Plan at a glance
Street area and opening style
Nanchang Street is at the junction of Yongle Road and Nanchang Street in Liangxi District, along one of the central sections of Wuxi's historic Grand Canal water-town area. The main Nanchang Street and the quieter Nanxia Tang on the opposite bank make up the main walking area. The streets are free and open all day, with several entrances, and no single ticket is required for the whole district. From Exit 3 of Nanchan Temple Station on Metro Line 1, walk about 10–15 minutes to the Canal Ancient Town Archway.
How much time to allow
Walking only the main street, Qingming Bridge and Nanxia Tang takes about 1–1.5 hours. Adding side lanes, a boat ride and food makes it a 2–3-hour visit. Shops keep their own hours and many close around 21:30–22:00; boats usually run until about 21:00–21:30. The district stays open all day, but the shops and boats do not share one timetable.

Main street, Nanxia Tang and the bridges
The main Nanchang Street has more shops, snacks and riverside night views, while Nanxia Tang across the water has narrower lanes and more residential waterfront scenery. Qingming Bridge, Dagong Bridge and Jintang Bridge are good for canal views, bridge reflections and passing boats. Side lanes such as Shengtang Li are better for a quieter walk and documentary-style photography.
Who it suits
Visitors who enjoy Jiangnan water towns, city walks, night views and photography can spend an afternoon and evening here. Give Nanxia Tang time if you want to see more of the local residential character. Snacks are easiest to find on the main street, while Wuxi-style dishes are available at local restaurants around Nanxia Tang; the canal boat is a separate purchase, with the pier and departure time chosen on site.
Build your day
A 1–1.5-hour quick route
Enter from Kuatang Bridge, walk south along the main Nanchang Street, climb Qingming Bridge for a canal view, then cross to walk a short section of Nanxia Tang before leaving from that side. This covers the main street, the key historic bridge and the more residential lanes, and works well between other attractions.
A 2–3-hour full route
You can start at Nanchan Temple, pass through the Canal Ancient Town Archway into Nanchang Street, walk south along the main street to Dagong Bridge and Qingming Bridge, then cross to Nanxia Tang and slow down around Shengtang Li and Helong's side lanes. If you plan a boat ride or dinner, confirm the pier and restaurant hours first, then decide whether to leave from Qingming Bridge Station or continue south.
Get there
Metro and walking
Take Metro Line 1 to Nanchan Temple Station, leave through Exit 3 and walk about 10–15 minutes through the Nanchan Temple commercial area to the Canal Ancient Town Archway. Nanchan Temple, Qingming Bridge and Nanxia Tang connect naturally on foot, so walking keeps the route more continuous than changing vehicles repeatedly.
Driving and parking
Parking in the old city centre is tight and expensive on holidays, so driving is not the easiest option. If you must drive, navigate to Wuxi Qiaoyi Middle School parking lot, then cross the road and walk about 300 metres to the Qingming Bridge area. Roadside spaces on the main street and the Nanchan Temple parking lot are more likely to be congested.
Know before you go
Crowds, shops and boats
The area is busiest on holidays, especially from 19:00 to 21:00. Arrive earlier in the afternoon if you want photos or a quieter walk, or avoid the dinner peak. The conspicuous glass boat at the main-street pier offers a different experience from the open-sided boats near Dagong Bridge; choose the boat type, price and departure time on site.
Food and closing times
Many snacks on the main street are chain-shop offerings. For Wuxi-style food, consider a local restaurant around Nanxia Tang; Jiangnan plum cakes and similar snacks may involve a queue. Most main-street shops have closed after 22:00, so plan the evening visit within the shops' operating hours.
