archway at Luojia Gate is a natural first architectural stop. Lao Zhaishe (老斋舍) and Yingding require climbing 108 steps; from the higher ground, you can see the campus and East Lake. The Republican-era exterior of the Administration Building fits well in the same walking section as Lao Zhaishe.
Wanlin Art Museum adds contemporary architecture to the campus route, and its third-floor viewing platform looks over the grounds. Cherry Blossom Avenue draws attention during the March blossom season; outside that season, the rows of plane trees remain a feature. Lakeside views and photography
The arched doorway of Lao Zhaishe (老斋舍) works for architectural framing, the square in front of the Administration Building for a full facade, and the top floor of Wanlin for an elevated campus view. Near Lingbo Gate, the waterside boardwalk looks out over East Lake and the sky and can work well for sunset silhouettes.
The campus suits first-time visitors to Wuhan, families and school groups, architecture photographers, and people interested in university history. If your energy is limited, prioritize Luojia Gate, the archway, Lao Zhaishe, and Wanlin. Continue toward Lingbo Gate only if you want the lake view and have confirmed your return route.

Highlights route: Luojia Gate in, about 2.5–3 hours
Enter through Luojia Gate and follow National Wuhan University Archway → Wanlin Art Museum → Cherry Blossom Avenue → Lao Zhaishe (老斋舍; Yingding) → Administration Building → 912 Sports Field (九一二操场). Finish near Lingbo Gate for the lake and waterside boardwalk. This route moves from the higher campus buildings toward the lake; actual access follows the campus roads.
Lingbo Gate is a lakeside stop on this route, not a promised visitor exit. After the waterside boardwalk, follow on-site directions back to Luojia Gate, Hongyi Gate, or another gate open that day. The return distance changes with the areas open, so ask about the exit route when you enter.
Quick route: about 1–1.5 hours
Enter through Luojia Gate and follow National Wuhan University Archway → Wanlin Art Museum exterior/Cherry Blossom Avenue → Lao Zhaishe (老斋舍). Then return in the same direction or leave through Hongyi Gate. If Wanlin is open and you have enough time, replace the exterior stop with the indoor visit.
At the end of the short route, follow the signs back to an open gate. With limited time, skip the Administration Building and 912 Sports Field (九一二操场) deeper inside the campus. Lao Zhaishe's 108 steps and the slopes add effort, so walking shoes are useful.
Wanlin Art Museum as a separate stop
Hongyi Gate is near Wanlin Art Museum and the sports grounds. If entering from Xiaohongshan Station, first confirm that the museum is open, then continue toward the campus buildings along Cherry Blossom Avenue and Lao Zhaishe. The museum currently accepts entries until 16:30, so finish the indoor visit before the late afternoon.
If Wanlin is closed or campus routing changes, use the archway, Cherry Blossom Avenue, Lao Zhaishe, and Administration Building as an outdoor route. Teaching buildings, libraries, and student dormitories are not public visitor areas; stay on open roads and at designated sights.

Metro and the two visitor gates
For Hongyi Gate, take Line 8 to Xiaohongshan Station (小洪山站), Exit A, and walk about 5 minutes. For Luojia Gate, take Line 2 to Jiedaokou Station (街道口站), Exit C, and walk about 10–15 minutes. Choose the metro route according to the gate where you plan to enter.
Luojia Gate is near the archway and suits a route along the main campus axis. Hongyi Gate is near the sports grounds and Wanlin Art Museum and suits a Wanlin-first route toward Cherry Blossom Avenue. Ordinary daily visits do not require a reservation; gate management and identification checks follow the day's arrangement.
Driving, campus transport, and walking
Private cars, ride-hailing vehicles, taxis, shared bicycles, and electric bikes from outside cannot enter campus. If driving, check commercial parking around Jiedaokou or the university and plan the walk from the car park to the gate. Visitors do not use campus buses or shared bicycles inside; the route is mainly on foot.
Slopes, steps, and long campus distances add time. Near Lingbo Gate, follow on-site directions back to an open gate; plan the lakeside pier and the campus exit as separate parts of the route.
Know before you go
Daily entry and cherry-blossom season
Daily visits follow the ordinary-public entry rules, while cherry-blossom season uses a separate real-name, quota-based reservation system. For the date you choose, read the gate-management notice or the cherry-blossom reservation arrangement before leaving.
Mainland Chinese visitors generally need their physical second-generation Chinese ID card and enter by tapping it at the gate. An electronic ID or phone screenshot should not be treated as a reliable substitute. Private cars, ride-hailing vehicles, taxis, shared bicycles, and electric bikes from outside cannot enter campus.
For daily visits, a passport cannot currently pass directly through the ID-only fast gate for members of the public. Visitors with foreign passports can go to Hongyi Gate and ask campus security whether manual registration with the physical passport is possible. Entry depends on that day's management, so confirm with the university before setting out.
During cherry-blossom season, a separate real-name quota reservation system applies. Foreign visitors can select passport as the document type in the official cherry-blossom reservation system. After a successful reservation, bring the original physical passport and use the visitor channel during the booked time for entry checks.
If a channel claims it can bring visitors into campus for a fee, do not buy access or pay through unofficial channels. Public campus routes are separate from teaching buildings, libraries, and student dormitories; stay on open roads and in designated exhibition spaces.
Food, weather, and the return
Meiyuan, Guiyuan, and the lakeside canteens keep their own hours, which cannot be inferred from the campus opening period. Donghu New Village and Jiedaokou are better for eating off campus, and the Jiedaokou and Intime Creative City area has more choices.
The Luojia Mountain slopes, Lao Zhaishe steps, and East Lake paths call for comfortable shoes. Use sun protection in summer and watch for slippery ground in rain. After visiting the lake near Lingbo Gate, confirm which open gate you will use before continuing to East Lake, Hubei Provincial Museum, or Hubei Museum of Art.
