Several names, one museum

Signs at Yanbian Museum also use the names “Yanbian Korean Ethnic Folklore Museum” and “Yanbian Korean Ethnic Revolutionary Memorial Hall.” Its collections cover Yanbian history, Korean ethnic customs and modern and contemporary revolutionary history. The displays combine artefacts, photographs, text and reconstructed scenes, linking local history with food and clothing visitors may encounter on the trip.

Opening days and last admission

The museum’s National Day notice of September 30, 2026, set post-holiday hours at 09:00–16:00 Tuesday to Sunday, with last admission at 15:30; it is closed on Mondays, with separate notices for statutory holidays. The website still lists summer and winter schedules. Check the latest notice before travelling and plan your arrival around the last-admission time.

Choose your visit

Start with ancient history

On the west side of the first floor, the “Dawn of the Eastern Frontier: Chinese Civilisation” gallery traces ancient history in Yanbian. Look for the inscribed funerary stone of Princess Zhenxiao (贞孝公主, also known as Princess Jeonghyo) from the Bohai Kingdom, along with other artefacts from the period. The stone is a National Grade One cultural relic. Read it alongside the other Bohai objects on display; no single exhibit covers the whole history.

Korean ethnic life and customs

The “Folk Culture and Shared Traditions” gallery on the east side of the second floor focuses on clothing, homes and life-cycle ceremonies. Reconstructed traditional houses, ondol underfloor heating, a kimchi cellar, wedding scenes and 60th-birthday rites help explain everyday customs. These displays include reconstructions; follow gallery rules and do not touch cases or exhibits.

Revolutionary history in Yanbian

On the west side of the third floor, the “Fighting Together Against the Enemy” gallery uses artefacts and displays to tell the revolutionary history of Yanbian’s ethnic communities under the Communist Party’s leadership. If time is limited, combine this floor with the ancient-history gallery or the folklore exhibition according to your interests. A separate gallery covers solidarity and development among Yanbian’s ethnic groups; the full route is the only one that includes it.

How long to stay

Allow about 1.5–2 hours for a first visit to all five galleries, or 40–60 minutes for the ancient-history and folklore highlights. A guided tour or temporary exhibition can change the pace. Choose your focus and arrive before the last-admission cutoff rather than trying to cover every gallery.

Build your day

Five-gallery route | about 1.5–2 hours

Enter through the south entrance on the second floor, take the stairs down to the west side of the first floor, then visit the west side of the second floor, the west side of the third floor, the east side of the second floor and the east side of the first floor. Exit through the north entrance on the first floor. This one-way route covers ancient history, interaction among ethnic groups, revolutionary history, folk culture and shared development; follow the entrance map if galleries are temporarily rearranged.

Folklore highlights | about 40–60 minutes

If you mainly want to see everyday life and customs, ask at the entrance how to reach the folklore gallery on the east side of the second floor. Focus on traditional homes, clothing and life-cycle ceremonies, then follow the signs to exit through the north entrance. This shorter route skips the other history and revolutionary galleries; temporary exhibitions and group activities may affect the time available.

Join a tour or explore independently

Professional and volunteer tours are scheduled by date. Ask at the first-floor service desk for that day’s times, or use the museum’s self-guided tour. Choose the option that fits your visit rather than doubling back through the galleries to catch a talk.

Get there

Address and entrances

The address is 8627 Changbaishan West Road, Yanji, near Jindalai Square and the People’s Stadium. The current route enters through the south entrance on the second floor and exits through the north entrance on the first floor. The entrances are easy to confuse, so follow the “Entrance” and “Exit” signs instead of looking for entry through the north door.

Buses and parking

Take bus 28 to Yanbian Museum (延边博物馆). Buses 9, 12 and 39 serve the People’s Stadium (人民体育场) area; check a live map for the walk from the stop. For driving, navigate to the south entrance on Changbaishan West Road and follow the parking signs. Call the museum before your visit to ask about parking fees and available spaces.

Connecting with a train

The museum is on the west side of Yanji and works as a separate stop or on the day you arrive in or leave the city. Travel time from Yanji West Railway Station varies with traffic. If you have a train after your visit, allow time for the journey across the city and station entry, and check live traffic before choosing a bus or taxi.

Know before you go

Free admission, reservations and ID

Admission is free. Before travelling, use the official Yanbian Museum WeChat account to check the reservation link and real-name ID requirements, and save your reservation confirmation. If you hold a foreign passport, call 0433-4311030 in advance to confirm how to reserve and which entry documents are accepted.

Gallery etiquette and temporary exhibitions

The museum includes artefacts, reconstructed scenes and interactive displays. Do not touch exhibits; follow on-site signs for photography, flash use and temporary-gallery access. Temporary exhibitions and education activities may change their names, locations and dates, so do not build your visit around a specific event without checking its schedule.

Check before arrival

Confirm the day’s opening hours, the 15:30 last-admission time, your reservation and which galleries are open. If you need a wheelchair route, luggage storage or English-language service, call the museum at 0433-4311030 before travelling.
