Plan at a glance
Separate the highway gate from riverside stops
The main paid experience at Tumen National Gate Scenic Area is the viewing area around the highway border gate. Tumen River Square, Boundary Marker 87, the railway gate and Boundary Marker 86 are separate nearby stops; check ticket coverage for each one. From areas open to visitors, you can look across the river towards Namyang, North Korea, and must stay within the boundaries marked on site.
Check ticket prices and hours for your date
Ctrip lists a reference ticket price of CNY 25 for the highway-gate viewing area, open 08:30–16:30 with ticket sales and entry stopping at 16:00; listings do not all show the same hours. Before buying, call 13844720200 or 18843338871 to confirm the day’s price, last-entry time and which sites the ticket covers. Ask separately whether the square or boundary markers are free.

Choose your visit
Visit only the gate viewing area
If time is limited, allow about 30–45 minutes for the highway gate, viewing platform and return walk. This is an itinerary estimate; ticket checks, queues, walking and time at the viewpoint affect the actual visit. If the paid area is closed or your documents are not accepted, choose a riverside stop confirmed open that day.
Add boundary markers and riverside views
Nearby stops include Tumen River Square, Tumen River 87 Street and the railway-gate area. Boundary Marker 87 is near the highway gate; Boundary Marker 86 is near the railway gate, so they are in different places. Allow about 1.5–2 hours for a longer riverside walk, but follow signs for border-management areas, ticket boundaries and open paths. Namyang Pavilion on Sunlight Mountain is a separate stop that requires its own bus or vehicle transfer; it is not a walking extension included with the National Gate ticket.
Decide whether it suits your visit
This stop suits visitors interested in the gate architecture, the Tumen River border landscape and riverside city views. Use only visitor areas open under the on-site rules. If you are mainly looking for cafés or casual dining, first check whether the square and 87 Street are open and which businesses are operating before buying a paid viewing ticket.
Build your day
Highway-gate short route | about 30–45 minutes
When you reach the highway-gate area, first confirm that you meet the ticket and ID requirements for the paid section. Follow the open path to the viewpoint, stay where staff direct visitors, then return the same way to the entrance or bus stop. Freight and border-inspection facilities are not part of the visitor route. If a temporary barrier is in place, stay outside the restricted boundary and visit a square or street that is open instead.
Riverside walk | about 1.5–2 hours
First confirm which riverside sites are open that day, then plan a walk linking Tumen River Square, 87 Street, the highway-gate area and any boundary markers visitors are permitted to reach. Tumen River 87 Street has food and creative shops for a short break. The walking access between Boundary Marker 86 and the highway gate has not been confirmed; follow the marked route on site. If you also want to see the railway gate or Sunlight Mountain, check transport connections and allow separate transfer time.
Travel to Tumen from Yanji
Check trains from Yanji West (延吉西) to Tumen North (图们北), then connect by local bus or taxi. Check train times, waiting intervals and fares for your travel date. If you take bus 9 towards the port area, confirm the stop, return service and last bus first; an estimated journey of about 20 minutes is one leg, not a door-to-door travel time. Set your return train before adding a riverside walk.
Get there
Address and location
The scenic area is south of Tumen River Square in Tumen. Search for “Tumen National Gate Scenic Area” or “Tumen Port Highway National Gate.” Do not navigate only to “Boundary Marker 86,” which may direct you to the marker near the railway port.
High-speed rail and local connections
The high-speed train from Yanji West (延吉西) to Tumen North (图们北) takes about 15 minutes; check railway listings for the actual departure and fare. Near Tumen North Station, bus 9 can take you towards Sunlight Mountain (日光山) and the port area, but services are infrequent. Confirm the next departure when you leave the station, or take a taxi after checking its pickup point and fare.
Driving and parking
Before driving, check the map for parking near the highway gate. On arrival, follow signs and keep clear of port traffic routes. Parking fees and available spaces depend on the day.
Know before you go
Foreign passports and border access
Tumen National Gate Scenic Area is on the China–North Korea border. If you hold a foreign passport, contact the scenic area before buying a ticket or planning your Tumen visit to confirm whether the paid highway-gate viewing area accepts foreign visitors, which documents it accepts and whether additional access rules apply. Ctrip lists 13844720200 and 18843338871 as ticket enquiry numbers; confirm that they are active before calling. A travel permit for foreigners (外国人旅行证) may be required for areas that are not open to foreign nationals. This does not mean every public viewpoint in Tumen requires such a permit. Enter only areas confirmed open that day.
Viewing limits and photography
The viewing platform faces Namyang across the river; visibility depends on weather, haze and on-site controls. Follow signs and staff instructions around bridges, the port and border facilities; do not cross barriers or control gates. Ask site staff before using a drone, and keep cameras away from clearly marked duty areas. Ask whether binoculars incur a fee before using them.
Documents and temporary closures
Carry the valid documents required for ticketing and identity checks; checks may take place in the border area. The entrance, viewing bridge and outer square have different access boundaries. Bad weather or port management may affect which areas are open. Before setting out, confirm tickets, transport and open sites; if only the outer area is open, follow the on-site route.
